Hindhead Golf Club is a Surrey heathland test laid out in 1904 by J.H. Taylor, one third of the Great Triumvirate and a five-time Open Champion. Set on the dramatic ground around the Devil's Punchbowl, it's a course where placement matters more than power and where the best line is not always the most obvious one.
That pedigree is reflected in the events it has staged, including Open Championship Qualifying and The British Ladies Amateur Championship, alongside a long list of top-level amateur fixtures. For visiting golfers, the headline is variety and subtlety, with tee shots that demand commitment and approaches that need the right side of the fairway.
The par-70 starts asking questions straight away. On the 1st, the obvious line can leak into the right heather. A better play is to start it at the tree on the left edge of the fairway and let the natural slopes feed it back towards the centre. From there, it's a round of angles, thoughtful club selection and trusting the contours rather than forcing the issue.
The greens are quick by UK standards, so staying below the hole and giving yourself sensible uphill looks makes a real difference. Play it patiently and Hindhead will feel fair. Try to overpower it and the heather will take its share. If you like your golf traditional and your challenge honest, Hindhead delivers, and it's an easy win for a UK break when you want something with real character.

The Hindhead Golf Club is a course that many return to year-after-year, it's location within easy reach of Guildford and The A3 make it a popular spot as part of a golf break in Surrey and Hampshire. Be sure to check out other golf courses in the area such as Old Thorns, Liphook and Blackmoor, as a 2 or a 3-round golf trip, this is surely up there with the very best in Heathland golf you can imagine. With Hankley Common Golf Course just 10 minutes away, a golf tour to Hindhead can unlock many amazing Top 100 Golf Courses.
Hindhead has a rich history with many luminaries associated with the club. This dates back to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes diaries, who was one of the founding members of Hindhead, continues through to Prime Minister David Lloyd George, also includes Peter Alliss who was an honourary member of the club and is seen in the clubhouse with the Alliss Bar being home to countless pieces of golfing memorabilia from the Voice of Golf. In more recent times, Justin Rose won The Devil's Punchbowl at Hindhead, a famed amateur tournament played over 36 holes each summer. Not at all in the same league or breath but Oliver from YGT's Marketing department finished 3rd in The Devil's Punchbowl many years ago, so if you need to speak to someone about leading after the first round and not winning, give him a call.
The course features two very distinct 9 holes. The front 9 plays many holes through natural valleys that can help and hinder with some wayward shots finding their way back onto the fairway. Taking the correct line off the tee is key with testing drives on every hole, particuarly on the par-5 (off the white tees, 4 off the yellows) 2nd hole, 4th and 5th holes. The par-3 8th is a superb test with a wood or long iron needed off the back tee and one of the strongest sloping greens you'll see anywhere, a putt from above the hole is the quickest putt you'll face of the day.
The course has many stand out holes but perhaps the stand out is the shortest with the par-3 15th hole playing back into the corner of the course a little bit of serenity. Plus, who doesn't like a 124-yard par-3 to boost a bit of confidence.
The closing 18th hole is a stern par-4 with a large green just infront of clubhouse, walk off with a par and you'll leave with a sense of real achievement.
Be sure to spend some time after your round enjoying the Alliss Bar as well as the terrace with views over the course and stunning Surrey countryside beyond. Perhaps a pint of "tea" from the local Hogs Back Brewery as well.
