3 Nights, 2 Rounds
Alto Golf & Country Club sits in a smart private community in the Western Algarve and comes with serious pedigree. It was the last course designed by Sir Henry Cotton, the three-time Open champion whose name still carries weight with golfers who appreciate classic design.
On the course, you'll find a layout that rewards thinking your way round. Positioning off the tee and choosing the right angle into the greens tend to matter more than swinging harder, which makes Alto a great fit for mixed-ability groups. Good course management can save you a few shots and keep the round moving nicely.
Off the course, the setting is a big part of the draw. You get a calm, well-kept residential feel, while the Western Algarve delivers reliable golf weather for much of the year. That makes Alto a strong shout for shoulder-season and winter-sun breaks, when courses back home are soggy and a short flight gets you back on proper greens. It also slots neatly into a wider Algarve itinerary, with plenty of other quality rounds within easy reach.
Who is this for?
Golfers who want a relaxed Algarve round with a bit of history behind it. It's ideal for friends' trips, couples and societies who prefer a quieter base.
Who is it best for?
Groups who enjoy strategic golf and a calmer, residential feel, especially if you're building a Western Algarve itinerary and want something with heritage alongside the region's headline venues.

The winding fairways and elevated greens are typical of Cotton's architectural philosophy, and ensure that there is a stern challenge for the low handicap players, whilst remaining fair for the average golfer. Set across two rolling hills, visitors will enjoy beautiful views of the Lagos Bay.
The course is just shy of 7,000 yards, but that is mostly thanks to the monstrous 16th, which measures 661 yards and has appropriately been dubbed, ‘Gigante'.
Set amongst the pine, fig, almond and carob trees, and flanked by beautiful villas, Alto is a delightful place for a round of golf during your golf holiday in the Western Algarve.

Nice course, very long and slow going, but enjoyable. No buggies available which was very disappointing with a couple of older players tempted to not play. But the staff managed to free up 2 by tee off. No refreshment buggy or if there was it bypassed our 14 players. Half hour trek from our accommodation at Pestana by minibus. Overall a challenging course but more buggies required.

Narrow course and undulating but still loved it. Every tee shot and every approach makes you think. The greens were tough

GThe golf course was in excellent condition and very well maintained. The course is quite narrow, with fast greens that can be challenging, especially for beginner golfers. While this adds to the challenge for more experienced players, it may be a little demanding for those new to the game. The facilities could also be improved, as the addition of a driving range and practice nets would provide extra value and enhance the overall golfing experience.
