The Machynys Peninsula is home to the first Jack Nicklaus signature design built in Wales, and it's earned a strong reputation in a relatively short time. Set on a reclaimed peninsula reaching into Carmarthen Bay on the South Coast, it's a striking location, with big skies, estuary views and the Gower in the distance.

Despite the coastal backdrop, this isn't a traditional links. Nicklaus has created a strategic, target-led test where positioning matters and the penalty for getting it wrong is often obvious. Water is a constant presence, especially around landing areas and greens, and the bunkering is deep enough to make you think twice about taking on the hero line. The fairways give you a fighting chance from the tee, but the course asks tougher questions as you get closer to the pin, with large, contoured greens that reward a well-planned approach.

From the back tees it plays a touch over 7,000 yards, with multiple tee options so it works well for mixed-ability groups. When the wind gets up off the bay the course shows its teeth, particularly late in the round, and it's the sort of place that gets more interesting the more you learn where to miss.

Golfers can also unwind at Monks Premier Spa, whose spa pool, sauna, steam room and heated stone chairs make for a relaxing way to recover after a round.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want a modern, well-conditioned test on the Welsh coast, with proper strategic interest rather than pure brawn.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers and confident ball-strikers who enjoy target golf and are happy to see water in play.

Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club

The 25 acres of new land has been sculpted into an incredible resort style course that would be more at home in America, but still draws influence from classic seaside golf. Great swathes of rough are complemented by enormous water hazards to present visiting golfers with more than a little to think about, not to mention the championship yardage that tops 7,100 yards.

Very much in the style of a stadium course, Machynys has already hosted prestigious events including a Ladies European Tour stop, so follow in the footsteps of the professionals at Wales' newest star attraction.

Off the course, Machynys is also home to a dedicated TrackMan Golf Centre, with the technology now installed across 20 driving range bays. Every bay gives golfers real-time data feedback on their shots, so practice sessions come with genuine purpose rather than just hitting balls at random. There's also a ball-conversion feature that translates range-ball strikes into tour-accurate numbers, useful for anyone serious about dialling in their game before (or after) their round.

An interesting contrast to the traditional links courses in the area. A typical Nicklaus design which is being well maintained. We enjoyed the back nine more than the front and would definitely recommend playing there.

Unfortunately we were only physically able to play 9 holes as the weather was so bad … rain and very high winds … only us and 2 others on the course that morning

A nice contrast to the mostly links style the group played during our week in south Wales, so a welcome change. Resort style coure in very good condition. The pro allowed us to tee off early to try to finish before the wet weather, the group were very grateful for. Lovely course.

Course and facilities look excellent prior to getting onto the course itself. Quite boggy in places on the fairways. No run on the fairways and needed to clean ball after every shot. Greens were in poor condition - had all undergone some treatment in the days prior to our round, bumpy striations all over the greens. Made it very difficult to put with any consistency - ball changing direction due to striations and bobbling around. This aspect very disappointing.
