Sheringham Golf Club is a true links course located on the western outskirts of Sheringham, perched on a glorious Norfolk coast cliff-top, 25 miles north of Norwich. The original 9-hole layout was designed by Tom Dunn in 1891 and the course was extended to a full 18 holes in 1898.

When the revered Sir Henry Cotton once said, “Sheringham has a charm that belongs to itself ... and is one of the best kept secrets in golf… Sheringham’s golf course is special,” he was not the first to recognise the unique charm of the course. Regularly recognised among the Top 100 Courses in England, Sheringham boasts scenic views paired with enjoyment for visiting golfers both on the course and in the relaxed, spacious clubhouse.

With other esteemed courses like Royal Cromer, Royal Norwich, Hunstanton Golf Club and Royal West Norfolk easily accessible from a city centre base, Sheringham is a great addition to a golf tour in Norfolk.

Sheringham Golf Club

Sheringham Golf Club is wedged between the cliffs and the preserved North Norfolk Railway Line, and is a golfing institution where little has changed over the past century.

The 6,558 yard layout has a demanding par of 70 and is known particularly for the ferocity of its par 4s. These holes are the key to manufacturing a good score, but with the wind invariably blowing hard, that is easier said than done.

The holes that run adjacent to the cliff edge are the most scenic at Sheringham with the North Sea waiting to catch any wayward shot. The attractive 6th hole's elevated tee provides glorious views but the ever changing sea breezes can mean clubs ranging from a mid-iron to driver are required to find the putting surface.

As well as the tricky bunkering and abundant gorse you are confronted with yet another hazard on the closing stretch of holes, the "Poppy Line" steam railway. A puffing steam train could be a distraction when trying to tee off but they are also rather picturesque.

The clubhouse at Sheringham dates back to 1912, giving off a sense of historical charm with photographs and other historical artefacts lining the walls. The 19th Hole Lounge Bar and dining room serves a varied selection of local, regional and national beverages as well as a range of food to satisfy any hungry golfer. The menu ranges from bar snacks such as homemade sausage rolls, seasonal vegetables, locally reared meats and poultry to freshly caught dishes of crabs and lobster.

This welcoming club is arguably one of the most satisfying and endearing options that can be included in a golf tour along the rugged Norfolk coastline.
