Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club

Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club sits high above the English Channel on the White Cliffs of Dover, and it's a cracking shout for anyone after classic Kent coastline golf. Panoramic views, a wonderful natural landscape of the Kent coast and ever-present sea breezes combine to give golfers of every ability a stern but fair test.

This James Braid designed gem has been testing players since 1909, when it was opened by Braid alongside Harry Vardon. From the white tees it stretches beyond 6,400 yards, but it doesn't bite through length alone. The interest lies in the movement of the land and the decisions you face from the tee, with five-time Open Champion Braid setting up each approach before you've even reached it. Pick the wrong line and you'll know about it straight away, leaving a tricky shot into a well-protected green.

Add the elevation changes and the wind off the Channel and you have a layout that rewards smart course management as much as ball-striking. On a clear day the views run along the Dover coastline, with Kent's countryside stretching away inland behind you. When the breeze freshens, every club choice needs a second look.

It slots in neatly as a round on a Kent coast break, with Deal and Dover both close by as handy bases.

Who is this for?
Golfers and groups who love traditional courses with history, views and a bit of bite, mixed-ability trips where the challenge comes from wind and terrain rather than length

Who is it best for?
Braid fans ticking off classic designs, couples, friends and societies planning a short break on the Kent coast. Anyone who enjoys thinking their way round when the wind gets up

Walmer & Kingsdown

Walmer & Kingsdown happens to be the closest course to Europe, with just a stretch of water separating it from the continent, it is also one of the few courses in the world where you can actually see another country while playing a round.

At 6,471 yards from the back tees it is no monster but the sloping landscape together with the wind will make you think about every shot. With a sharp ridge and steep valley leading into the adjoining countryside, every hole offers panoramic views that will leave you speechless.

But don't let the stunning scenery distract you from the game at hand. The course is a true test of skill, with challenges that will keep golfers of all abilities on their toes.

And when you're done with your round, the clubhouse facilities and catering will make sure you're well taken care of. From the superb condition of the course to the stunning location and views, every aspect of the Walmer & Kingsdown is designed to deliver a memorable experience that will have you coming back for more.

I love this course and for the money is the best value in Kent, just a shame the greens were hollow tyned, but will be back next year.

A really nice golf course to play with spectacular views on some of the holes. The wind made some of the holes really challenging to play.

Fab cliff-top course with lots of changes in elevation, lots of wind and a number of blind tee shots… a real challenge. Great experience and good value.

What a great club and course, you could say quirky and different especially the back nine, makes you really think about your game. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the views and nothing less than spectacular

Not a great course and the reception we received was off hand to say the least. I would not recommend

The greens had not long been hollow tinned, we should have been informed.

Always hard on a new course especially with many severely sloping fairways but enjoyable challenge and excellent views. When compared to the green fees of Princes Club, it represented good value.
