North Foreland Golf Club offers 36 holes of cliff-top downland golf on the Kent coast, with firm fairways, quick greens and sea views that rarely leave you. Set above Broadstairs, it's an easy hop from Margate and Botany Bay and a smart pick for anyone planning a serious Kent golf break. The club has welcomed golfers since 1903 and it still feels like classic, no-nonsense seaside golf.

Expect the ball to run on tight chalk turf, especially in summer, and don't be surprised if the breeze turns club selection into the main event. The best holes reward a flighted approach and a confident short game, with greens that ask you to commit to your lines rather than just cosy it up. You'll get the scenery, of course, but it's the honest test and the variety across 36 holes that makes North Foreland so easy to recommend.

It's also got pedigree, having hosted Final Open Qualifying, which tells you plenty about the standard of the test. The location sits perfectly for a multi-course East Kent tour. With Royal St George's, Royal Cinque Ports and Prince's Golf Club all within 30 minutes' drive, you can build a three or four-round itinerary that mixes downland and links and tests every part of your game.

Who is this for?
Golfers looking for proper coastal golf with two contrasting loops and an easy base in Broadstairs.

Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy firm conditions and strategic golf, plus groups who want to pair it with East Kent's headline links courses.

Golf Courses at North Foreland Golf Club

Main Course

It's fair to say North Foreland Golf Course will test every department of your game - the sea breezes constantly challenge your shot-making and your distance control. This exposed course is always in great condition, though, with greens that provide testing putts over fast running surfaces with subtle slopes. The rough is tough but fair, and there are great coastal views to enjoy.

Situated on the Kent coast at the point where the English Channel becomes the North Sea - and is lucky enough to have a view of the sea from every tee and green. It is not a proper links even though it's very links-like in appearance and feel.  Unlike seaside courses that run through dunes, North Foreland is chalk-based and, as a result, it drains exceptionally well and is playable all year round.

The courses are the work of the renowned architect's Herbert Fowler and Tom Simpson, and was completed before World War 1 after they were asked to extend the original nine holes. Such is the quality of the layout, the R&A uses North Foreland as a qualifying course when the Open Championship is held just up the coast at Royal St George's Golf Club in Sandwich. Fowler's creations include Aberdovey, The Berkshire (Red and Blue Golf Courses), Walton Heath (New and Old Golf Courses) and even Los Angeles Country Club which is a regular amongst the World's Top 100 Golf Courses.

Renowned for its fast-running fairways and greens, along with coastal views that are amongst the best in England, the 6,412-yard, par-71 Main Course is a fantastic test for all golfers – with the open front nine holes being contrasted nicely with the tighter back nine and a mixture of strategically- placed bunkers and broad fairways.

Great spot on the coast. Costal holes really bring the wind into play. Good greens and pace of play. Great set up and team.

Welcoming and friendly first class club, we enjoyed all the facilities and even though the course was struggling under a lack of rain, it proved a great test, thanks all, Steve, Owen, Patrick and Taffy

Great views, with good greens and fairways. The rough was a little long and therefore tricky to play. The bunkers didn’t seem well kept which was a shame. Was a windy day which add some interesting complexity.

A great location but the greens had been spiked and sanded so were slow. It was impossible to get hold of the pro shop by email or by phone. We did let them know
