Le Domaine de la Bretesche is the sort of place you book when you want your golf to feel like a genuine escape. Set on a 200-acre estate in the Loire-Atlantique region of western France, the hotel sits in a beautifully restored 15th-century chateau on the edge of a lake, with mature woodland and manicured grounds all around you. It's peaceful, high-end and still feels relaxed, so it works brilliantly for couples, small groups and societies who want great golf without the big-resort bustle.
The headline act is the golf course, which threads through a century-old forest and is widely regarded as one of the prettiest layouts in France. You get that classic estate golf feeling, with trees framing holes, slick greens and enough variety to keep everyone interested over multiple rounds. Off the course, you've got a well-equipped spa, indoor and outdoor pools and plenty to do if someone in the group fancies a day off the fairways.
Food is a big part of the experience here too. Le Montaigu is Michelin-starred, there's a resident sommelier and in good weather the terrace is hard to beat for a long dinner and a glass of something local. If you want a premium French golf break where everything is on-site and the setting does half the talking, La Bretesche absolutely delivers.
Who is this for?
Golfers and couples after a premium golf break in France with a chateau setting, strong food and a spa you'll actually use. Great for smaller groups who want quality and calm, not nightlife.
Who is it best for?
Anyone who wants a complete on-site resort stay, forest golf, Michelin-starred dining and easy off-course options like pools, tennis and walking trails. Ideal if you're mixing golfers and non-golfers in the same booking.

Designed by Bill Baker in the mid 1960s, the championship course reaches 6,649 yards from the back tees, and is always maintained in immaculate condition. The course is laid out around the chateau and surrounding lake, and is a technical challenge that is the perfect holiday golf course.
The stunning surroundings will make up for any disappointments on the course, which is the perfect complement to La Bretesche's fairytale chateau hotel.
Accommodation at La Bretesche is split between the main chateau and a selection of larger options across the estate, so you can match the stay to your group. Inside the hotel, there are 36 rooms and junior suites, which keeps the atmosphere intimate and quietly luxurious rather than busy. Expect a classic chateau feel with modern comforts, so you get the character without sacrificing the basics that matter after 18 holes.
Rooms are tastefully appointed, with period details balanced by contemporary bathrooms and good bedding. You're not getting cookie-cutter chain-hotel interiors here, which is part of the appeal. Views vary, some overlook the lake and grounds, others face the woodland, but all are peaceful. If you're particular about room type or view, it's worth flagging that when you book.
If you're travelling as a group or you want more space and privacy, the estate also offers 5 villas and 17 cottages. They're a smart shout for societies and friends' trips because you get room to spread out, plus the flexibility of shared living space while still having the hotel facilities close by. The cottages work particularly well for longer stays or if you're mixing golf with family time, as they give you a base that feels more like a home than a hotel room.
The spa is a real selling point here, especially if you're building a long weekend around golf and downtime. Treatments include aromatherapy, reflexology and massage, with a leisure set-up that includes a jacuzzi plus indoor and outdoor pools. It's ideal for golfers who want to reset after a forest walk, and it makes the venue work brilliantly for couples where one person might want a spa afternoon while the other plays an extra round.
Away from the course, you've got plenty of estate activities to fill the gaps, including tennis, mountain biking, hiking, horse riding and hunting. In short, it's the sort of place where the non-golfers don't feel like they've been dragged along, and the golfers can play, eat well and switch off without ever needing to leave the grounds. The estate's size means you can genuinely explore on foot or bike, and the trails are well marked if you fancy a morning walk before your tee time.
Gastronomy is central to any stay at La Bretesche. Le Montaigu restaurant has been awarded a star by the Michelin Guide, delivering an exceptional à la carte experience from start to finish. The resident sommelier curates a wine list to match the exquisite menu, while the terrace offers a stunning setting for dining overlooking the estate. From the quality of ingredients to the presentation and service, it's the kind of meal you end up talking about on the flight home. If you're serious about food and wine, this is a venue that won't disappoint.
