Located on such a beautiful part of the Ayrshire coast, Trump Turnberry seems far away from the real world but is surprisingly accessible from most of the UK and less than 90 minutes from Glasgow.
The hotel at Trump Turnberry is known all over the world for taking luxury and service to new levels, with a range of exquisite leisure and dining options it is easy to see why this top class golf resort was named a Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards "Top European Resorts", 2020.

With views across the dramatic West Coast of Scotland and out to the Ailsa Craig, both golf courses at Turnberry are rightly considered to be amongst the most picturesque in the world. Firm, fast-running links turf, cavernous pot bunkers, penal rough and treacherous gorse bushes are the hallmarks of seaside golf in Scotland and the experience at Turnberry is about as natural and Scottish as it comes; you’ll even be serenaded by a lone bagpiper if you time your tee times just right.
As a host of 4 Open Championships and countless other prestigious golf events, the Ailsa Course is rightly seen the jewel in Turnberry’s crown and following the unveiling of dramatic design changes around the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse, one of the world’s best has just got even better. The newly opened King Robert the Bruce might sit in the shadow of the mighty Ailsa, but it’s a top class and equally challenging layout in its own right, boasting just as spectacular views and challenging golf.
Throw in some of the best and most comprehensive practice facilities in the UK, and all the ingredients for an unforgettable weekend of links golf are in place.
The Ailsa Course at Turnberry has hosted 4 Open Championships, a couple of which are among the most memorable in the tournament’s long and exalted history. Who could forget Tom Watson coming so close to lifting the Claret Jug at the age of 59 in 2009, or his legendary “Duel in The Sun” against Jack Nicklaus at the 1977 Open, which many believe to be the finest major championship ever staged?
Turnberry’s star attraction has long been recognised as one of the world’s most spectacular courses as well as one of the best the UK has to offer and while nobody of sound mind has ever doubted its quality, there were some who felt that it wasn’t quite reaching its full potential; until now that is.
Following recent changes to a number of holes on the Ailsa, most notably from the 4th onwards, the Ailsa now makes full use of its stunning location, with the most significant change coming in the form of the new 9th & 10th holes. Formerly a solid pair of par 4s; recent changes have seen this famous duo which sit in the shadow of the Turnberry Lighthouse transform into 2 of the most spectacular holes in the world. The 9th now plays as a par 3, where the tee shot must be struck over the bay towards a newly sited green beneath the Lighthouse, while the 10th now plays as a par 5, sweeping around Castle Port Bay towards a green perched precariously closer to the water’s edge.
With subsequent changes to the 11th in place too, creating yet another awe-inspiring par 3 along the rugged coastline, the most famous stretch of the Ailsa Course has finally had its full potential realised, both from a design and aesthetic standpoint.
Having caught your breath after such a spectacular stretch of holes from the 4th to the 11th, the Ailsa begins to take you back towards the magnificent Turnberry Hotel which sits perched high on a hill overlooking the links. You’re not done yet though, with the final four holes presenting as demanding a test as any.
The 15th now plays from an elevated tee offering panoramic views of Turnberry Bay, while the 17th, formerly a par 5, now plays as a par 4 before the final hole with its dramatic new tees located on the beachside dunes takes golfers back to the solitude of the clubhouse. Whether you’re planning your first trip to Turnberry or you’re a seasoned guest, one thing is for certain; the Ailsa Course in its newly improved guise must be seen to be believed.
Signature Hole: Hole 9, Par 3, 235 yards (Championship Tees)
The 9th tee has always been one of the most famous points on the Ailsa Course but that was largely due to it being a photo opportunity beneath the Turnberry Lighthouse, with Turnberry Bay in the background, rather than it being a world class golf hole. That has all changed thanks to the recent Mackenzie & Ebert redesign.
The 9th now plays as a par 3, which measures 235 yards from the Championship Tees – further tee positions allow less skilled players to play from more manageable positions closer to the green – and with the green set adjacent to the Turnberry Lighthouse on the far side of a rocky bay, this stunning corner of the Ailsa Course has finally fulfilled its amazing potential. After completing the 9th, golfers can take a breather and enjoy a cup of coffee in the Turnberry Lighthouse which has been transformed into arguably the finest halfway house in the world, before taking to the new par 5 10th, which certainly gives the 9th a run for its money in the race to be the Ailsa's Signature Hole.

While the Ailsa is undoubtedly the star turn at Turnberry, the newly opened King Robert the Bruce is set to rival it, providing visitors of Trump Turnberry with yet another incredible golfing experience at one of the world's most iconic destinations for golf.
A series of key features are evident in the new design including the par 5 1st hole with its split fairway divided by central bunkers, distinctive with marram grass eyebrows in contrast with the perfectly manicured revetted greenside bunkers found across the course.
Completely new holes have been created at holes 8 and 11, now transformed into brilliant par 5's with an unforgettable view out to sea as well as the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse, the focus for the 11th tee shot.
The closing hole, a demanding par 5 with a well protected green and approach located beside the Clubhouse.

Excellent hotel with attentive staff and spacious and comfortable rooms. Great views and a wonderful breakfast. The downside is £10 pints of beer and £11 for a glass of wine. We would have eaten in the restaurant but a taxi into Girvan gave a wide choice of bars and an excellent Indian restaurant. One round of drinks savings covered the cost of the taxi!

Just returned from a break at the Turnberry Resort and have to say it is the best golfing break we have ever had. We played both the Ailsa and Kintyre courses on a Your Golf Travel special offer including bed and breakfast which was excellent value for money.
The golf courses are brilliant (they can get a bit tough in the 30mph winds we played in!) and it really is a great experience to play the famous holes we've seen at The Open in past years.
The hotel was also amazing with incredible views across the golf course, out to the sea and beyond. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful either and could not do enough for us.
There’s a good choice of restaurants so you could have an
affordable meal or really splash out on something special in the 1906. We’d
definitely go again!
Paul
✓11 Nov 2014
Breathtaking and stunning were the words used by all 7 of us having breakfast in the Turnberry Hotel while overlooking the Ailsa course, Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. Our tour concluded at this amazing resort having played Prestwick previously.
The Ailsa and Kintyre courses could be played time and time again thanks to their truly spectacular views, stunning layouts and a great clubhouse. The members of staff were superb throughout the resort and the hotel was undoubtedly 5 star. Use the Spa as it’s one of the best I have seen and great place to wind down after a day on the links.
The only criticism of the Hotel would be the high prices of
the food and drink. Whilst not too over the top, it did mean we went out
for supper on the last night.
Mark
✓11 Nov 2014
We enjoyed our trip to Turnberry very much. The Ailsa Course was superb and although The Kintyre course was good and certainly worth playing once, I would not be overly bothered about playing it again and would rather pay more and play two rounds at The Ailsa as it’s one of the best courses I have played.
We also played at Prestwick which was excellent and vastly different from anything I have played before.
Thanks again to yourgolftravel.com for all the assistance with the trip.Tracey

I would just like to say a big thank you for arranging our stay at the Turnberry Golf Resort; it was everything that I could have imagined.
The food was excellent and the service impeccable throughout the hotel. Our upgraded room was stunning with beautiful views out to the sea and over the golf courses.
Sam loved the golf so much and while he said he found Ailsa course really challenging, he was in heaven all the same.
The spa facilities were amazing and I really enjoyed my time to relax.
It was well worth the money and just what a 5 star hotel should be with something for more than just golfers.
Truly first class.

There is no point in trying to describe experiencing Turnberry to the full over a couple of sunny spring days. This place is beyond words.
On the way back home, we tried to capture the pleasure of playing golf on two superb links courses, the relaxed hospitality, the iconic landscape, and I feel I must stop here or this will become a very long list of superlatives!
We can’t wait to arrange a return and we’d whole heartedly recommend this place to anyone who loves golf.

✓11 Nov 2014
I can honestly say that my group of 8 from all over England had an unforgettable break last week at Trump Turnberry. It was a break of contrasts.
The first day we all drove or flew up, then on the second day we played on the Ailsa Course in beautiful weather - shirtsleeves in November which we couldn’t quite believe! The course was in good condition, except for 3 temporary greens which were in place due to course modification for next year’s Women’s British Open. The weather was kind but the course was playing long due to earlier heavy rain. Despite this, scoring was pretty good, with several birdies enjoyed by all.
We also played the Kintyre Course which was in great condition, but the weather was the foulest most of us had ever played in, with high winds and pouring rain throughout. Obviously that made it a real test for us and for our waterproofs, most of which failed the test! I think we were the only people on the course but despite the weather, the course held up remarkably well.
The hotel was excellent as always. The rooms were fine, the staff were all very helpful, particularly in helping us deal with the bad weather, and the meal on the first night was exceptional, if a little expensive. The bar was also pricy, but that's what you expect from a top class hotel.
On the last two nights we ate at Wildings Restaurant in nearby Maidens – a 2 minute taxi ride – and we’d recommend this whole heartedly for anyone looking to save a bit of money on dinner and drinks.
Thanks for the package put together by everyone at yourgolftravel. We felt that overall the break represented very good value for money.
Turnberry is now probably my favourite overall venue in the UK.
Overall I would give the break 8 out of 10, spoilt only by
the dreadful weather on one day.

Turnberry’s location was great and the booking process was simple, with all our needs catered for efficiently by YGT.
Both golf courses were amazing and while Dundonald Links was also good, it’s not quite of the same standard.
The hotel at Turnberry is also excellent with the only gripe
would be the price of food and drinks. However this is still a must play venue
for all golf lovers.

Great course, great experience and we all want to go back soon. Just looking at the shots that the Pro's have to play from the Black tee's is scary, especially the holes before and after the lighthouse. Have your phone camera ready all the way around the course and when the sun hits Ailsa Craig it is a truly exceptional sight.

Unfortunately we started in a very heavy rain shower and the first six greens were unplayable due to widespread flooding which is a little surprising on a links course. After the sixth the rain stopped and we were able to enjoy the course and the spectacular views across the area. It was very much millionaires golf and we only saw one other player on the course as a single caught us up on the 18th!

What an amazing golf course, set up a facilities. Had an amazing day on an amazing course with amazing weather. We played with 2 members, thank you Jim and Bill so everything. We will be back. My only criticism is, you get 30 balls to hit on the driving range and if you want any more its £5 ...... REALLY! You spend all that money on a trip and you have to pay for balls on the driving range..... its a little DISSAPPOINTING! C'mon Donald, sort it out.

Another great course, difficult in its own right, tight and gorse lined on many holes. Excellent condition in all departments. Again still, sunny and dry conditions, course was well watered so not burned off anywhere. Have to plot your way round to stay out of trouble.

Great test of golf. Course is outstanding in all departments. Well presented and maintained throughout. We were lucky to play during dry, sunny, still and warm conditions, i suspect in the wind the course is a very different experience. Either way, it would be exceptional.

A tremendous experience. The history - golf wise, WWII, the castle all combined with 2 knowledgeable caddies to make this a great day!!

I don't think I will ever play a course as great as the Ailsa again. Breathtaking views and some great signature holes, punctuated by a stop at the wonderful lighthouse halfway house. A wonderful experience.

✓22 Jun 2022
Unbelievable course amazing! But extremely hard especially with a 30mph wind ! Was very annoying after 9 holes to be told your 10 minutes over at 2hr 10 minutes as it should have taken you 2 hours!!!

Amazing course made all the better by the recent changes. One of the best I have ever played. Great clubhouse if you can ignore frequent references to and pictures of Donald Trump plus Americans sitting with back to front base ball caps on.

A fantastic course. If I had to play a second round, it would be at Turnberry
David
✓29 Apr 2022
Fantastic golfing experience. Updates done to the course have made this a special place to play with a stunning stretch of holes along the coast line, helped by great views of Alisa Craig and Arran. Very welcoming/friendly staff with top quality practice areas being v close to the club house/ course. From our perspective food and drink v expensive but goes with the territory I guess. Ultimately though we all want to go back and play again (hopefully better)! Best memory , the steak and haggis pies at the halfway lighthouse!

Lovely course - the redesigned holes are excellent. Round a bit spoilt by slow play - 4 balls and caddies taking forever. No half way house - yet not told it wasn't open.

The changes made to the Ailsa course since the last Open are truly amazing with the 8 holes along the coast breathtaking but the course is still recognisable to the epic “Dual in the sun” back in 1977. The course is very playable if you choose the right tees for your handicap index.

Great golf course, with wonderful scenery, the redesign of the course in recent years is first class. I would go back and play the Ailsa course tomorrow without hesitation, it was worth every penny, but I still prefer Trump international Aberdeen which for me is right up there with the best courses in the UK

My wife and I had the golfing holiday of a lifetime - we played Celtic Manor 2010, Marriott St. Pierre, Rolls of Monmouth, Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham & St.Annes, Royal Portrush, Royal Troon, Trump Turnberry, Prestwick, Fairmont St. Andrews (Kittocks + Torrance). All the courses were fantastic with Turnberry probably the pick. Everything very meticulously and patiently organised by Sam Brooks of YGT - he was a real star for us.

I've not got the vocabulary to explain how awesome this course is. No two holes are the same. With the wind picking up on our 2nd day, it made the whole “links” golf a better experience. After the stunning 9th hole, do use the best/ most unique 1/2 way house in golf. Can't wait to go back.

✓24 Jun 2021
Considering this is a new course (in golfing terms) and the 2nd course to The Alsia. It holds up very well. The dogleg left into the sea - wow, what a surprise this is, the stretch back to the clubhouse, awesome. If you only played King Robert The Bruce, while visiting, you will not be disappointed.

One word - WOW! The only issue with playing the Ailsa is that it will affect every course you play in future (until you return)! We played in bright sunshine with about a 20mph wind. The course is faultless with stunning par 3's and jaw dropping scenery. Every hole is in immaculate condition. Booking as part of a package makes it a treat rather than a bank balance wrecker! A golf experience of a lifetime.

✓26 Oct 2020
A really enjoyable 'second' course. We played in 40mph wind which made the round 'interesting.' The holes near the coast offer fabulous views. The course was in great condition and the greens, especially considering significant overnight rain were fast and true.

✓12 Mar 2020
round was slow and hard only because of the weather conditions. In fact we were the only ones left out on the course soldiering on regardless. This is a course of immense beauty and its natural contours are beautiful. The halfway house is amazing. the weather became too much at the end unfortunately but it was the same everywhere.
Anthony
✓12 Mar 2020
Only not given the greens a five as they had been holowtined or similar. This has to be done so we accept that. the course is difficult due to the tightness of the bramble trees. Some of the holes around the halfway stage are specular beyond belief. We played it in tough conditions with the wind but still loved it.

We had lots of wind made it more tough. Rough was bad, lost a number of balls, but the place is just magnificent!
Connor
✓14 May 2019
Easier than the ailsa if you were straight. But went from light rough to bushes which meant it was easy to lose balls if you're offline. Again brilliant variety with 5 par 3s and 5 par 5s. Greens were a bit slower than ailsa and less sloping which meant it was easier to score.
Connor
✓14 May 2019
Challenging course but not as hard as i expected. Used to playing on sloping greens maybe helped. Fantastic scenery throughout the course. Holes 6 and 16 were personal favourites. Not a boring hole on the course and a brilliant variety of par 3s and 5s
Murray

✓19 Apr 2019
Provides a very good option as a second course and I t’s worth playing in its own right. Holes 8-11 were very nice, reminiscent of The Ailsa, but the other holes in amongst the gorse were also good quality
Bill
✓19 Apr 2019
A brilliant Golf course, one of the best I’ve played. The stretch from holes 4-11 in particular is world class. A lot of fun, variety to the holes, and plenty of challenge in the wind we had. Meant to re-create the Tom Watson up & down attempt on the 18th from the 2009 Open, but forgot, so will have to go back!

✓18 Apr 2019
An absolute gem of a course, our 12 man party were blown away with the layout and the views were spectacular. Half way hut (lighthouse) so expensive 4 rolls 4 beers £45 wow ! But the golf surpassed all expectations and a definite Top 3 for most of us in all the courses we have ever played
Mark

✓7 Mar 2019
An amazing experience on the Ailsa. By far the best links course I have ever played. Our initial disappointment of having to play off mats was quickly forgotten as we realised the standard of the course we were playing. At the time of playing (Mar 2019) a number of the bunkers were having work done resulting in them being GUR. Again this did not really detract from the experience although made us want to come back when all aspects of the course are in play. Never played so close to the coastline and the stretch of holes from around the 5th to the 11th were truly spectacular! An amazing experience that we would love to replicate in the summer!
Bryan
✓7 Mar 2019
Playing in the worst conditions imaginable (50mph+ winds and heavy rain) - we still managed to enjoy our game. Given the time of the year, the course was in very good condition. Although we found the greens two paced. The loop of holes around the top end of the course were the highlight (especially the par 4 9th which was spectacular. It certainly made us want to come back and play it again when the weather is slightly calmer!
