Salgados Golf Course

Salgados Golf sits right by Salgados Beach and alongside the protected Salgados Lagoon Nature Reserve, one of the Algarve's most striking natural backdrops. It's flat underfoot and an easy enough walk, but don't mistake that for an easy round. Water shapes your decisions all the way through, so good course management beats brute force here.

The layout is credited to Pedro de Vasconcelos, with later work by Scottish architect Robert Muir Graves. What stands out is how neatly the holes sit within a wildlife area that's known for its birdlife. It's a genuinely scenic place to play, especially when the light drops later in the day and the lagoons come into view.

As a par-72, Salgados asks for plenty of committed tee shots and sensible targets into the greens. They're relatively flat, so you won't face many unfair putts, but finding putting surfaces in regulation is the real challenge. Choose the right club, pick a clear line and you'll score. Stray offline and the scorecard can unravel quickly, especially with water tight to the landing areas on a large number of holes.

The variety across the routing keeps things interesting. Some holes reward aggressive play, others punish it. If there's any breeze off the coast, factor it in on the exposed stretches. This isn't a course where you can overpower your way to a good score. Strategy, placement and a cool head under pressure matter far more than raw distance.

Location is another strong suit. Salgados is easily reached from Albufeira, Vilamoura or the Western Algarve, making it a flexible addition to any itinerary along this famous stretch of coast. If you're building an Algarve line-up, we can slot Salgados in alongside nearby favourites and lock in tee times around your base.

Who is this for?
Golfers looking for a technical, water-heavy test in a stunning natural setting, with easy access from the main Algarve hubs.

Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers who enjoy strategic golf and don't mind being punished for wayward shots. Also suits confident higher handicappers happy to play conservatively and anyone keen to play a course that sits inside a protected nature reserve, offering wildlife and scenery alongside the challenge.

Salgados Golf Course

This wonderful golf course has been sympathetically built into a protected wildlife area, where many rare bird species make their home. Salgados has a tremendous variety of holes, ensuring that it is an intriguing test for golfers of all abilities.

The layout has, in fact, a distinct links feel to it, but it features an intricate network of lakes and streams. Along with the 13th, the signature hole is arguably the first, where there is no easy opening - golfers must thread the ball onto a fairway bordered on both sides by threatening water features.

Signature hole: Hole 1, par 4

The signature hole is arguably the first, where there is no easy opening - golfers must thread the ball onto a fairway bordered on both sides by threatening water features. In addition to this, the beautiful par 5 6th hole is said to be on of the hardest holes in the game of golf with plenty of water lining the fairways and when the wind is blowing it can play very long.

First time playing, nice layout, challenging off white tees with lots of water. Let down by condition of greens, had been worked on and left with straight line ruts so putting impossible. Appreciate greens need work but some sanding and rolling and they would at least be playable

Another fantastic course full of water hazards and palm trees. A risk reward golf course where precision off the tee will help you make a score. Lovely clubhouse area and excellent buggies. The power was out when we were there but they still managed to serve sandwiches as an option for food.

Facilities pretty poor, nets and dried out practice green. Course itself good condition, but not one I’d rush to return to.
