While Dunston Hall is long enough to make highly-skilled players take notice, it is also very playable for golfers of every standard, making it the ideal choice for groups and families looking for a beautiful spot for a golf and leisure break. The 22-bay driving range is the perfect place to warm up or work on a few swing changes.
Dunston Hall's best hole is the demanding par-4 16th, where your approach shot must be well struck to carry the lake that guards the front of the putting surface.

The magnificent Elizabethan façade at the end of the grandiose driveway makes visitors aware that they have arrived somewhere very special. Inside the hotel, the 166 bedrooms are made up of a range of standard and family units, in addition to the extravagant suites.
The traditional flavour of the hall can be felt most prominently in the four-poster and the attic rooms, which feature the original oak beamed ceilings. In contrast to the period features in the hotel, all bedrooms have been equipped with the modern facilities and amenities that are required of a good 4-star hotel, including internet access.
The Grade II listed building is without doubt one of the most austere venues not only in the East, but in all of England, making it the perfect choice for a golf break with a bit of old-fashioned class.
The hotel also offers three dining options, with the Brasserie restaurant serving breakfast in the mornings and dinner from 6.30pm. Alternatively, the Garden Terrace bar and Bunkers Bar offer a range of light meals and drinks throughout the day with stunning views over the hotel gardens and golf course.
Dunston Hall is a perfect retreat for some relaxation, where the health and beauty centre is the place to be pampered, with a range of excellent treatments on offer. For the more active, the hotel is fitted with a swimming pool, aerobic studio and a superbly equipped gym, in addition to the sauna, steam room and whirlpool spa. Wind down in the evening with a few frames of snooker.

The rooms were comfortable and well equipped. The hotel was clean and the restaurant food was good. Our only real concern was the bar opening times. The golfers bar closes at 17:30 unless it’s a Friday/Saturday night. The other hotel bar has last orders at 10:30. 🥴

CHeckoing in was quick and easy. The room was very nice inside and had everything needed for a short stay. Very clean room and quiet. The only negatib=ve with the room was a strong musty smell of damp in the bathroom, needed to keep the door closed whilst in the room. The restaurant areas are very good, the food excellent and reasonably priced for a hotel. The staff in the evenings and at breakfast were very good, excellent service and very pleasant.

Hotel facilities are great. The restaurant has a good menu and the quality of food was excellent for dinner. Remember however, you will spend more than the £32 allowance from the booking. Hotel room hot (sadly no aircon), other than that the room way comfortable and clean. Like most chain hotels, it’s heading toward needing a refurbishment of the rooms in3 the next 10 years.

firstly we were not given clear instructions on how to get to our room. We meet 4 other couples on route trying to find their rooms too. ended up going back to reception and asking again. only one bath towel and hand towel in room spent ages getting through to reception and asking for more towels. The plug in the sink did not work so just had to let the water run.

Extremely overpriced both in the bar and in the restaurant. Alot of the furniture was old, rundown and broken/breaking. In severe need of an update and modernisation along with a review of their pricing structure... Upon arrival we were met with someone who didn't know how to use the booking system. Thankfully this was quickly resolved by Andrea. Restaurant staff incredibly friendly and helpful so no qualms there. My one downer on the whole trip was how much the food and drink costed

Room was clean, comfortable and functional although the beds were a lot firmer than expected (obviously personal preference here). The bar and brasserie were good and the meals ok. The £32 dinner allowance doesn't go far though so be ready for extras on your room bill. Beware the hotel is 'dog friendly' and we were disturbed by barking from the room next door. Reception said we should have told them and they would have sorted it....

We were given a room in Kellet House, which is not in the main part of the hotel & unlike the room we had when we stayed on a golf break in June, the room was dated, the tiles in the bathroom were dirty & there were no USB sockets for our phones, golf watches & my hearing aid charger. Only 2 electric plug sockets is not enough. However, the beds were comfortable & the golf course was fantastic. The staff were polite & friendly

This is our fourth stay at Dunston and the first time we have ever been upgraded in all of our travels, so thank you ! The bar prices are higher, but this to be expected at these retreats. Was disappointed to find again the dinner was a different set up and on this occasion we had a budget of £28 to spend on dinner. This may sound a lot but when average main course was around £24 and starters around £10, you know you will be needing to pay more. Would rather the set menu as previous or even better the carvery which was lovely. The most disappointing thing was breakfast. We went down at 9 as not playing golf till after 11, this was a big mistake. No mushrooms, hash browns, bacon or mixed berries left. The lady did apologise and said there would be a delivery later ! No sure how it helped the massive queue who didn’t get a full English. This was really disappointing as it sets you up for the day. We shall return and hope these issues could be addressed as the hotel would know how many they need to cater for on each day. Again thank you for the upgrade it was beautiful.

The hotel feels dated, we went to the bunkers bar after our golf which was nice and had a snooker table so we decided to go back to this later to have a drink and play snooker only to find when we got back to the bar at 6.30pm it had closed. The main hotel bar was okay but no pool table as it was stated there was.

A great golf break stay & would thoroughly recommend to anyone.Dinner was of excellent quality.Given a £28 p.p allowance & you pay for anything over that which was very fair.Pre-dinner drink expensive but wine at table was good value.Standard room was very good, large & bathroom excellent.Would return for sure.

Very nice Hotel , rooms and bedding excellent, couldn’t fault the staff, I really think they need a secret visitor to check out the food. My wife and I had lunch on the first day, my wife had a fish finger sandwich which looked awful and had no taste whatsoever, I had a 2 cheese rarebit , well it came as a cheese sandwich, where the bread had been toasted on the outside, and again absolutely tasteless. The evening meal was similar, my confit duck looked as though it was a ready meal which had been reheated. The second evening I ordered the modules marinier, the liquid which should be the best bit was very thin and watery and completely tasteless, the staff were very good in offering me something else on the menu but by then I was comletely disenchanted with the menu , even the apple pie I had the previous evening looked as though it had been bought in, and reheated. Very disappointing.

✓30 Aug 2022
Let's start with the good. Food, bar, staff, pool and steam room were excellent. BUT our break was spoilt by our boiling hot room at the top of the hotel. Spacious enough with one tiny double window with only one opening, facing another building with similar windows. The internal bathroom had no extractor and on entering the bedroom for the first time an old squeaky ceiling fan was in action to little effect. We spent a very uncomfortable night, resulting in little sleep. Having complained we were provided with two air conditioning units that did alleviate the atmosphere somewhat, but they were too noisy to have on at night, so we tried to sleep in hot, stuffy conditions. We saw other residents being provided with these units also, for the top floor. The ground and first floor areas felt cool in comparison, but as soon as one started to walk up the stairs to the top, second floor the heat hit! We understand it is summertime, but daytime temperatures outside last week were pleasant mid 20s centigrade and not excessive. Perhaps the location of the pool and steam room in the basement of our building was a factor, as everyone knows, heat rises. If so, the hotel should address the problem, instead of makeshift, ineffectual short term measures. Are the management and yourselves not concerned about repeat bookings? Also booking this golf break resulted in us staying in the lowest priced rooms presumably, but we would not book this again, which is a shame as we really liked other aspects of the hotel and it's location.

✓22 Jun 2022
Unfortunately, I think the hotel is still struggling with staff shortages. There were nowhere near enough staff in the restaurant and the standard of food was awful. Our main course was brought to us before our starter on the first night and the quality of the food was dry and tasteless. The breakfast selection was terrible and items (such as yogurt) were left empty for ages and the eggs were congealed under the heat. The spa staff were good, but we were not impressed by any other staff (except Daniel in the restaurant on the second night). The lady on reception when we checked out was totally disinterested and most of the restaurant staff looked to be about 15 years old and had no knowledge at all. Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone until they sort these issues out.

Visually Dunston Hall looks grand, surrounded by acres all well kept land and golf course. I stayed in room 070, decor and all furnishing to a high standard with a massive 6ft wide bed. The golf course was enjoyable, and on returning to the Bunkers Bar after golf we were told no food was available because the chef was on holiday. Some guys in our group like a pint of real ale. We were told they were out IPA but Doombar was available. We purchased some drinks then had to walk over to the main restaurant area to get some food. The following day, after golf were were told the Bunkers Bar had now run out of doombar. The restaurant served nice food but were told several options on the menu were not available.eg chicken and lamb pies. We ordered a bottle of wine from the menu, and our preferred choice was not available. The following morning no hot water was available in our rooms. To summarise; Dunston Hall provides great facilities but seems badly managed. My personal choice would be not to return there. Regards Vic Wiffen (Re group booking made by Mr J Riches)

We loved our stay at Dunstan Hall, the golf course is spectacular. Spa facilities wonderful staff exceptional. My only criticism of this trip would have been we were treating our friends who are chefs, as we wanted them to have a couple of nights of à la carte meals but they didn’t have to cook themselves. And because of staff shortages we ended up having cold carvery. Slightly disappointing, but still had a fabulous stay.

Staff were exceptionally good. Polite, helpful and approachable. Absolutely no complaints about staff. I was responsible for a group of 22 golfers and 5 non golfers and I only heard one grumble which was to do with the swimming pool area where on 2 days running the time switch hadn't been reactivated in the sauna which meant it was cold at 3.30pm in the afternoon.

The stay at Dunstan Hall was unfortunately impacted by Covid and a bad breakfast! We were due to tee off at 3pm on Saturday, with the plan to use the spa, pool and gym on Saturday morning/afternoon, however, upon arrival (Friday) we were told that the showers were not in use and no changing rooms were available. So we could use the gym (only for 45 minutes), but would have to change in the toilets without the use of the showers afterwards. So unfortunately we had to sit for 4 hours whilst we waited for our tee time to arrive. The breakfast 'buffet' was served (but not table service), so we had to queue whilst the buffet ran out of eggs, beans, hash browns, pretty much everything. Eggs did arrive but were half cooked and full of shells. The waitress did very kindly bring some beans to our table to save us queuing any longer. To be fair to the staff, they were very friendly/helpful, and I hope the service they are allowed to provide can get back to normal post covid.

The venue was easy to find and very impressive looking. We were met in the Golf (Bunker)bar to (group) book in & fill in test & trace forms. Rooms were spacious & comfortable if a little tired looking. The restaurant coped well considering the covid situation, breakfast & evening meals were very good although portions were a little on the small side. The Bunker bar in the evening (up to 10pm)was ideal for our group size, the staff were friendly and hard working.

Lovely Hotel ,rooms, facilities and staff very good. Only concern was that we were booked on B,B and evening meal. When we arrived we found that the evening meal was £28 towards Al a carte menu. Same menu each night and all rich food which seemed to focus more on display than balance of ingredients. There should be one plain dish each evening.

The whole weekend was nothing short of excellent. We played Wensum Valley, Barnham Broom and played and stayed at Dunston Hall. All three courses were in very good shape and had recovered well from the drought this summer. Our party of 25 persons all agreed that the whole experience was such that they all want to go back again.

The course has been designed in mind to catch you out with lots of tree lined fairways, bunkers and dog legs. The greens are in good condition. The tee off boxes have abit of wear but it’s been a dry summer. Overall a nice course to play with 18th hole as the signature hole in front of Dunstan Hall itself.

Firstly, the staff in the golf shop and the Bunkers bar were all very good, pleasant and helpful. The course was fine but we did not get to see it at it's best due to the high winds during the time of our visit. That said we enjoyed both days and would happily go back again. Greens were in very good condition, fairways were good but lots of leaves and small branches blowing about due to the winds.

Narrow course with lots of hidden hazards. So you need to carefully navigate the course. Day 1 was a voyage of discovery as there are no hole layout maps on the tee, so be prepared to us a GPS map of some sort. Despite this a very enjoyable round. Day 2 was a completely different experience as we knew what to expect and how to attempt to play the course. If you are a big hitter who like long holes and wider fairways, Dunston Hall will not be the course for you. However, if you like a course where you need to be accurate and play the bag to the course, you will really enjoy this track.

Course was very good for layout but greens was slow and you couldn’t stop on and if you chip before it would bounce anyway. so difficult but had fun
Gary

The golf was the same for everyone, but we were disappointed with overall worn appearance greens were sandy and a number had been hollow tired. Disappointed as we had no insight from yourselves about overall condition

✓15 Jul 2025
The front 9 is harder than the back. The course was extremely dry so lots of balls were lost from hard ground and running in water or bouncing off in all directions. This course will be better when we have had some rain

An undulating course with plenty of hazards thrown in, some of which were visible from the tee box, others less so. lots of trees and water, which, re the latter, needed carrying. Bunkers and greens in good condition with varying degrees of jeopardy. overall the course played well and provided us all with a decent degree of challenge.

Tricky little course. Understandable that the fairways were dry and bouncy. Greens good. One round was ok for pace and the other round was slow following a society.

✓19 May 2025
Course was fantastic just a shame that the halfway shack wasn't open once over the three days. First three holes the grass was extremely dead and dry however this ment you could putt from halfway down the fairway if you wanted to which was fun. First birdie on the 2nd hole due to the roll my ball could get from the first shot out the t box. Staff didn't make us aware that we would need to split 3 and 2 when we said we were playing a 5 ball untill someone came out to find us on hole 4-5 which put a damper on the day. We should have been notified when checking into the course.

Tee times good. We had a 4 ball in front of us that were in go slow mode and would not let us through- 5hrs
Mark
✓22 Apr 2025
Very tight fairways if you're used to wide open spaces. Not a long course but you have to be precise to score well. The 540 yard par 5 15th was a monster into a slight breeze though. The course was in reasonable shape considering the lack of rain; limited grass growth created fairways like concrete and fringes very difficult - talk about tight lies! Greens were typical of a high traffic course and despite being in need of water they ran true if a little slow. Tee boxes were disappointing (untidy with one being played off pure mud) but I understand the need to protect the summer layout.

A great 18 Hole Woodland Course. Each hole has a different challenge, and has a character of its own. Up hills, down hills, strategically placed greens which are guarded by water and sand alike, and over hanging trees making approaches challenging.

Staff in golf shop very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately they had had a lot of rain so we didn't see the course at its best. We enjoyed playing the course which was difficult with all the water hazards to negotiate. Due to the rain on the second day it was a very slow round. Would like to return when it was dry to appreciate the interesting course.

✓18 Oct 2023
Golf course is a good layout and course in reasonable condition, although a few of the tee boxes were absolutely awful. For a fairly short course, it's not an easy course and requires good course management and accuracy. No food in the spike bar after was a little bit disappointing, but probably standard across almost all golf clubs on a cold Monday afternoon.

✓5 Oct 2023
The course was very busy with a lot of 4 balls which made it slow going. The course was well kept and it is a tranquil setting. Tight fairways and some tricky and interesting holes.a course guide for a fiver is a must.

the coarse is full of tactical hole if you hit the ball a long way, often doglegs and ponds are in places your drive will end up, so it place a iron and pitch on.

Firstly the pro-shop staff were fantastic, our golf break provider hadn't submitted tee off times to pro-shop but we were slotted in nevertheless at very convenient times! On 2nd day we were behind a very slow (and apparently renowned!)four ball who held up up continuously & not let through. Two ball behind us gave up after 13 holes. However the course is in good condition despite heavy rain before & very scenic.People in bar & on course very friendly.Enjoyed playing.

Golf was great though thought I had pre paid for buggies but was surprised to find they were not and hadn’t even been booked fir the Saturday and Sunday. Luckily they had a spare for Saturday but unfortunately not on the Sunday which spoilt the round as was too tiring without a buggy due to health issues.
Stephen
✓9 Oct 2022
A lot of bare areas, probably weather related. Biggest issue was slowness of greens, recently spiked and sanded, which was worse on second day due moisture appearing to lift sand up to surface
Geoff
✓23 Sep 2022
Fairways very sparse due to hot summer. Played pick and place and struggled to find a decent lie. Greens were slow. Tees were scrappy. Could be a really nice course as ideal setting and a good variation of holes.
Steve
✓30 Aug 2022
As a result of this summer's heatwave, the course was dry as a bone. Fairways were straw coloured or just hard, dry earth, creating many variable bounces and continuous unbelievable rolls.....some into water! Lost quite a few balls, but we did reasonably well considering we had never played the course before.

Being a Sandy area the course was playing hard under foot, greens very good. would be great if it had a Marshall or someone over looking the 1st tee and organising the tee times better, as a society we had afternoon tee times as there were no other tee times apparently even though we booked many months ago but we sat waiting with big gaps between groups teeing off, before we could get away. But a great time had by all.

Nice golf course which has established itself since I played it last, but obviously well used. Some of the greens were excellent, but a number had been hollow tined and not watered. A number of tee boxes were well worn and in need of attention. The rounds were rather slow as we were a 2 ball amongst many 4 balls. We'd probably go back mid-week in future when it may not be so busy.

✓21 Oct 2020
The area had had quite a bit of rain recently so the fairways were very heavy, the staff had clearly had to work hard to get the course ready so it could be played. Some of the the pins were changed which made it a little more interesting.the only disappointing aspect were bunkers which were rock hard and clearly hadn't been raked or kept up to standard, this made it very difficult if landing in them. The greens were slow but that's to be expected with so much rain, all in all a well presented course that tests every aspect of your game
Alex
✓14 Oct 2020
They had obviously had a lot of rain in the past few weeks here the course lay out was great good variety of long and short holes the tee boxes were in bad condition the fairways had not been cut for a while and the greens very bumpy but like I said probably down to the wet weather
Brian
✓10 Oct 2020
The layout was great with no two holes being the same, dog leges, ponds etc. a good selection. Unfortunately, the course was water logged, which made it hard to play, which reflected in the scores. So, I wouldn’t suggest planning a golf trip in the winter. Must thank the golf club, no buggies were allowed out on the course, due to water logged course, but made allowance for one buggy for our 90-year-old member.
Ann
✓8 Oct 2020
Although there are a number of par 4’s and only 3 par 5’s the course played very hard as the fairways were very wet and the divots were quite deep due to the wet fairways. The greens were overall slow due to the rain and quite difficult to get the ball rolling. The course layout and tree lined fairways made the drives quite challenging but very pretty. It will be nice to come back in the summer.

Friday: due to a torrential downpour we felt the course was unplayable due to the amount of surface water on the course. Saturday: weather improved only slightly but course playable. Sunday: showed some after effects of the poor weather but was playable. The course, under better conditions would be a joy to play, lovely woodland setting with enough difficult & interesting holes to keep all happy. All of our group of 18 said they would return (hopefully under better conditions)

I have labelled the course essy as it is quite short and wide off the fairways. There are some challenging holes though and the condition of the course was excellent. 5 minutes between tee times is not enough, especially when large societies are on the course, unmarshalled with not much idea bout how to play the game!
