Balcomie Links Hotel

Perched in the fishing village of Crail in Fife's East Neuk, the Balcomie Links Hotel is a small, characterful base for golfers who want the St Andrews area without the big resort feel. Recently renovated after being acquired by Drygate Inns, it keeps the bones of a 120-year-old inn but with refreshed bedrooms, smarter public spaces and a warm, local welcome.

If you're building a St Andrews trip, you're well placed here. You can be up the coast and on the links quickly, with the Old Course, New Course, Castle Course and Eden Course all within easy driving distance for a multi-round itinerary. When you're not chasing tee times, Crail Harbour is an easy wander and the ruins of Crail Castle add a bit of history between rounds.

Back at the hotel, the vibe is relaxed and sociable, more village pub than corporate hotel. Expect a well-stocked bar, friendly service and a dining room that leans into Scottish produce. It's a good option for couples, small groups and societies who want comfort, conversation and straightforward logistics in a classic Fife setting.

Who is this for?
Golfers, couples and small groups who want a relaxed base near St Andrews with village character and good food.

Who is it best for?
Golf trips that prioritise links golf by day and a proper pub atmosphere by night, rather than resort facilities.

Accommodation at Balcomie Links Hotel

The Balcomie Links Hotel has 13 rooms in Twin, Double and King options. Rooms have been fully renovated with high-quality linens, ensuite shower rooms stocked with premium toiletries, hot drink facilities, hairdryers and Smart TVs. They're compact but well set up for a golf break, ideal if you're spending your days out on the links and your evenings in the bar or restaurant.

Because the hotel is small, service feels personal and the atmosphere stays informal. It's the sort of place where you can come in after a long walk, get cleaned up and be seated for dinner without any fuss. If you're travelling as a group, it also suits a sociable itinerary where everyone meets in the bar to compare scorecards and plan the next day.

Food is a strong part of the stay. The restaurant focuses on Scottish produce with locally sourced ingredients, including seafood, quality meats and seasonal vegetables. The menu changes with the seasons, showcasing what's available from Fife farms and nearby waters. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available, which makes group planning easier when you've got mixed dietary needs. The cooking is confident and generous, the kind of meal that pairs well with a long day on the course and a dram before bed.

The hotel's size works in its favour. With just over a dozen rooms, the bar and restaurant are open to locals as well as guests, which keeps the energy lively and the conversation flowing. If you're the sort of golfer who enjoys a pint and a chat about the day's round, you'll feel right at home.

For downtime, Crail Harbour is close by for a quick stroll, and the surrounding coastline is perfect if you want fresh air before or after a round. The village itself has a proper local feel, with a few pubs, cafés and a working harbour that's worth exploring if you've got time between tee times.

Had a fantastic stay at the Balcomie links. Room was well appointed and comfortable enough for our requirements. Scott was grand and Supremely helpful throughout the stay. Gabby was also wonderful and the food and drinks were fantastic. Couldn't recommend it enough.

Accomodation was fine with pleasant rooms with fine views and all basic facilities provided. Breakfast was adequate for a small hotel, although choices were slightly limited. Suspect it was decent value for money and the owner worked hard with few support staff. After first night we looked for other alternatives for dinner.
