Willie Park and J.H. Taylor teamed up to create the superb layout at Notts Golf Club, better known as Hollinwell. The course threads across beautifully rolling ground and through mature woodland, with enough natural movement in the land to keep you thinking from the first tee to the last green.

This is a course where positioning matters. The elevation changes ask you to control your ball flight, the trees visually narrow a number of driving lines and the bunkering is placed to catch the obvious bailout. If you like plotting your way round and picking the right side of the fairway for your approach, you'll feel right at home here.

Hollinwell has hosted plenty of top-level amateur and professional golf, which tells you what you need to know about the standard of test. Miss the fairway and you'll often be playing from an awkward angle, while the greens are anything but straightforward, with plenty of slope and pace to keep you honest, especially when the wind gets up on the higher sections of the property.

The club's long-term ambition is to host the Walker Cup, and it's easy to see why this is on their radar. For visiting golfers, it's a proper, traditional challenge, rewarding tidy ball-striking and smart choices rather than sheer power.

Heather, ferns and gorse line the narrow fairways at Notts, giving the layout a distinct heathland feel. From the championship tees, the course can be extended to just over 7,200 yards, making it a formidable proposition. Hollinwell has a terrific flow and rhythm, progressing smoothly from hole to hole, and saving the most impressive challenges for last. The signature hole has got to be the downhill 13th, which measures 228 yards and is played to a green encircled by no less than six bunkers.

The course hosted the 2015 Brabazon Trophy supported by Your Golf Travel for a record fifth time. The title was won by Cormac Sharvin of Ardglass Golf Club with a four-round -7 total. Needing a par on the last hole to claim the trophy, Sharvin overshot the green, bouncing into the clubhouse before returning back in bounds where his delicate chip and putt was enough to win the coveted trophy.

Whilst the course is a very intimidating 7,250 yards off the back tees, the whites measure just over 6,900 yards while the yellows are a more manageable 6,619 yards to the par of 72. Tips for those playing the course for the first time are to place a focus on accuracy rather than simply distance due to the penal "pink" rough which lines the fairways during the summer months. Whilst it might not be difficult to find your ball in the pink anyone attempting to play an ambitious shot towards to the green might come unstuck as it is certainly thicker than it looks.

Notts is a little known commodity, but those in the know will testify that it is a superb golfing experience within the Nottinghamshire area. Golfers must supply handicap certificates before play.

A magnificent heathland with a couple of memorable albeit rather quirky holes. Unfortunately the fairways were in a very poor state…. Worth another trip

The drought has taken the colour away from all the courses we played, including this one, but the quality of the lay out and the speed of the greens made it a real test for our opening game. Good food in the clubhouse, reasonably priced, a range to warm up on, and one of the nicest settings you could wish for. Definitely want to go again.

Great course particularly the back 9. It was tough as expected but the greens at Coxmoor and Sherwood were better

Tough track for mid to high handicappers, but super challenging, 4 holes are particularly challenging, with plateaued greens ,spectacular scenery , and course in excellent condition.

Played on own for 10 holes.then played last 8 holes with friendly three ball that were in front.who played course before.would definately come back and play again

Great welcome fro pro shop and clubhpuse staff Ccourse is great but quite long greens a wee bit slow and lots of bunkers around them Weather went against us on the closing holes so we struggled with those Only real problems are the blind holes which are not marked
