Sutton Coldfield Course

Dr. MacKenzie himself described the land here as "almost the best heathland I know for golf" and his 1920s design philosophy shines through to this day. Measuring 6548 yards from the championship tees this par-72 layout is renowned for its all-year-round condition thanks to its free-draining sandy soil. The course is a fascinating journey that begins with two warm-up holes before presenting a unique sequence of three consecutive par-fives from the 5th to the 7th hole.

The challenge here lies not in fairway bunkering of which there is none but in finding the right angles to approach the subtle and speedy greens which are often protected by deep cavernous bunkers. The back nine is tighter and includes some of the best holes in the Midlands such as the brilliant par-4 12th with its blind tee shot over heather to a dipping fairway. The par-3 15th is another standout a stunning hole that would not be out of place on any of the world's top courses.

The historic 19th-century clubhouse sits just across the road from the first tee offering a warm and friendly welcome to all visitors. Before or after your round you can relax and enjoy some wholesome freshly prepared food while soaking in the atmosphere of a club steeped in golfing history. The old ladies' clubhouse now serves as the Professional Shop where you can stock up on essentials before tackling MacKenzie's heathland gem. For those looking to warm up the club provides excellent practice facilities to hone your game.
