Located less than a 10-minute drive from Birmingham city centre, Edgbaston Golf Club offers 18 holes of classic parkland golf in a mature, tree-lined setting. It's ideal if you want quality golf without burning half the day on travel, and it's a cracking option for a quick-hit round or a short break in the West Midlands.
Designed by Harry S. Colt, the mind behind Royal Portrush, Le Touquet and Sunningdale, it's a strategic test that rewards accuracy and smart course management. Colt's routing makes intelligent use of mature woodland, strategic bunkering and subtle elevation shifts to create a layout that asks you to think your way around rather than simply hit it hard. Fairways are framed by established trees, greens are well protected and the design punishes sloppy misses.
If you're bringing a mixed-ability group, the challenge here isn't length, it's positioning. Keep it in play off the tee, respect the bunkering around the greens and you'll give yourself plenty of chances. It's the kind of course that feels fair but won't let you get away with lazy golf.
The club's proximity to Birmingham makes it ideal for short breaks that combine quality golf with easy access to the city's restaurants, nightlife and cultural attractions. It's equally suited to societies looking for a well-regarded course within striking distance of motorway links and central accommodation. Edgbaston is widely regarded as one of the standout layouts in Warwickshire and is usually presented in very good nick, especially through the main season.
Who is this for?
A Birmingham-based stay-and-play, a society day out with minimal travel, or a weekend that mixes a Colt-designed course with the city's bars and restaurants.
Who is it best for?
Golfers who enjoy strategic, tree-lined parkland and don't mind plotting their way round rather than blasting driver on every hole, particularly mid to low handicappers.

The course may only measure 6,128 yards from the back tees, but this par 69 with a slope rating of 132 will still pose some serious questions of even an elite golfer’s skillset.
Fairways are tight and greens are relatively small so accuracy is at a premium at Edgbastgon, but even on an off day, you’ll struggle not to enjoy the walk through the pristine parkland that surrounds the clubhouse, Edgbastgon Hall, a beautiful Georgian Grade II listed building. The sunny, south-facing terrace is the perfect place to unwind after a long day on the fairways.

Very enjoyable as a parkland course in the middle of a big city. It rained very heavily during the round and drainage work on fairways and greens spoilt it a little. On a summer day it would be extremely enjoyable. Good club facilities.
