If you're after a proper test of your game, the South Course at La Manga Club will give you exactly that. Originally laid out by Robert Putman and later reworked by Arnold Palmer, this layout was completely refurbished in 2004 with new water hazards, extra tree planting and rebuilt greens that sharpened the challenge across all 18 holes.
The course plays wide off the tee, but don't let that fool you, it's one of those courses where you can stand on a tee, see plenty of fairway and still feel slightly on edge. Bunkers are positioned to catch anything loose, and water comes into play more often than you'd expect, particularly on the front nine. That stretch includes some genuinely demanding par-3s and a handful of par-4s where you'll need to thread your drive between lakes and sand to leave yourself a look at the green. Get it wrong and you're pitching out or taking a drop before you've warmed up.
You can get round with sensible course management, but there's no hiding place if you chase flags. Play to the right side of the fairway, respect the water lines and you'll give yourself chances. Get greedy and the South will happily take a couple of balls off you. The greens tend to run lively, with enough slope to punish lazy putts, so leaving the ball under the hole is rarely a bad plan. The bunkering forces you to think your way around rather than simply grip it and rip it.
Who is this for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who want a strategic, well-conditioned test in the Murcia sunshine. Groups looking for variety will appreciate having the South Course alongside the North and West layouts, all within easy reach of quality resort accommodation.
Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy target golf and don't mind working for their pars. If you like courses that make you think, plot your way around hazards and reward smart play over brute force, the South Course will suit you perfectly.

The South Course is widely regarded as Real Golf La Manga Club's premier layout, and frequently hosts prestigious regional and national events, including the Spanish Open and European Tour Qualifying School. Originally designed by Robert Putman prior to opening in 1971, the South was reworked by the great Arnold Palmer in the early 1990s, and was sharpened up in 2004. As a result, this is now a fair but thoroughly exacting test of golf.
At just over 7100 yards, the course certainly provides the sternest test of golf from the three courses, and lives up to its championship status. Whilst requiring some solid hitting, golfers should beware of the countless water hazards and bunkering throughout the course. The front nine is the tougher, and contains two particularly challenging par 3s, both over 220 yards, as well as a 6th hole containing a blind tee shot onto a expansive and downhill fairway. However, there are still birdie chances on these long holes. The back nine, although less difficult, has many dog-legged holes and is home to one of the largest sand traps in Spain, running almost the whole length on the right hand side fairway on the par four 14th. Avoiding strategically positioned water hazards and bunkers is crucial around this par-73 cracker.
Signature Hole - No. 18: Par 5, 452 yards (White Tees)
The closing hole is unforgiving. Drives must be hit around a fairway bunker and two large bunkers which flank both sides of the fairway. The green, although large is very well protected and its multi-tiered nature requires a confident putt.

Super course. Everything we expected. Very slow round though and didn’t think marshalls did enough to speed up play. Two groups in front were practicing on the course.

Played with lots of wind, which made it more challenging than normal. Will be a challenge for shorter hitters if playing off white tees. Overall excellent value

Fantastic enjoyable layout. Difficult long par 3s and long par 5s if I remember rightly. Greens had just been aerated (or whatever its called) so were average. Most fun of the 3 courses. Again lack of toilets on the course (not even near 1st and 10th) and the one I did find, I wish I hadn’t. Same as the other courses, you need a course planner (if you dont have a gps, range finder etc).

Flatter than north but longer. Tricky is you struggle with length as there is water and well protected greens. Generally very good condition. Pace of play can be an issue at times.
