Southerndown sits high above the Ogmore River Valley with cracking views across the Bristol Channel and, on a clear day, you can even pick out the famous links at Porthcawl in the distance. It's a striking spot, but the real pull is a course that asks proper questions from the first tee.

What makes Southerndown stand out is how clean and uncompromising it feels. There are no trees and no water hazards, just firm turf, rolling ground and plenty of bracken and gorse waiting for anything that drifts offline. Add a near-constant breeze and you've got a layout where trajectory, club choice and commitment matter as much as distance.

The bunkering is a big part of the challenge. Many traps are set into the natural folds of the land, so you need to pick sensible targets and stay disciplined, especially when the wind turns. Get it in play and you can use the ground to chase the ball on, but miss your spot and you'll quickly find yourself scrambling.

If you enjoy thinking your way round a course, Southerndown is a brilliant change of pace from tree-lined parkland and a great option for a South Wales golf break when you want something authentic, scenic and quietly testing. It's a smart shout for a weekend based around Porthcawl or Bridgend, especially if your group likes a course with real character.

Who is this for?
Golfers after a links-like, back-to-basics test in South Wales with big views and plenty of character.

Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy firm conditions and strategic golf. Mixed-ability groups will love the scenery, but it's at its best when you keep it straight and stay out of the gorse.

Southerndown Golf Club

Originally laid out by Willie Fernie in 1883, Southerndown has been revisited by some of the game's great architects, notable Herbert Fowler, Willie Park and most recently, Donald Steel.

The course is tough yet also extremely endearing and will be enjoyed especially by lovers of seaside golf. While not the longest, Southerndown boasts a set of short holes that are the envy of most, while the closing hole, with its dramatic split-level fairway, will live long in the memory.

The great views and superb golf course are the foundations of this coastal gem, so be sure to include Southerndown in your next golf tour of the South Wales coast.

Southerndown Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in Wales

We enjoyed a fabulous round on a windy but dry day. The course is on common land so there were sheep and lambs wandering around which is fun but be careful where you push your trolley !!! Great staff in the Pro Shop and Clubhouse and we will definitely go back.

The group played from white tees which in the windy conditions made for a really difficult course but no less enjoyable. A real challenge and test of shot making. The pro, bar staff and members were very welcoming and friendly.

This is a moorland/heathland course with lots of sheep grazing everywhere which is interesting! There are probably nice views but it was misty & raining when we played it so we couldn’t see anything unfortunately.

Our time on the course was excellent would highly recommend this to anyone, especially if you don't mind the sheep wandering and the greens are class

We had perfect weather the day we played but can imagine with a bit of breeze it would play a lot harder. Remove the sheep and it would be perfect.
