Set in the North Wessex Downs, Sandford Springs Hotel & Golf Club is a cracking option if you want a proper golf escape in the South of England, without a long trek. You're roughly an hour from London but it feels a world away once you're out on the property.
It's a neat set-up for groups and weekenders, pairing 4-star accommodation with 27 holes on site, plus the sort of facilities that make the trip easy from the moment you arrive. The clubhouse looks out across the course, there's a driving range for loosening up and the restaurant and bar are ideal for the post-round recap.
Location-wise, you're right on the edge of Berkshire and Hampshire, so it works well for mixed groups coming from different directions. If you like variety across a couple of rounds, the three loops of nine mean you can mix and match without feeling like you're just repeating the same day twice.
The hotel picked up TripAdvisor's 2020 Travellers' Choice award thanks to a genuinely peaceful atmosphere and staff who know how to look after golfers. With 40 en-suite rooms presented to 4-star standard, the property combines quality accommodation with direct access to the golf, making it ideal for weekend breaks, society trips or longer stays exploring the best of southern England golf.

Sandford Springs Golf Club makes great use of its enviable location to offer a trio of superb 9-hole courses – The Park, The Wood and The Lakes – all are distinctly different and provide great enjoyment.
Located between Basingstoke and Newbury, the course was laid out by Hawtree & Son (founder members of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects). The original 18-hole were officially opened by Sir Nick Faldo and Bernard Gallagher OBE in 1989, the final 9-holes were finished in the summer of 1991.
The signature hole is the 9th hole on The Park Course – a short downhill par-4 which requires an accurate long iron from the tee followed by a good approach to a putting surface which is guarded by two lakes. However it is possible for the long hitters to carry the 270 yards over water!
With its mature trees creating a naturally scuplted challenge, accuracy is required to negotiate the avenues of The Woods, arguably the most difficult of Sandford Springs' three nines.
Strategy, placement and ball-striking are all examined fully on the Park, which, upon climbing to its highest levels, is commonly buffeted by strong prevailing winds that help make it more of a links test.
The water is everywhere at The Lakes! The opening four holes provide a tough start to any round - be it your initial induction or when commencing the back nine.
The accommodation at Sandford Springs Hotel delivers exactly what golfers need after a day on the course: spacious, well-appointed rooms with views over the fairways, modern amenities and a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. All 40 rooms are en suite and presented to 4-star standard, with a mix of twin and double configurations to suit different group makeups. For larger parties or families, interconnecting rooms are available, and there's a suite for those wanting a bit more space.
Every room comes with the modern essentials you'd expect, including TV, WiFi and aircon. The staff consistently earn praise for being helpful with the little things that make group trips run smoothly, whether that's arranging tee times, accommodating dietary requirements or just making sure everything's sorted so you can focus on your golf.
The hotel's position on the estate means you're never far from the action. Step out of your room and you're looking straight onto the golf course, with the clubhouse, driving range and first tees all within easy walking distance. It's this convenience that makes Sandford Springs particularly popular with societies and groups who want to maximise their time on the course without the hassle of transfers or lengthy walks between accommodation and golf.
Off the course, the hotel's restaurant and bar provide the same panoramic views across the fairways, making them ideal spots to relax with a drink and dissect the day's round. The restaurant serves a menu that works well for post-round meals, with a range that covers everything from hearty options to lighter choices. The bar is well stocked and offers a comfortable, sociable space where groups can gather without feeling cramped or rushed.
For golfers travelling as part of a larger group or society, the mix of room types and interconnecting options makes organising accommodation straightforward. Twin rooms are perfect for friends sharing, doubles suit couples and the interconnecting rooms work well for families or groups who want to stay close together. The suite offers a touch more luxury for captains, competition winners or anyone treating themselves to something special.

Course excellent in very good condition. Pro shop very helpful and friendly. The only down side was the cost of drinks at the bar, the one and only bar was very disappointing, manger at the bar was not that friendly, at times rude. Which is a shame as the overall experience was very good.

Hotels were nice, very clean and modern. Didn’t have any shower gel/body wash in the dispenser which was annoying. Fixed/set menu was annoying and limited choice. Beer selection not great either. Aside from that, decent place 👍

Rooms are separate from the bar and restaurant. It’s a very dark walk across the car park to get there. There is a restaurant in the hotel but any golfers have to eat in the large function room off the bar which totally lacks atmosphere. We were a group of 4 and put on a table too big so we couldn’t talk easily across the table. If we’d known we weren’t eating in a proper restaurant we would have stayed. We had to pick food on arrival (ridiculous when we were only 2 couples). Choice limited.

Overall confusing as 3 x 9 holes and if you aren’t used to it, it’s hard work. Signage not amazing and limited bins.. aside from that, greens superb condition, well kept and maintained course. Spacing between groups was excellent and flexible with moving t times around.

It was a very windy day for our first round so made the 9 holes difficult. The second day the sun came out and it was completely different. Course could do with some TLD.
