Set in the hills of Bois Cheri in the south of Mauritius, Avalon Golf Estate is an inland standout, framed by tea plantations, rivers, ravines and mountain ridges. Designed by South African architect Peter Matkovich, this 18-hole championship course is widely regarded as one of the best golf courses in Mauritius and it's the island's only inland layout of its kind, perfect if you fancy a change from the classic beachfront resort set-ups.

You'll feel the elevation straight away, with holes that climb and fall naturally through mature greenery rather than being forced into the landscape. Rivers and deep ravines come into play on several holes, so it's not just driver-and-wedge all day. The bunkering and firm, well-guarded greens put a premium on picking the right lines and hitting the right parts of the putting surfaces. If you enjoy plotting your way round and being rewarded for smart course management, Avalon will be right up your street.

A big plus for groups is how easy it is to reach. Avalon isn't tied to a particular hotel on the coast, so you can stay wherever suits your trip and still get a proper championship test in. Being inland also brings a slightly cooler feel than the beach courses, which can be a welcome change in the hotter months.

Who is this for?
Anyone building a Mauritius itinerary who wants one round away from the resort scene, especially groups split across different hotels.

Who is it best for?
Golfers who like a strategic test with elevation and natural hazards, particularly mid handicappers and better players who enjoy shaping shots and managing risk.

Avalon Golf Estate

Avalon Golf Estate was designed to bring out the indigenous flora and fauna of the South, whilst still featuring the distinctive and natural features. Guests will indulge into an exclusive golf experience, amongst a diverse and welcoming environment, balanced with a perfect climate ideal for a round of golf.

Course designer Peter Matkovich, has applied a unique touch throughout, with lush, green, all-season fairways combined with clever use of rivers and ravines. With the South-East trade wind kept in mind whilst designing the course, all the par 3’s and 5’s offer an individual test, playing in different directions.

The Country Club has a sweeping view of the Southern coastline, an overlooking view of the golf course, and a panoramic scene of the mountain range too. It is ideal for freshening up after a round of golf, with various food and beverage options at the unrivalled Magic Spoon restaurant, or simply for a relaxing drink at the bar.

After the 9th hole there is the option of the half-way house, whether it is hot or cold food that is needed, it offers the perfect break to enhance the golfing experience.

Worth a visit. Only disappointment was that cost of food and drinks was not included within the premium all inclusive package supplied at Heritage resort
