Pestana Viking

Pestana Viking Resort is a classic Algarve base if you want sunshine golf with the beach on your doorstep. Set between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra, it's the sort of place that works brilliantly for groups, couples and anyone travelling with non-golfers, since you can split the day between tee times, pool time and a walk down to the sand without overthinking logistics.

From a golfing point of view, you're well placed for the western Algarve's best rotation. Several of the Pestana courses, including Alto Golf, Vale da Pinta, Gramacho and Silves, are within easy driving distance, so it's straightforward to build a proper course-hopping itinerary across the week. Sister property Pestana Carvoeiro is a short drive away, and we can help you line up tee times locally as part of your package. If you've got mixed handicaps in the group, the nearby Pestana courses are a good blend of scoring chances and proper tests, so everyone comes off the 18th feeling they've had a day.

If you fancy a day off from the scorecard, you've got boat trips, dive centres, water parks and historic towns nearby, so the trip stays fun even when some of the group want a break from 18 holes. Back at the hotel, expect a relaxed, traditional resort feel with direct beach access, sea views and enough on-site facilities to keep things easy. It's not boutique, but it is comfortable, convenient and well geared towards a no-fuss golf holiday where everything you need is close at hand.

Who is this for?
Golfers seeking a well-located Algarve base with beach access, multiple dining options and a relaxed resort atmosphere. Ideal for groups, couples and those who value convenience and variety over boutique charm.

Who is it best for?
Mid-handicap golfers planning a course-hopping itinerary across the western Algarve, and groups who want a sociable resort with enough facilities to keep non-golfers entertained.

Golf Courses at Pestana Viking

Vale da Pinta Course

The Vale da Pinta is a fantastic parkland course, measuring 6,728 yards. Like the resort's further two courses, it was designed by Ron Fream, a highly regarded American golf architect, and features a number of lakes which are as testing as they are beautiful. Since opening in 1992, the course has established an excellent reputation, culminating with the award of a European Seniors Tour event in November 2007.

Gramacho Course

Designer Fream was aided by multiple major-winner Nick Price in creating the Gramacho Course, the second at Carvoeiro. The Gramacho is unique in that it has 18 sets of tees, but has 27 greens, making for welcome variety. The 6,679 yard layout features many obstacles, including lakes, rocks and walls, as well as the almond, fig and olive tress that help to make the course so beautiful. The Gramacho has been selected to host the Ladies European Tour's finest players, and is a fascinating challenge.

Silves Course

Just ten minutes away is the Silves Course, the third on offer for guests at the Carvoeiro resort. Silves is a typical resort course, with generous rolling fairways, and a number of large water hazards. Bordered by palm and olive trees, the course affords terrific views of the mountains and the valley. The main difficulty is the severity of the green-side bunkers, so accurate approach shots are crucial around this delightful Algarve track.

Alto Golf & Country Club

Situated in a stunning private community in the Western Algarve, Alto was the last course to be designed by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton. The winding fairways and elevated greens are typical of Cotton's architectural philosophy, and ensure that there is a stern challenge for the low handicap players, whilst remaining fair for the average golfer. Set across two rolling hills, visitors will enjoy beautiful views of the Lagos Bay.

Accommodation at Pestana Viking

Pestana Viking has 182 hotel rooms and 60 suites, so you can keep it simple with hotel-style comfort or go for extra space if you're staying longer or travelling as a family. Rooms are well equipped for a week of golf, with air conditioning, satellite TV, a minibar, in-room safe, hairdryer and a private balcony with sea or garden views. Marble bathrooms are a nice touch and daily housekeeping keeps things straightforward for groups on an early tee time schedule.

The suites are the best pick if you like a bit more independence. You get a full kitchen, a separate living area with fireplace and a private balcony, which makes it easier to do your own breakfast, keep drinks and snacks in the fridge and head straight out to the course. Laundry service is available across both room types, which is handy if you're packing light and playing most days.

When it comes to food and drink, Valhalla is the main restaurant with buffet service and an à la carte option that brings in Iberian tapas and regional Portuguese dishes. The buffet covers breakfast and dinner with a broad selection that caters to different tastes, while the à la carte menu works well if you prefer something more focused. During summer, the Pool Bistro opens for lunch service, offering salads, grilled meat and fish, and lighter snacks by the pool. There's also an Italian restaurant on-site serving classic Italian fare, giving you three distinct dining environments without needing to leave the resort.

The Gallery Bar is your go-to for a post-round drink, with live music adding a bit of buzz on select nights. It's not a late-night party scene, but it gives the evenings enough atmosphere to keep the resort feeling sociable rather than sleepy. For quieter evenings, the beach is a short walk from the main building, and the spa offers treatments for those looking to ease any post-round stiffness. With two outdoor pools, direct beach access and a good spread of facilities, it's a reliable Algarve base for golfers who want convenience, variety and a relaxed resort set-up that doesn't require you to venture far for anything beyond golf.

Overall, a good hotel, however, we stayed in early March and the facilities were ok ( Gym,pool etc) but there was no evening entertainment (more to do with the season we travelled I think) Good comfortable room with bathroom. Breakfast food OK, a little limited in range.

Though the hotel was just about empty, they still stuck me in a single bed when it would have been no inconvenience or cost to give me a double! Poor effort on their behalf. Going to go air b&b next time.

The hotel is very good value for money. The breakfast room can get crowded at times but the staff are very attentive.

We were given an upgraded room which was a suite with plenty of room with kitchenette. Very clean and comfy. Staff very pleasant. Breakfast buffet very good with plenty of choice. Evening buffet very good on first night but slight problem on next eve where the food heaters had been accidentally turned off so all food had become cold! Staff very apologetic and gave us refund so no problem. In general though very good.
