Inspired by the natural landscape of the South Pacific islands, Bali Hai is very much golf ‘Vegas style'; designers Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley took a blank canvas and added some seven acres of water, 2,500 palm trees and more than 100,000 tropical plants to create a remarkable golfing experience.
The layout tips the scales just over the 7,000 yard mark and is serious test even for skilled players, challenging visitors with some remarkable holes. These are made all the more appealing aesthetically by the contrast created between the crisp white Augusta white sand and the black volcanic rock outcrops, not to mention the lush fairways and greens.
Highlights include short par-3 16th and its island green, which will often be accompanied by viewers from the adjacent Cili Restaurant patio and also the third, a daunting hole dubbed ‘ Shipwreck' thanks to the water hazard that runs all down the right side.
