Perched on the Murvagh peninsula and stretching out into Donegal Bay, Donegal Golf Club is a proper, old-school links that plays in two distinct loops of nine. It's an exposed, dune-backed layout where the Atlantic breeze is never far away, so you'll want to bring your thinking cap as well as your driver.
What I like about the routing is how naturally it sits on the land. You'll see the usual links quirks: rumpled fairways, firm turf that can run for miles and bunkers that are very much "take your medicine and move on". Pick the right line and you'll get rewarded, miss it by a few yards and you'll be scrambling. The peninsula setting means the wind direction changes the course completely from one day to the next, which keeps things interesting if you're playing multiple rounds.
There's also plenty of space to get loose before your tee time. The club has a 500-yard practice range with two covered bays, plus separate chipping and putting greens, handy if the wind is up and you want to get a feel for the speed on the day. On a clear day you get wide-open views across Donegal Bay, and when the wind gets up you'll see why locals rate it as a serious test.
If you're building a Donegal golf break around great scenery and a genuine links test, this is an easy one to include.
Who is this for?
Golfers seeking an authentic Irish links experience in a dramatic coastal setting, away from the crowds of more famous venues. Ideal for those who appreciate traditional links golf, natural terrain and the challenge of playing in Atlantic wind.
Who is it best for?
Best enjoyed by golfers who like strategic, wind-affected links golf. Confident ball-strikers will get the most from it, but higher handicaps will still love the setting and the proper "earned" feel of a good score. Also suits groups and societies looking for a genuine links test in a stunning location, with the practice facilities to prepare properly before heading out.

The course measures 7,400 yards from the back tees, but has several different options allowing all golfers to enjoy this fantastic Irish links test. Originally designed by Eddie Hackett, the course has been continually developed over the years by Pat Ruddy.
The quality of the course and it's location provide sensational panoramic views of the surrounding area, as well as a true test of Irish links golf.

Donegal Golf club (“Murvagh”) is a great course. It had been raining overnight so the rough was pretty difficult. The greens were very good. Clubhouse staff are all very friendly and welcoming and the clubhouse menu was good
