Holyhead Golf Club sits on the north-west tip of Anglesey, just a mile from the ferry port, with the Irish Sea stretching out in front and the peaks of Snowdonia rising to the south. The course is a genuine test of links golf, shaped by coastal winds and built across rolling, natural terrain that rewards accuracy and course management. It's one of the best courses in North Wales, offering a championship-calibre test and excellent value compared with some of the better-known stops in the region.
The layout runs close to the coast, with holes playing along the shoreline and others climbing inland to elevated tees and greens. The wind is a big part of the challenge here and it can switch on you, so club selection and a knock-down option are well worth having. Fairways are firm and fast-running, greens are well-protected by natural contours and bunkers, and the rough can be punishing if you stray too far offline. Pick your moments, keep it in play and you'll score. Get greedy into the wind and it'll bite back.
The views are outstanding. From several points on the course, you can see across to the mountains of Snowdonia, out over the water towards Ireland and along the rugged Anglesey coastline. It's a scenic round, but the golf itself demands full attention, particularly late in the round when the breeze often freshens up.

Holyhead’s golf course was designed by James Braid, the man responsible for a countless number of the most outstanding links and heathland courses in the United Kingdom. From the back tees, the course stretches to 6,090 yards, which is not long by modern standards, but there is no little challenge around Holyhead.
Narrow and undulating fairways are bordered by gorse, heather and bracken, which are extremely punishing for the wayward. This traditional club has changed little since its formative years and remains one of the very best to include in a golf tour of North West Wales.
The dormy house at Holyhead sleeps up to 14 guests across seven twin-bedded rooms, which makes it a smart base for societies, small groups of friends or anyone who wants to roll out of bed and be on the first tee in minutes. Each room has its own washbasin and tea and coffee facilities, handy for an early brew before breakfast or a quick warm-up on the range.
Facilities are simple and practical. Showers and toilets are shared, with plenty available throughout the building, and the whole setup is geared towards golfers who value convenience and comfort over hotel frills. Rooms are clean, comfortable and everything you need for a good night's sleep after a long day on the links. After a windswept round, you'll appreciate having everything on site and not needing to organise taxis, transfers or dinner reservations.
Evenings are easy. Guests can use the bar and snooker room for a post-round pint, a catch-up on the day's near-misses and a bit of friendly competition away from the course. Meals are served in the clubhouse, ideal if you want hearty, familiar food and a relaxed club atmosphere rather than a formal dining experience. The vibe is welcoming and unpretentious, with a genuine club feel that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy the company.
The dormy house works particularly well for groups who want to stay together, keep costs down and maximise time on the course. You're literally a few steps from the clubhouse and the first tee, so there's no faffing about with check-in times or coordinating arrivals. If you're the organiser, the big win is how straightforward it all is. One base, everyone together and more time spent playing and less time coordinating the logistics. It's straightforward, golfer-first accommodation, clean, comfortable and right where you need it.
