The predominant feature is water, as the course's name suggests, with no fewer than 16 lakes placed strategically to attract wayward golf balls. The 220-acre landscape that is the backdrop to the golf course is in fact a nature reserve, and the wildlife and stunning panorama only serve to embellish the golfing experience. The course is fortunate to feature a cutting-edge irrigation system, designed to drain the greens effectively, ensuring that they roll true throughout the year.
At its longest, the golf course at Hellidon Lakes will measure over 6,100, and will challenge the better players, while the different combinations and tee markers ensure that the resort is perfect for golfers of every standard.

Room was really comfortable, staff were really friendly and helpful, there are good facilities - although you do have to pay extra for most things, and the food was fine. (Although there was a LOT of salt in the breakfast) it was just that the main bar and dining area was so beige! Just one big area with unpleasant yellow lighting and no character. With the dreary lift music on repeat, it definitely made the experience less enjoyable.

No sports bar open or spikes bar . Sports bar not manned or open on a Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Doesn’t feel like a golf resort at all , pro shop poor with hardly anything inside it .Hotel feels way too corporate, disappointing and would not return to stay at resort

Nice big hotel with plenty of space in the lounge/bar/restaurant area. Sports bar downstairs doesn't have a licence to show any sports so a bit disappointing. Bar is a bit pricey. Food at the restaurant for dinner was very good and breakfast was excellent.

The room i had was very quiet and easily accessible, bathroom was very clean, bed comfortable and furniture fit for purpose. Room would benefit from air conditioning, as it became increasingly warm during the night and perhaps a slightly larger TV would add to the experience. The breakfast and dinner were brilliant and the team workings these areas could not do enough for you, speaciol thanks to Vicky in the mornings with cutlery, informing when the refills were coming and advising what times were best to come down in the morning, great to see someone who really enjoys their role and take sand interest in the guests. Prebooking of dinner is a great idea, saves so much time for the hotel. Thought the shower supplies when a bit meagre as after a round as it would be good to wash without having to ration the soap etc

The accommodation was alright, no fridge to put cooled drinks in or other items. The bath didn’t work, the shower didn’t have enough pressure in it. All the golfers said the same thing with the shower. The beds were standard. The food was a set menu which was to a good standard. On the Friday night , I think we were the only ones eating. The drinks were expensive and 20 % percent off make them normal price for hotel standards. One of the golfer had to leave on the Friday before playing golf, he received a phone call, family member had not been well. They got a taxi ( 2.5 hours) back home straight away, felt for him. Hellidon Lakes is not up to the standard it should be. Recommend Your golf travel agent should go and see for yourself !

Whole trip worked well for a group of 32 golfers. Easy to check in , comfortable rooms, plentiful breakfast, good evening meal with a good choice range, Bars and seating areas very comfortable and welcoming. Staff all helpful, attentive and polite. Only gripe, as usual these days, no bitter in the bar - why are beer drinkers being penalised?

The hotel was clean and well presented , the rooms were absolutely fine apart from I requested a double bed but only go 2 singles the rest of my group had no regrets The restaurant was ok breakfast was ok but the evening set menu was very limited even more so when they ran out of beef having said that the quality was good The bar was tiny and massively expensive £7.00 a pint also had to queue a lot as sharing it with a wedding party Not the greatest of stays coupled with our other problems but I will say the staff especially the manageress went above and beyond to help us

We arrived on Sun 22nd Sept during a lull in the rain. We fully expected to be told the course was closed but quite the reverse. We were able to play the Hellidon course and had the option of the lakes or valley. We did not play on the Monday due to the continuing rain. However the whole experience was the best the hotel could do under the extreme weather conditions. Our evening meal and breakfast were excellent as was the bar by the restaurant. Would highly recommend this venue.

Hotel facilities were good golf course not so .front 9 was very difficult back nine better, the flag system we had no idea where the flags were on the greens ( no indication ) electric buggies were not kept clean left under trees not value for money £35 a round, we asked for a double bed and got two singles also a walk in shower got a bath, we also asked for the room to have A nice view and got one facing the bin collection area staff were very friendly,if I had been staying longer wound have asked to change the room. We asked for a rubber shower Matt and one was brought to the room also the shower was leaking badly and got repaired it. But in saying all that we enjoyed our stay quality of food very good 😊

✓14 Aug 2024
Wonderful staff with special mention for Craig, duty manager who went out of his way to look after us and remedy a couple of issues we experienced. Main issue was having to request for our party’s rooms to be made up rather than it being done automatically, not a good practice! Secondly, being charged £20 per person to use the spa when several components of it were not working, which resulted in me complaining and guests receiving a 50% price reduction because of this.

The hotel is in a lovely setting and and easy to get to. The evening meal was lovely and the breakfast well stocked with something for everyone. The bedrooms were ok and air conditioned however a “superior twin” was a double pushed apart with 10cm between them so that could have been better. The beds could have been better as they were soft and didn’t feel hotel quality. Now onto the staff. I have given a 3 star as an overall which is unfair to the restaurant staff, they were awesome, very attentive and seemed happy to be there. This is in stark contrast to the guy who was on reception when we checked in. If he was an example of the staff I would have scored it a 1. He was rude, condescending and spoke to us like dirt, every single member of the party commented on his bad attitude. Overall the value for money was good and the experience after check in was fantastic

✓20 May 2024
A great location and lovely staff but my trip was marred by being allocated a room above a wedding reception’s disco which meant that the excessively thudding bass noise of rave music on Saturday night until midnight impacted on a fully enjoyable stay. The hotel receptionist told me next morning to take up my issue with Your Golf Travel even the hotel allocated me this room. Beware of such shoddy room allocation when checking in.

✓17 May 2024
The Hotel was very busy with 350 Tesco delegates on 16th. Impression was that there were not sufficient staff at times at the busy points. There was a significant issue on 15th as the Golf Pro did not turn up for work so the Pro Shop was closed. This left the Reception to deal with angry golfers, some being abusive. The main problem was that booked or otherwise buggies were not available. As they did not stock electric trollies my husband was unable to play. We had a sandwich lunch on 15th.. I had a cheese sandwich which consisted of 3 ‘Kraft’ cheese slices. I did show it to the chef who apologised. The evening meal was really good and because of all the fuss during the day the Receptionist Hayley - worth her weight in gold - gave us a complimentary bottle of Prosecco.

with numerous golfing groups and a wedding, they need more bar staff to serve their customers, spent too long queuing. In addition with the football and rugby world cup showing downstairs in the sports bar, they didn't open/man the bar in here until gone 11pm when the upstairs bar closed. so if you anted a drink whilst watching the sport you had to go back upstairs. Apparently this is to keep the noise down for the rest of the hotel guests after 11pm, which is ironic give the noise of people up and down the corridors outside the bedrooms all night through to around 04:30!

A lot of things are in need of maintenance/updateand the hotel looks tired. The bar is expensive. The bowling was a good addition but half tye lanes broken down. There's no spa facilities open and according to the hotel hasn't been for 2 years, which is very disappointing when it is advertised on the site. Staff try to help but management disinterested.

✓19 Jun 2023
Unfortunately this wasn’t a pleasant experience for us, the hotel lacked attention and we were not informed that the spa facility was under renovation so no sauna or steam room and treatments required at least 48 hours notice. Our twin room turned out to be a double which meant we had to move and we were then placed in a smaller room with no air-conditioning and no telephone. We had air-conditioning units running outside the bedroom windows all night and had to sleep with a fan on. The evening meal was very sub standard and when I sent my fish back for being over cooked and dry was informed it would be 15 minutes to recoil something (leaving my partner eating alone) so I accepted the offer of keeping the same meal! Considering there was only 5 people in the restaurant at the time it was appalling service. Thankfully the breakfast made up for it and our waitress Vicky was wonderful and friendly. No wonder she’d been working there 15 years she clearly loved her job and was perfect for hospitality.

Hotel was really great, no issues. There was a lot of noise at night from a wedding party, but We had no problem with sleepng. but I would probably advice, when such functions are on, let guests know during check in. 2nd thing is we happended to be staying on the hottest weekend of the year. Hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming. Rooms are fine and shower pressure was great (not what other reviews had said). A view overlooking the course would have been nice as the hotel was virtually empty when we stayed. Dinner was very nice-food was delicious. Bar prices don't need to be so high. Buffet breakfast was good but the self-serve hot food was removed 30 minutes before breakfast ended so you couldn't go up for any seconds-not a big deal but don't advertise a buffet if it's not going to be. I booked the weekend for my sons 40th birthday as a present, to be shared with his best friend. Having paid a considerable cost for 2 nights stay including breakfast and 3 rounds of golf, I found the overall costs and promised facilities pricey and misleading. This was booked over 3 months ago through an agency. It promised spa, swimming pool, gym, plenty of bars, even a bowling alley. But in reality without any word from the hotel or booking agency the spa and swimming pool area was closed for refurbishment!… The option of bars were minimal as the bar area in bowling alley was taken over by some high flyer on the Saturday evening, ensuring that it was as good as out of bounds to general public. After booking a bowling slot on the Saturday evening, this too was impossible, by the taking over of the alley area by afore mentioned high flying local celeb!..the only bar available was upstairs far from general area where we fancied sitting! Therefore zero facilities were sampled during our stay of 2 nights, 3 days… even the rounds of golf were slowed down and became frustrating after waiting on course for over 40 minutes on some holes due to in house competitions at times. The grounds promise good holes, but it looked tired and scruffy on some holes at times… some feedback would be good, especially after it was purchased as a surprise weekend present at a considerable cost ! Really sad to say that my birthday gift to my partner at this hotel was not the pleasant stay we hoped. We were horrified to find our bathroom had not been cleaned with the bath covered in hairs where someone had obviously shaved. It was covered! The food was good but limited.....but we were told afterwards that we could have upgraded for a better menu. Would have been great to know this before the meal. We were then kept awake all night by rowdy guests outside our window. After our round of golf on Sunday we returned to the hotel for a drink and lunch to find that all the doors were locked but no sign to explain why. Its such a shame as the golf course was amazing.

The hotel is very good. Iv'e marked it down for a few reasons, firstly we were given accommodation in the roof space, this presented twp issues, i kept banging my head on the valleys that form part of the roof as I had to duck down to get to me bed. The other issue this caused was the shower pressure was very poor, it just dribbled out, other than that, the room was alright. Iv'e just returned from Turkey were the overall facilities were excellent so I know a good hotel when I stay at one. The staff were excellent and special mention to the catering manager who went out of her way to help us. Breakfast was good as was were the evening meals. The SPA and pool was unavailable which was a disappointment to most of my guests. The golf was very picturesque and we all loved it, one criticism was that the greens were very spongy, they did cut them on Saturday morning which improved them. If we stay there again,. it won't be on the third floor.

We were in room 167, a twin which was a good size for the two of us. Clean & comfy with a decent shower in a good size bathroom. Only downside was the price of a pint at over £6 each, not justified.

Our room was clean but quite old-fashioned and the bed was not very comfortable as two single beds had been put together to make a double, making an uncomfortable ridge down the middle. Whilst we found the food in the restaurant was good, the restaurant itself was almost completely empty and void of any atmosphere and it felt as though we were eating in an open plan office building! We thought that the staff were not particularly friendly or welcoming. Most disappointingly though, the pool and spa facilities were all closed - a fact that we were not made aware of until after we had booked the hotel and even after reading on the Golf travel website that the spa facilities was a ‘good reason to choose this hotel’.

We had a room that looked like it was decorated in the 80s, the bathroom had a really noisy extractor fan. The Laminated floor that was pulling away. We found not even order room service with out having to pay for it over the phone. The staff were under trained they seemed to have no idea on how to work a restaurant and come across rude. Considering the restaurant was empty, the service was very slow. I was told off when I approached the buffet to pick up a banana. She had to pick it up place it on a plate then pass it to me. The food was really good very well cooked and presented. The spar was not open. The pool was not open The bowling alley was not open If we knew this before booking I would of gone elsewhere. Being a main holiday time i.e Easter, we were surprised how quiet it was. Overall it was ok, however, dinner on our first night was a little frustrating as the service was a bit disjointed. For example we had to ask ref what our subsidised amount was and it was like an after thought, that should be an initial brief? Bread rolls had to be asked for and weren’t presented on initial sit down, that took over 20 mins to arrive and didn’t come with our starters when we really could have required them. Starter plates weren’t cleared prior to our mains arriving which is pretty sloppy in our opinion. At times we thought we were in Farley Towers! Evening 2 was more cohesive and like to thank Oli our waiter for his service and courtesy throughout.

The hotel is around 20 mins away from the motorway. All of our rooms were clean and tidy. They were all very hot though, so we slept with the windows open. Lovely views over the local countryside and the golf course. All the food we had in the evening was delicious, the only exception being the cheesecake. Breakfast was super, lots of choice and all decent quality. Staff were friendly throughout our stay.

Really nice course. Fairly hilly, so quite hard work getting around, but no long straight boring holes which was nice. - it wasn’t easy, but it was interesting and a nice place to play. The greens were a bit poor in places but it was October so may have been down to the weather. Our legs definitely knew about it after 2 rounds.

Some very unusual holes on all three courses, making it a very testing round. The green were good condition in the middle areas but the outside have suffered during the summer i believe, a little patchy and bare in some place. Don't think i could see any toilets around the course, not much of an issue for the males, but not sure where female players could go. A good variety and types of hole, which all looked very picturesque when looking around the course from height. Biggest draw back was having to wait for tee off, very large groups waiting around the tee's , can be quite distracting when you have 20 plus people standing behind you waiting for their turn. Really enjoyed our three rounds

We thoroughly enjoyed playing all three 9 hole courses. Recent weather has made the course challenging and extremely fast! We hired buggy’s for two of the 4 days and played 27 holes on each day plus 18 holes on the first and last days. Very helpful Pro-shop Staff (we changed our tee times on each day) and overall we had a fantastic four days of golf with amazing weather.

Was very busy on the Sunday so the round was very slow. The fairways were very scorched as expected but the greens were also very patchy. What water they have could have been spent making sure they kept on top of the greens. Apart from that we found it quite challenging but very enjoyable. Thank you.

The pro shop was very poor, it contain nothing. The hotel/ pro shop didn’t take cash at all, just credit card. Most of the buggies were broken. The buggies cost £40 a round. The brakes on our buggy failed. The assistant in the shop did didn’t seem that bothered. after the final round I asked 16 golfers what they thought, they all said they wouldn’t come back again. The facilities are poor. I tried to speak to the person in charge of the pro shop, but they didn’t come out their office to discuss the over inflated price of the buggies. Not allowed to use the leisure facilities, which was a complete joke! I would rate the golf facilities 2 star, golf course 2 star. No green keepers on site to tidy the course.

Great set up. The rain over previous days and weeks had made certain areas boggy and the tee boxes were poor but in general all good.
David
✓8 Oct 2024
Considering the recent rain the course was as you would expect, some boggy areas but generally OK. The greens were unexpectedly fast and tricky which caught out everyone on occassion. I was expecting more water hazards given the name of the course but it was the greens that made the course much more difficult than the slope rating would suggest, The down side was the pro shop was not open on the Monday so I was pleased I picked up cards for both days on Sunday. It also meant that getting markers for the longest drive and nearest the pin would have been difficult but as it happens the ones we used on Sunday were where we left them. Buggies also needed to be arranged at the hotel reception on Monday. It wasn't a great problem but it would have been good to have been told the arrangements on Sunday so we knew what to expect on Monday.

Ok firstly when I booked this trip I told the booking agent that due to age and health of the group going I must have buggies reserved as most of my party were not capable of walking any great distance I was told this had been done and 2 had been reserved for each day and not to worry as they had plenty of mor were required. I checked this was the case when i arrived I found out that none had been booked luckily we managed to get sorted on the first day but none on the second day and the pro shop didn’t seem to care to much just saying all the buggies had been booked it was only when the manageress got alerted by a waitress who asked why we all looked miserable that she intervened and some how sorted it so we got to play she also made sure we were sorted for the last day but because everyone else was walking on a very hilly course it was heading for a 5hr + round everyone was a bit fed up by now so elected to stop after 9 and go home early The other problem was when booking I was told it was 3 set of 9 holes so we would play a different 18 each day but no they decided not to use one of the 9 holes so we had the same course every day which is not what we wanted As for the condition of the course it was fine apart from the greens and set up for some strange reason the green staff had seemed to either cut or iron the greens down the slopes which caused any putt down hill stimping around 16 but uphill about 4 basically making it unplayable, I watched several people on the first with a 10ft putt knock off the green and 80yds back down the fairway this just added to a very slow round and to be honest it wasn’t enjoyable at all I have spent the last 15 years in the golf industry and have never seen any greens this stupid also one of my group is a national referee and he said that they would never allow a tournament on greens like these and he actually walked off as they we’re making him angry. The course apart from that could have been a fun track if set up correctly But I we will never know I can’t see any of ever returning Apart from meeting up with old friends who by the way travelled a long way from all over the uk , was a complete waste of time and money Everyone left feeling disappointed and hoping next years get together will be better This was the worst trip in the 28 years we have been doing them

✓4 Sep 2024
Course in good condition with excellent greens (despite playing it in consistent rain!!). Only observation was that the Professional's Shop was closed so the buggy hire and all visitor arrangements had to be undertaken at reception where one person was dealing both with golfers and guests who were checking out. Lunch and drinks afterwards were served in pleasant area overlooking the course. We were mildly surprised how quiet the course was compared to Staverton Park.
Steve
✓2 Sep 2024
The course is not long but the greens are very tricky. Most holes cut on slopes and lots of stories about 3 or even 4 putting. They obviously had a problem with grass cutters as it looked like the semi rough hadn't been cut for about a month and then when cut lots of dead grass which meant it hard to find golf balls.

✓14 Aug 2024
A hard walk in 29c heat but a good layout, but greens although looking good we’re appallingly slow, only about 6 on the stimp so no chance of stroking the ball, it had to be hit hard when putting.

The Hellidon and lakes course was ok, the play was very slow on the Saturday taking 5hrs for the round. Sunday was better but the valley course seemed the forgotten course. The grass had been cut but the cuttings just left so anything off the fairway was lost which was frustrating. The pro shop is not great, had a couple and drinks but I would make sure you bring everything with you as you couldn’t rely on it having what you needed

The course was fantastic, but the experience isn’t great because they book tee times way too close together for the standard of golfer. You end up waiting for every shot and constantly crossing over which is such a shame because the actual golf course is in great condition. Be prepared for a round to take up to 6hours!!!
Kevin
✓31 May 2024
Appreciating the recent weather the amount of dead cut grass on the ground was hard to accept and delayed our round constantly trying to find a ball which had rolled under dead grass that should have been collected when cut. Maybe a temporary machine technical issue I don’t know.
Robert
✓20 May 2024

Sarah
✓17 May 2024
The course has suffered big time with the rain. Buggies had not been used for months. On the 15th we were told that buggies were not available due to health and safety. However situation was not helped by guests having seen a couple of buggies on the course… issued by mistake by a member of staff. The real reason was that the Golf Pro was not at work, no-one was available to check the buggy batteries so people had to hire push trollies or carry. The General Manager was in the Shop on the 16th. Even with better weather there were many wet areas.. we were able to hire a buggy on 16th and got it stuck .. the greenstaff obviously struggled to have a cutting regime as there were large amounts of ‘farmer fields’ rough. The greens were difficult as they are rarely on the level and therefore were a positive contradiction to the standard of the courses. Such a shame.. don’t think we would recommend the venue for golf.

✓9 Oct 2023
course needed some attention and care. fairways and baths not great, greens poor with nobody repairing pitch marks. Seem to be capitalising on the weekend golfing groups of all capabilities, which considerably slowed play down and hacked up the course, which probably explained the condition of the greens. Not enough signage/bells on Blind fairways. Really needs a course marshall to speed play up and manage the course, with groups slipping into any of the 9 hole courses between those playing 18. Any enjoyable weekend all the same, but wouldn't rush back to this venue/course

Condition of course very poor. Fairways clearly had not been known for a while and then mowed with huge clumps of grass everywhere. Old rotting leaves everywhere. ✓19 Jun 2023
The championship course was challenging and the views of the surrounding countryside were beautiful and by the end of the round we realised why so many people used buggies( so many different gradients) A lot of the greens needed repairing and the tee boxes were a bit tired. Not enough bins or ball cleaners and not enough warnings that some holes were blind and for players on the tee to wait for a bell to say it’s clear to play. Substandard pro shop and facilities, no welcome or interest shown when we booked in. Not one to be recommended sadly nor will we be returning.

✓4 Oct 2022
After reading some other reviews, I feel we must have timed out visit just right. The greens were superb. Some very challenging pin positions which added further to the difficulty of such quality and fast greens. We played the Hellidon and Lakes courses which were very good. Longer hitters will find this not so challenging but the speed of the greens means the approach shot needs to be good. No mention of the practice range on the website but they have one and it's proper grass to play off, not rubber mats. This is great, but £4 for approx 25 balls is ridiculous. Minor niggles but the courses are really well maintained and are a good challenge with some amazing views.

✓20 Sep 2022
Overall a decent course with lots of risk/reward holes. A few negatives, you have no choice of which of the 9’s you get to play, the valley course is the most basic and quietest. On the second day we started on the valley course but then had to wait an hour for our tee time on the Hellidon Course. Other things that could be improved, no driving range balls available so we had to go and collect our own. A drinks cart with refreshments would be a great idea. Pro shop is basic to say the least. Hotel is understaffed and the line for the bar was constantly long.

The round on Friday was at fine pace. Saturday was a joke, never experienced anything like it. The group in front of us held up at least 5 groups behind us. Almost 2 and three quarter hours to play 9 holes and we walked off. The pro shop said that it was “about the right pace for a resort course”, which we all disagreed with, especially as the slow group were in a Comp!!! 15 minutes looking for lost balls, should have been thrown off. Very annoying. In general, the course was in great condition given the recent weather.

Very interesting course where pulling out driver on every par 4/5 was not required. A few holes which our group said they played completely different on day 2 compared to day 1. The greens were average but a lot better than expected having read reviews online. A lack of practice facilities wasn't ideal however I believe a driving range is being set up which is good. Very slow round however which is probably not helped by 2 drivable par 4s in the first 4 holes. Both rounds took close to 5 hours. The final hole is really good fun.

✓10 May 2022
A tricky course but there are opportunities if you manage your shot selection & hit the spot you aim for, very punishing if you go off line. It is very uphill & down dale, so if you have any sort of mobility problems you will need a buggy, we walked it & it was absolutely knackering. All the holes are interesting, & some are spectacular, & a lot of bells to ring, reminded me very much of playing in Spain. The course was very busy, lots of large groups, but most were polite & let us play through as a two-ball. took us 3hrs 45mins on the Saturday, & just over 3hrs on the Sunday although we did play through 21 players! Only disappointment was the 'yellow' course not being in good nick so we had the play the Red / Blue twice. There is a nice halfway house, bar / bbq area which provides welcome refreshment

3 sets of nine combined to make 2 rounds of 18. The 9 called "The Valley" was in very poor condition, particularly the greens but the tees weren't great either. However the other two nines ("The Hellidon" and "The Lakes") were excellent. Really good quality greens, creative and interesting holes, a really pleasant course. The course played well, the greens were fluffy in places with a few weeds in a few parts unfortunately, but other than that was in good condition

Generally the course was ok but some of the greens were in poor condition. Fairway grass too long in places. Challenging course but enjoyable. Not enough signage to indicate route.

Course was in good condition but did have a few mats for tees which was a little surprising at the time of year we travelled. The course is very playable and favours the longer hitters.

The 3 courses are not long but certainly make you think your way around. A couple more weeks of sunshine & growth it will be in top shape. A great 1 night DBB 2 Rounds package.

The course was in very good condition considering the amount of rain there was leading up to the weekend. The greens were generally good. We played all three of the 9 hole courses and enjoyed Lakes & Valley the most. We would definitely come here again and I would recommend it to friends and family.

Really nice flowing course. Good for people for shape the ball from right to left. The greens are a challenge but on some holes they could do with some extra attention.

Course condition was poor with a lot of bare areas on the Fairways and portions of damaged greens. This may have been as a result of the dry summer. The actual course set up considering its short length is quite challenging and the driver is best left in the bag for most holes. The greens are definitely this courses defence mechanism with a lot of slopes and borrows to contend with but overall our group had reasonable scores and matches were tight.
