Signature Collection

Since 1961, Castillo Hotel Son Vida has been one of Mallorca's standout five-star stays, set in a historic castle above Palma. It's the kind of place that feels properly special the moment you arrive, but it's not stiff or showy, which is exactly what you want on a golf break.

The building's history goes back to the 16th century, and you'll spot that character throughout, from the stonework and vaulted spaces to the sense of privacy you get up on the hillside. It's also a hotel with a serious guest list. Past visitors reportedly include Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly, chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov, Claudia Schiffer and film director Pedro Almodóvar.

What makes Son Vida work so well for golfers is the combination of location and comfort. You're close enough to dip into Palma's old town, harbour and restaurant scene when you fancy it, but far enough out to feel like you're staying in a genuine retreat. Son Vida Golf sits right next to the hotel, with Son Muntaner and Son Quint both within a short drive, so you can play three quality courses without straying more than ten minutes from your room. If you're the type who wants a proper warm-up range session, 18 holes and still time for the spa, you're in the right place.

Who is this for?
Golfers and couples looking for a luxury Mallorca base that combines serious golf access with five-star facilities, fine dining and genuine historical character, all within easy reach of Palma.

Who is it best for?
Those who want the full resort experience, top-end accommodation, multiple course options on the doorstep and a hotel that feels special without being stuffy or overly formal.

Golf Courses at Castillo Hotel Son Vida

Son Vida

This is Mallorca's oldest golf course and its quality has been underlined by the fact that it has hosted the prestigious Balearic Open twice. Set amid a magnificent setting of blue skies, verdant foliage and rolling hills, Son Vida ranks among the island's most beautiful courses. Generous fairways sweep over and around gentle undulations and the trees that border the fairways call for accuracy from the tee. That being said, golfers will have to pay most attention to the water hazards and the quick, undulating greens to be sure of a good score. The entire course is a joy to play but it is most famous for its collection of challenging doglegs and the stunning closing hole – a par 5 that will tempt the longer hitters to have a crack at the green in two. Be warned though, this requires a good carry over a large water hazard and a poorly struck shot could well put a dampener on your round.

Son Quint

The Son Quint course is one of the youngest courses on the island and yet it has a distinctly mature feel to it. It hillside location offers fantastic views of the city of Palma and, of course, means the golfer has to carefully negotiate sweeping undulations in order to score well. Imposing pines and ancient olive trees add to both the beauty and the challenge and while golfers will be confident of finding the expansive greens in regulation, the tricky pin placements will make three putting a distinct possibility if the flat stick isn’t running on all cylinders. Measuring 6,780 yards this course is long enough to challenge the big hitters out there and thanks to a number of different tee positions beginners and higher handicappers can also enjoy a fair challenge.

Son Muntaner

Nestled between the hills of Son Vida and Palma, the magnificent Son Muntaner course is perhaps the most challenging of the courses on offer at this fantastic resort. Players are given a sign of things to come from the very 1st hole where a difficult approach must be played over water to a green heavily protected by bunkers. Course management is key around this stunning course as the strategic bunkering and natural undulations call for placement over power and while concentration is important to ensure a good score golfers should take time to soak up the beautiful natural surroundings as this course is home to numerous species of birds and a wide variety of Mediterranean flora. Teeing off against a breathtaking sunrise is one of the signature experiences at the club so push for an early tee time is possible.

Accommodation at Castillo Hotel Son Vida

Rooms and suites look out over either the estate grounds or the Bay of Palma, and those sea-facing views are a real highlight. Interiors are classic and elegant rather than ultra-modern, with the sort of finish you'd expect from a leading five-star hotel. If you're travelling as a couple, a standard room is more than comfortable. If you want extra space for lounging between rounds, upgrade to a suite for separate seating and a bigger bathroom.

On the facilities front, the spa is widely regarded as a standout on the island, especially if you're playing a few days on the bounce. Treatments use Maria Galland products alongside Mallorcan brand Demares, and there's plenty here for recovery and switch-off. You've also got an indoor pool, sauna and a well-equipped gym, plus a lovely outdoor pool set in terraced gardens for downtime in the sun. The outdoor pool is one of the most photogenic spots on the property, surrounded by graded terraces and manicured gardens that make it a proper retreat after a long round.

Dining is suitably high-end. Es Castell Restaurant serves refined Mediterranean cuisine with panoramic views towards Palma and the bay, the kind of setting that makes every meal feel like an occasion. The kitchen focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients and classic technique, delivering dishes that are elegant without being fussy. Es Vi is the spot for a pre-dinner glass or a post-round nightcap, backed by a strong cellar by Mallorca standards, with around 400 bottles. It's the perfect place to settle in after golf, whether you're comparing scorecards over a glass of Rioja or planning the next day's tee times.

The hotel works equally well as a pure golf base or a more rounded Mallorca escape. You're close enough to Palma to explore the old town, harbour and restaurant scene, but far enough removed to feel like a genuine retreat. It's a handy set-up for a long weekend: land, transfer, check in and you can be on the first tee quickly. For golfers who want top-tier accommodation, immediate course access and the kind of facilities that make a stay feel genuinely special, the Castillo delivers.

Apart from breakfast the dining offerings were mediocre and very expensive. After our first night experience we ate outside the hotel and because or its position away from the centre we incurred about a €35 to €40 taxi fare each evening

All the staff were welcoming, friendly, helpful and efficient. Our room was palacial and luxurious. The terrace and especially the view were outstanding. Serving tapas on the terrace made for an enjoyable alternative to the more formal main restaurant. The restaurant has a great location offering open air dining when weather permits. Only issues: another informal dining option such as italian or seafood would provide more variety. The gym would benefit from more exercise stations.

Everything about the hotel and facilities was excellent. Dining selection would have benefited from a changing menu throughout the week.
