Tucked between the Blorenge and Sugar Loaf mountains in the beautiful Usk Valley, Monmouthshire Golf Club delivers a classic James Braid test that's been challenging golfers since 1892.

Braid makes smart use of the natural hillside, mixing elevation changes with a routing that feels like it belongs there. You'll need to plot your way around rather than simply lash driver, with doglegs, raised greens and well-defended approaches putting a premium on placement. Get out of position and the course asks the question, miss on the right side and you'll give yourself plenty of chances. Expect a few lies on sloping ground and bring a club more for some of the climbs.

The big draw, though, is the setting. Fairways roll with the land and the views open out across the valley, with the surrounding peaks never far from sight. After your round, the clubhouse keeps things traditional and friendly, the sort of place where a quick drink turns into one more as you replay the best holes from the terrace.
