Campo Real is a proper resort golf break just 30 minutes north of Lisbon, ideal if you want a smart Donald Steel layout with the comfort of a 5-star base and plenty to do once the clubs are back in the locker. Set across rolling countryside near Torres Vedras, it's the sort of place that works for a quick long weekend, a society trip or a mixed group where not everyone wants 36 holes a day.
The headline act is Steel's championship course, routed across 150 hectares of naturally undulating ground with the brief to protect the estate's native habitat, including cork oak areas and wildlife corridors. The result is a layout that feels like it belongs here rather than being forced onto the land. You've got a full spa and wellness set-up, a solid choice of places to eat, plus apartment-style accommodation if you're travelling as a family or a bigger group and want extra space.
Lisbon is close enough for a day in the city, while the Atlantic coast and the Oeste wine region are handy if you fancy breaking up the golf with beaches, wineries or a bit of sightseeing around the historic towns of Torres Vedras and Óbidos. If you're the organiser, this is a straightforward win. Everything is on one site, it's an easy transfer from the airport and there's enough on offer to keep golfers and non-golfers happy.
Who is this for?
Golfers seeking a high-quality Donald Steel design within easy reach of Lisbon, combined with 5-star resort facilities, spa treatments and the option of apartment-style accommodation for families or larger groups.
Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy strategic, undulating layouts that reward accuracy and course management, plus groups and families wanting flexible accommodation options and a full resort experience beyond the golf.

Campo Real opens and closes with long par-5s, and wedged in between are stunning holes carved through and around the vast valleys that make the landscape so memorable.
Measuring 6,671 yards, the course is not the longest, but sound strategy and accurate placement are vital, while the severely sloping greens make putting tricky at the best of times. Steel's golfing portfolio is admirable; his past projects include golf courses at St Andrews, Vila Sol, and Turnberry's mighty Ailsa, and he is said to be extremely proud of his latest Portuguese creation.
The area North of Lisbon is becoming increasingly popular for golfers, thanks to resort like Campo Real, so why not include it in your next golf escape?
Campo Real has a dedicated golf academy, including a superb driving range and a comprehensive short game area, while the resident professionals use the latest technology to provide expert tuition.

On-site, you can stay in the 5-star hotel or choose the resort's apartments if you want more room and flexibility. In total there are 358 bedrooms, with 151 rooms in the hotel. Hotel rooms are spacious, modern and set up for switching off after your round, with the usual 5-star essentials such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi and in-room drinks facilities. Rooms are decorated in a contemporary style with all the expected touches, designed to maximise your comfort and convenience between rounds.
If you're travelling as a group, with family or you simply prefer having a living space to spread out, the apartments are the pick. You get self-catering convenience with fully equipped kitchens and separate living areas, plus the option to go semi all inclusive if you'd rather keep things simple. There's also an on-site supermarket, which is a small detail that makes a big difference for longer stays or if you want to stock up on basics without leaving the resort.
Off the course, the Spa at Campo Real is built around the '7 Pillars of Well-Being' philosophy and is ideal for a recovery session after a hilly round. Expect a comprehensive range of health and beauty treatments alongside a 20-metre indoor pool, fully equipped fitness centre, sauna, steam room and dedicated relaxation areas. It's a proper retreat for golfers looking to ease tired legs after tackling the course's elevation changes, or for non-golfing partners seeking a high-quality spa experience.
Dining centres on the resort's main restaurant, which specialises in local Portuguese cuisine with an emphasis on regional ingredients and traditional cooking methods. The restaurant also features a barbecue terrace for outdoor dining during warmer months, ideal for post-round meals when the weather plays ball. For those staying in the apartments, the on-site supermarket and in-room kitchens provide the flexibility to self-cater when preferred, giving you control over your own routine.
The resort's location makes it a strong base for combining golf with sightseeing, wine tasting in the nearby Oeste wine region or exploring Portugal's Atlantic coast. You're 30 minutes from Lisbon if you fancy a day in the city, and the historic towns of Torres Vedras and Óbidos are close enough for an easy afternoon trip between rounds.

Numerous issues which we dealt with locally. No wifi. Only 2 coat hangers. Cold tap in bathroom was a trickle. Pedal bin didn’t work properly. Room phone didn’t work. Staff did try their best and I suggested a free dinner as a goodwill gesture for all the issues which they did do. Middle of nowhere location.

Fun course in lovely countryside with loads of elevation changes. Lots of blind fairways and difficult to know what shot to play on your first round. Definitely would have enjoyed a second chance having learnt the course layout.

The HCP rating of this golf course could not be correct. I just played to my hcp one week before at home and this weekend I got so beaten..:) Super course but keep in mind you will have to show up with your A-game.

Very hot and humid day. A little up and down but able to walk without a problem.
