Clyne Golf Club sits at the gateway to the Gower Peninsula in West Glamorgan, just west of Swansea, and it's one of South Wales' most enjoyable tests if you like your golf strategic rather than simply long. Named Welsh Golf Club of the Year in 2019 and ranked in the top 30 courses in Wales by Top 100 Golf Courses, it's a strong shout for a short break or a multi-course tour based around Swansea and the Gower.
Designed by Harry Colt and opened in 1921, Clyne still shows off the hallmarks you'd expect from a Colt layout. You'll find natural hazards, subtle shaping and pot bunkers that can be hard to pick up from the tee, with gorse and bracken framing rolling fairways. Miss the wrong side and you'll quickly be scrambling, but plot your way round and it's hugely rewarding.
It's a fair challenge for mixed-ability groups too. There's enough room to enjoy the day, but you'll score best if you can keep it in play, choose the right angles and stay patient when the ground kicks your ball towards trouble. If you're organising a group, this is an easy one to slot into a Swansea-based itinerary with short transfers and plenty of post-round options nearby.

Clyne Golf Club opened in 1921 and was created by Harry Colt, the architect of some of England’s most prestigious golfing venues. The outstanding location ensures that golfers enjoy stunning views in all directions of Swansea Bay, the Bristol Channel, the Brecon Beacons and Gower’s towering Cefn Bryn to the North.
The figure of eight layout is perched on the high ground of Clyne Common about four hundred feet above sea level meaning the wind is always a factor. The course contains some very long par 4's and tight short holes while the greens are even paced and always receptive, meaning accurate approaches will yield good scoring but straying from the target by just a little can result in severe penalties.
Percy Alliss began his professional career at Royal Porthcawl and became Clyne's professional in 1920. His son, the famous golf commentator Peter Alliss, has included Clyne in his Best 200 Golf Courses in the British Isles, writing "If my father had not been a travelling man, I might well have been brought up here".
In the classical style that reflects Clyne’s historical roots, the course loops out and back, and is a hugely enjoyable par-72 layout that often holds County events and is an essential addition to a good Swansea golf tour.

Great course that does not look so from the start, but opens up with some brilliant holes, all different, varied and views to die for.

The last course on our three day trip and provided some welcome respite for a group of tired golfers. Wide fairways and not too many bunkers. Greens were in good condition but fairways need a bit more attention. We still enjoyed it and it was a fitting climax to an otherwise enjoyable few days in Wales.

Unfortunately we teed off just after the start of a county boys competition. Most of the lads were from other courses and this made for very, very slow play.We only completed 9 holes as that took 2 hours and 40 minutes.It was unfortunate but nobody's fault.

Golf as nature intended- no fairway borders another so you’re either ok or in the gorse and heather- lovely clubhouse with great views

Enjoyable round despite the weather. Greens average. Fairways quite scruffy. Disappointed to find bar was shut after we finished our round. It was 5.30pm on a Saturday. Very strange.
