Hawkstone Park Golf Club sits in the heart of Shropshire's mature countryside, offering 36 holes of championship golf that have drawn golfers from across the North West for decades. The Hawkstone Course, designed by five-time Open Champion James Braid, and the Championship Course both deliver a proper test across a range of handicaps, set within an English Heritage Grade I landscape that includes medieval castle ruins and the dramatic cliffs of the Follies.

Even before you tee it up, the setting is a big part of the appeal. Both championship layouts and the academy course are carved through ancient parkland, with the 18th century Follies providing a backdrop few golf venues in England can match. This combination of serious golf and stunning surroundings makes Hawkstone Park a popular pick for golf societies and smaller groups looking for a memorable break in the North West.

The estate's history adds another layer. You're playing golf on land that's been shaped by centuries of English heritage, with the Follies themselves Grade I listed and the whole landscape protected. It's rare to find a golf venue where the off-course attractions genuinely rival the golf itself, but Hawkstone Park manages it.

Who is this for?
Golfers or groups seeking a weekend or short break that pairs quality championship golf with heritage, natural beauty and comfortable resort facilities. Ideal for societies, friends' trips and couples who want variety in course style, a relaxed hotel base and the option to explore historic Shropshire countryside between rounds.

Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers who appreciate classic parkland design and strategic shot-making, plus mixed-ability groups who value having two contrasting championship courses and an academy layout on site. Also suits golfers who want a sociable, non-stuffy environment with good food, easy access to local towns like Shrewsbury, and the chance to explore the famous Follies during downtime. Walkers who don't mind undulation will get the most from the Hawkstone Course, while groups wanting 36-hole variety without travelling between venues will appreciate the convenience.

Golf Courses at Hawkstone Park Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Championship Golf Course

The Championship Course is Hawkstone Park’s youngest layout and has made this venue one of the few in the West Midlands to boast 36 holes of championship golf. Weighing in at 6,763 yards it is noticeably longer than the Hawkstone Course and features many Americanisms – including generous fairways and large water hazards – which create an interesting juxtaposition with the stunning, and very English surroundings

Hawkstone Golf Course

The golf complex at Hawkstone Park extends to forty two holes, giving visiting golfers excellent variety. The 18-hole Hawkstone Course is where a young Sandy Lyle learnt his trade and it boasts some excellent holes. Particular highlights come around the turn and include holes such as the 12th, which has cleverly made use of the castle’s moat. Measuring 6,487 yards, this course is long enough to pose a question of even the best player’s golf game while not being overbearing for the lesser equipped player.

Signature hole: The 10th on the Hawkstone is the resort's signature; named ‘The Road Hole', the 518 yard par-5 hugs the dramatic cliff top.

Academy Golf Course

The six-hole Academy Course is especially useful for beginners but also offers a good opportunity for more experienced players to work on their short game or to simply enjoy some golf should they be pressed for time. Hawkstone Park also boasts good practice facilities including a 20-bay driving range an extensive short game area with both putting and chipping greens.

Accommodation at Hawkstone Park Hotel, Golf & Country Club

The on-site Hawkstone Park Hotel has 66 refurbished bedrooms, which makes life easy for a golf break. You're based on the estate, so there's no faff with taxis or driving between rounds, and you can finish up, grab a drink and be back in your room in minutes.

Rooms are modern, comfortable and geared towards short-stay weekends, with flat-screen satellite TVs and the sort of layout that works well for golf buddies sharing. If you're making a bit more of an occasion, there are superior rooms and suites that give you extra space to spread out, especially handy if you're travelling with a partner rather than a full-on society gang.

The hotel sits right on the estate, so you're never more than a few minutes from the first tee or the 19th hole. That proximity is a real bonus when you're juggling early tee times or want to nip back to your room between rounds. For groups, it also means you can keep everyone together rather than splitting the party across different hotels in nearby towns.

Standard rooms are well equipped for golfers. There's space to store clubs and kit without tripping over everything, and the bathrooms are modern and functional. The superior rooms and suites add a bit more floor space and, in some cases, better views over the estate, which is worth considering if you're celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary.

Food & Drink

Breakfast is served early enough to accommodate morning tee times, which is often overlooked at golf hotels but makes a big difference when you're trying to get 18 holes in before lunch. The hotel staff are used to dealing with golf groups, so check-in and luggage handling tend to be straightforward even when you've got a full society arriving at once.

For groups, the big advantage here is that everything is in one place. You can keep the trip relaxed, avoid splitting the party across different hotels and actually enjoy the evenings together, whether that's talking through the day's best and worst swings or planning which course you're taking on in the morning.

The 1792 Bar & Grill is the resort's main restaurant, known particularly for its extravagant Sunday lunches that draw locals and visitors alike. The menu focuses on quality ingredients and hearty portions, perfect after a long day walking the undulating fairways of the Hawkstone or Championship courses.

For something lighter, Lyles Bar offers a relaxed setting with views over the 18th green of the Hawkstone Course. After your round, it's the natural place to settle in with a pint and watch other groups finish their rounds. The bar serves a range of drinks and lighter fare, making it a popular gathering point for societies and groups throughout the day.

Leisure Facilities

Beyond the golf, Hawkstone Park offers one of England's most unique attractions. The 18th century Hawkstone Park Follies are a Grade I listed landscape of cliffs, crags, caves, woodland and ancient monuments that draw thousands of visitors each year. Highlights include the Swiss Bridge, a vintage wooden structure spanning a deep chasm, and the Monument, a 100-foot column offering views across 13 counties.

The Follies overlook both the Hawkstone and Championship courses, and exploring the 100 acres of dramatic Shropshire countryside is an experience in itself. Between tee times or on a rest day, it's worth setting aside a couple of hours to walk the trails and take in the views. You don't often get the chance to combine serious golf with genuine historical exploration, all within the same estate.

For those wanting to venture further afield, the historic town of Shrewsbury is just a 30-minute drive south. The town offers a castle, a cathedral and a wide variety of bars, restaurants and shops, making it a solid option for an evening out or a rest day between rounds.

Hawkstone Park is located in Weston-under-Redcastle, North Shropshire, half an hour's drive north of Shrewsbury and an hour south of Manchester. The resort is accessible from the M6 and M54, making it a straightforward destination for golfers travelling from across the North West, Midlands and beyond.

The hotel area, bar and restaurant were nice, good food and good selection of drinks etc. The basic rooms were just that ... a bit basic and tired, bathroom was a bit 'different' but ok !

Very welcoming and friendly staff, room had what you need and the bed was comfy enough. Shower was not the best as it was an electric retro fitted one by the looks of it so lacked power but was hot enough. Evening food was good, pricey drinks at the bar though! Breakfast was very good, tasty full english before we hit the course was perfect.

Staff were great, only issue we had was they had an old group list from when we first booked, it was a quiet time in the hotel as it was easter, hardly any one staying but nothing on the facilities, just the time of year.
