The renowned Fota Island Golf Club is set amidst the fantastic scenery of the estate itself. While golf on the site dates back to the 1800s, it was not until Christy O'Connor Jr. and Peter McEvoy laid out their new Deerpark course in 1993, that Fota Island became a serious golfing destination. Since its inception, the championship course has played host to the Irish Open in 2001, 2002 and 2014 and has established a reputation as one of Ireland's best.
2014 Irish Open
Finland's Mikko Ilonen led from wire-to-wire to claim his fourth European Tour title at Fota Island. Ilonen carded a final round of 70 to finish 13-under par, one shot ahead of Italy’s Edoardo Molinari, with Sweden's Kristoffer Broberg and English duo Danny Willett and Matthew Baldwin another shot back in third.
What the pros say:
“I love the venue. It’s a great venue for a golf tournament — the setting, the type of course it is. There’s plenty of birdies to be made out there. We seem to get better weather down here at Cork. Nice practice facilities, hotel on site; what more could you ask for in a venue, [and an] airport nearby? I hope it comes back and gets onto a rota that it comes back here regularly.” - Padraig Harrington
“I believe they are talking about Fota Island as a venue the next two or three years. I’m all over it. I think it’s a great venue.” – Graeme McDowell

The Belvelly's par-72 layout includes the new nine holes added by Jeff Howes in recent times, and is a formidable test at 7,121 yards from the back markers. Interesting features have been worked into the design, not least on the signature 16th hole, where visiting golfers face the challenge of firing their approach shot over an old quarry to a small target.

The par-73 Barryscourt Course also takes in the new nine holes, and is the latest addition to Fota Island's impressive portfolio of golf. The course is a monster from the back tees, but the characteristic slope of the greens will also undoubtedly challenge the putting of every visitor. The highlight of Fota's latest course is the redesigned 8th, which features an array of hazards to be safely negotiated.

Great experience at Fiat Island From checking in to checking out. The staff were very friendly Rooms were luxurious Food was excellent Although some of the course was not playable due to the wet weather we managed to get round without getting wet. The course and the greens were in great condition Definitely one to revisit 🥰

Rather busy during our stay and was advised at check in we would have to eat offsite due to fully booked restaurants on the Saturday evening, our first day at the hotel. Fortunately after intervention from a manager we were informed a table would be found. Rather bizarrely we found ourselves in the middle of a rather large family celebration party. Tip for future, book a table once tee times have been secured. Menu was rather limited but reasonable prices in the bar. Sunday was less busy and less stressful experience.

The course is beautifull. Because off the heavy rain it is difficult to say anything about the ondition of the course. It was all wet. Greens were very good.

decent track but I'm struggling to give it more than 7/10 - a 'filler' course then rather than a 'must go'

Played on day two and the first loop was easier than the day before. We knew what to expect! Second loop good challenge played under my handicap and enjoyable experience making birdie on the 18th

Opening loop of 9 holes rather straight forward wide fairways and greens. Second loop (Part of Deer Park layout) proved more of a challenge with some hidden hazards. 3 1/2 hours was a good pace given the number of people on the course.

Facilities in the resort were first class. We used buggies at 35 euros. Fairways and tee areas were a bit damaged and this may reflect society outings. Greens were slick and true. Good variety of holes. Played in sunny and breezy conditions

Hard to evaluate as it was pouring down and we were the only ones on the course (that whole day!). We turned up to check that it was probably closed (Cork GC was for instance) but the pro shop told us no. We had waterproofs and nothing better to do, so... Hard to judge course as towards the end the greens were being casual water (ca. 1500).
