Hunstanton Golf Club

Good See all 1 review

Hunstanton Golf Club is a Top 100 regular in the UK & Ireland and it's easy to see why. Established in 1891, it's a classic old-school links where the ground game matters, the pot bunkers are deep enough to cost you a shot and the wind is rarely a silent partner.

At 6,763 yards (par 72) it won't overwhelm you on the card, but it can feel a very different course from hole to hole. The routing zig-zags across the dunes, so one minute you're chasing a tee shot downwind on firm, running fairways, the next you're standing over a long iron into a stiff breeze. Club selection becomes half the battle.

Expect classic links traits throughout: blind or semi-blind approaches that demand commitment, tight lies that reward crisp contact and bunkering that punishes anything even slightly offline. In summer the turf gets quick, so controlling bounce and run is as important as controlling flight.

Hunstanton has also staged major amateur championships including the English Amateur, British Boys and the Ladies' British Open Amateur, which tells you plenty about the calibre of the test.

If you're building a Norfolk links break, Hunstanton pairs brilliantly with Royal West Norfolk and Sheringham for a three-course tour that's right up there with the best links weekends in England, and still feels refreshingly understated.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want a traditional Norfolk links test with real character, ideal for a long weekend where the golf does the talking.

Who is it best for?
Confident ball-strikers and groups who enjoy strategy in the wind and don't mind the odd blind shot. Pack layers, expect firm turf and don't be surprised if you hit a very different club on the next tee.

Hunstanton Golf Course

Hunstanton is a course that rewards accuracy and course management. Taking time to assess the line off the tee and how the ball is going to react once it is on the ground is key to scoring well.

Memorable holes include the par-4 6th which is a great example of where length doesn't provide difficulty. With an elevated green that offers dramatic slopes for anyone left or right of the flag, this is of equal chance of a birdie or double-bogey.

The par-3 14th is a blind par-3 that plays shorter than it's 219 yards but has a high amount of drama with the hope that your shot is inline with the large marker post behind the green with the greenside bunker on the right a popular spot for anything slightly right of the flag.

Another hole of note is that par-3 16th which looks about as natural a golf hole as you'll find anywhere in the world. The 7 bunkers surrounding the green are matched with views towards the Wash. This was also the scene of a famous hole-in-one by Bob Taylor, not happy with this hole-in-one on the first day, he did it again on the second day and the third day! A feat that is likely to never be repeated in golf.

The closing 18th climbs back towards the clubhouse and a par here is a great way to finish your round at Hunstanton. With a rich history all around the clubhouse to enjoy, be sure to take some time before or after to take it all in along with some excellent local cuisine on offer on the menu.

There's a path that runs along the course taking you directly to one of the best beaches in the area to have a dip whether your round has gone well or not so well.

Ryder Cup winning Captain Bernard Gallacher went onto say about Hunstanton “It’s a classic links course. A true championship test of golf.” This accolade is just one of the many that has been bestowed upon Hunstanton which has been at the very forefront of UK golf for over a century.

VERY POOR - as explained to YGT although nobody has had the courtesy to get back to me. YGT had booked us 5 tee times for 4 balls. We started playing and the pro came out and told us we had to play 2 balls. Something went wrong with the YGT / HGC communication which is disappointing. I use YGT because of the relationship I assumed they had with the courses. This caused a problem for the group and our tour playing format. Iawait your response on this
