Porto Santo Golfe sits on the Atlantic edge, just a 15-minute hop by plane from Madeira or a 90-minute flight from Lisbon. If you fancy genuine switch-off golf without going long-haul, this little island delivers.
Opened in 2004, the course was designed by Seve Ballesteros, and you can explore more of his work with the Severiano Ballesteros designed golf course page. True to his style, the routing works with the land, weaving around existing lakes and native plants rather than bulldozing through them. You'll get big Atlantic views across the more exposed stretches, and with the breeze in play it becomes a tactical test where shot shape and imagination count for as much as yardage. Expect to see Seve's fingerprints in the angles into the greens and the options around trouble.
Porto Santo, meaning "blessed port", is the smallest inhabited island in the Madeira Archipelago. Unlike its rockier neighbour, it has a 9km sweep of golden sand and a mild, temperate climate that keeps the fairways open all year. That makes it a cracking shout for winter sun when courses back home are playing soft and heavy. The beach is right there for a post-round stroll, and a few days here slot neatly into a wider Madeira trip.

The South course is American in style, dotted with lakes, requiring a long and precise game while the North course is played on top of the fantastic cliffs and has all the best ingredients of a British links. Among the most stunning holes are the 13, 14 and 15 set just by the cliff edge, offering dramatic sea views.
Porto Santo also has a Par 3 'pitch-and-putt' course, ideal for training precision shots.
The Clubhouse is in perfect harmony with its surrounding environment, due to the great care taken in the design and construction of the building. It includes a restaurant with panoramic views of the island and the sea. On the enormous veranda you can taste the local specialities and have a drink whilst enjoying the superb view.
