Perched on the clifftops above the Atlantic, Amarilla Golf and Country Club is the sort of place where you catch yourself taking in the view before you hit. Mount Teide rises in the distance, framing a Donald Steel designed golf course that weaves through indigenous Canarian flora and volcanic rock formations. The layout takes full advantage of the coastal terrain, with several holes running close enough to the ocean that you'll hear the waves between shots.

The design of Amarilla is strategic rather than overpowering and it rewards a bit of thought from the tee. The clifftop holes are the obvious highlights, but the routing inland has its own character, with elevation changes and natural contours that keep you honest throughout the round. Being out on the coast, you'll often have a breeze coming in off the Atlantic, so you might find yourself taking an extra club one hole and throttling back the next.

The landscape is distinctly Tenerife, with native plants and wildlife adding texture to the experience. It feels more natural than some resort layouts, with volcanic stone and native planting giving it that distinctly Tenerife look. You're playing golf in a natural environment that happens to have fairways and greens rather than the other way around.

Amarilla Golf & Country Club

Steel has created a fantastic variety of holes between the cliff edge and the ravines that are formed by Tenerife's spectacular geological history. The most amazing holes are those around the higher points, particularly the 5th, where visiting golfers will have to pluck up some serious courage to drive the ball over the sea towards the fairway.

Amarilla is not the longest, but its spectacular location makes it a favourite of regular visitors to the Tenerife and is well worth a game during your next golfing holiday to the sun-kissed island.

Greens had recently had maintenance so not at their best. Course in generally good condition. Interesting and some scenic holes.

We always love playing Amarilla, the staff are always courteous and the course is always in great condition with the greens exceptional. Unfortunately this time the course was going through their maintenance programme so the greens were not the best, that said, for the price they offered during the maintenance, it was acceptable. I would always recommend this golf course to anyone looking for a playable course with excellent greens. The food is also good and reasonably priced.

Interesting layout with a few great holes but greens had a lot of sand on them, and there were a lot of blind shots with no bells so you have to pay attention to the group ahead to avoid inadvertently playing through. Will be much better when the surrounding area is fully developed. Was a little tricky finding our way around the course, which crosses a few roads on its route through the area. Felt like a bit of a building site when we played it with a couple of what felt like temporary tees where an event had been held and temporary facilities were being dismantled. Bit basic restaurant but good food and service.
