Opened in 2009 and just 2 km from the main Quinta do Lago resort, Laranjal sits out in the Ludo Valley and feels like its own little world. It picked up Best Golf Course at the 2011 Portuguese Travel Awards and the wider resort has the silverware too, including Europe's Best Golf Destination at the World Golf Awards in 2015 and 2016, plus Golf Digest's Best International Resort in 2016 and 2017.
What you'll remember most is the setting. Five lakes break up the routing, umbrella pines shape plenty of tee shots and the orange trees dotted around the course give Laranjal its name. It's a modern layout, but it doesn't feel forced. You get enough elevation and movement to keep it interesting, without that manufactured resort golf vibe.
This is a thinking golfer's course. Fairways can look generous until you're slightly out of position and blocked by trees, so smart club selection off the tee is a big part of scoring. The greens are well defended and approach play matters, but it's not unfair either. Keep the ball in play, pick your moments to be aggressive and you'll have plenty of chances. Conditioning is typically superb, which is exactly why so many golfers base themselves at Quinta do Lago for a long weekend or a full week in the sun.
Laranjal is one of the Algarve rounds you'll talk about on the flight home. It's got enough bite to test single-figure players but it won't punish mid-handicappers who play sensibly. The bunkering is strategic rather than penal, and if you take one more club on approach shots when the pin is tucked, you'll save yourself a few dropped shots around the greens.
Who is it for?
Golfers who want a high-quality Algarve round away from the main resort buzz, with great conditioning and proper variety across 18 holes.
Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers who enjoy plotting their way around and groups or couples combining Laranjal with the other Quinta do Lago courses and facilities.

The land that this course is built on used to be an orange grove and the transformation is nothing short of staggering. Sitting just 2km from the resort in the Ludo Valley, pine and orange trees play a role in the beauty of this course. Voted the best course in Portugal in 2011 this is a challenging track with well-defended greens.
The set-up of this course is unique with five par-5s, eight par-4s and five par-3s. Given that this is a standalone course away from the main resort, the Laranjal has its own clubhouse and practice facilities. These amenities are exactly what you would expect from Quinta do Lago and are of the highest quality. The 11th hole on the course is probably the signature hole, although choosing a highlight is difficult here. A 180 yard par-3 with water to the right of the hole as well as the famous ‘beach bunker’ making that tee shot a little tenser. The green is lightning fast and leaving the ball below the hole is a must to give yourself a chance at a single putt.
Signature Hole – No. 11: Par 3, 230 yards (Black Tees)
There are many stand-out holes at Laranjal but it’s hard to argue against the 11th being the Signature Hole. This stunning par 3 is played over a sizable lake towards a green that is guarded at the front by a remarkable bunker which has no boundary at the front, rather disappearing into the depths of the lake. A miniature beach of you will.
The green is framed at the back by tall umbrella pines and slopes severely from front to back, meaning that any approach shot above the pin when it’s in the back portion of the green will leave a lightning-fast putt down the hill.
Facilities
Only a short shuttle ride from the main resort, the Laranjal course has its own clubhouse and practice facilities where you can relax after a long round in the hot Portuguese sun. If you fancy grabbing a bite to eat, the Laranjal Clubhouse Kitchen has a menu for all tastes and is open from 7:00 to 17:30. Buggy bars also circulate the course.
A pro-shop is available at the Laranjal Clubhouse, where golf equipment and a variety of merchandise is also on offer.

The course and conditioning are superb. The greens are probably some of the best and fastest you can play in the algarve. Practice facilities are good. Only real improvements would be around the clubhouse and shop. They just don’t match the quality of the quality of the course
