Le Golf National

8.6
Very Good See all 61 reviews

Propelled into the spotlight by Europe’s awesome Ryder Cup victory in 2018, Le Golf National has cemented itself as a must-play European golf course. The club has two spectacular courses to play, the Albatros and the Aigle, the latter of which makes for a memorable round of golf in its own right.

However, after the world watched ‘Moliwood’ put on a historic performance upon its fairways, the Albatros has become the most popular course in France.

Thanks to its great location on the outskirts of Paris, just 6 miles from Versailles, Le Golf National is within easy reach of golfers traveling from the UK, choose from the Eurostar, a drive via the Eurotunnel or a flight into Orly or Charles-de-Gaulle Airports. Golfers are also spoilt for choice with accommodation, with a number of excellent hotels available, including the on-site Novotel Saint Quentin en Yvelines.

NOTE: Visitors to Le Golf National will be able to tee up on the newly redesigned Albatros course in September 2026.

Golf Courses at Le Golf National

Albatros Course

The Albatros is Le Golf National's centerpiece, and is the annual host to the French Open. Ranked 4th in France and 9th in continental Europe, Albatros was designed by Hubert Chesneau with Robert Von Hagge’s consultancy and has hints of Florida, a splash of Ireland and a lot of France. The stadium course has been built in accordance with the most modern construction principles and joined the list of courses to have staged a Ryder Cup in 2018.

This is the toughest golf course around Paris, where the enormous, undulating putting surfaces are sculpted around great swathes of water and sand. The distinctly rugged feel of Albatros reminds you that this is a proper golf course, not a walk-in-the-park resort track, and is there to test even the best.

The Albatros Course at Le Golf National is ranked as one of the best courses in France

What the pros say:

“It’s a very dramatic and therefore a great course for The Ryder Cup. Especially the last few holes where everything will be decided. The 13th, with the water, then a par five which you can reach in two, then the last few holes are really breathtaking. On 15 and 16 you have water, 17 being a long par four and 18 water again so a lot of things can happen on the closing holes. It’s going to be quite thrilling.” – Jose Maria Olazabal

“I think Le Golf National is a fantastic Ryder Cup venue for many reasons. Firstly, I can think of worse places in the world to stay in than Versailles, the Trianon Palace and the great hospitality and great food that we enjoy here. But on the golf course, the last four or five holes, in the natural amphitheatre that this golf course creates, I can only imagine how good the buzz will be coming down 15 and 16. They are about as good and dramatic a risk-reward par three and four you'll get. Then the 17th is a great par four and for matches that do come down the last, there's not going to be a better par four on The European Tour than the last at Le Golf National. I can really picture 40, 50, 60,000 people up on those slopes around that little cauldron of the last four holes, and I think the atmosphere will be amazing.” – Graeme McDowell

Aigle Course

The resort's second course is Aigle, which is certainly a more forgiving proposition than the neighbouring French Open venue. The Aigle is shorter, at 6,489 yards, and is more sympathetically set up to welcome the average player. In the same manner as the Albatros, the course is rough around the edges, and has a degree of links in its make up, but does not have the demanding hazards that make Le Golf National's main attraction so challenging.

Imperative to keep your ball on the short grass, as you'll lose balls you see land and still not be able to find them. I loved the test, albeit it being a hard one.

Great course, great conditions, very hard and you must keep your ball in play as you’ll never find it in the rough even if you know exactly where your ball went in.

The weather didn’t help as it rained constantly, the rough is long weed filled and deep but the course is in excellent condition. The thing that ruined our round was the fact that we were promised buggies by your golf travels and upon arrival we where told that this isn’t possible and hasn’t been for weeks or won’t be for weeks to come regardless of the weather. We then had no choice given to us but play the albatross course with members of our group struggling to walk the course. The only choice was to play the eagle course on our second round because of the buggies and at no time offered a discount or even the buggies as a gesture.

As expected a difficult course, even for the better golfers, so no complaints there. However, the greens were very poor, and the general condition once off the fairways was also not great. In general, it was untidy and is clearly suffering for being prepared for the Olympics at the expense of the ordinary customer.

An iconic course that was perhaps a little below our expectations. The Aigle course layout was very average with most being not much better than holes carved out of a field. The rating above is a review of the two courses together.

We expected this course to be difficult and it was. Some of our group are high handicappers and they found it too hard for them. We will look for less challenging courses for future events. Our lower handicap players did enjoy the course and would have welcomed another round on the Albatross if we had time.

We played this course twice during our trip. The Thursday round was a lot quicker that the Saturday round. We thought that the greens were not looked after as well as the Albatross greens. The range of refreshments available from the refreshments cart was very poor.

What a wonderful experience to play this magnificent course - really lived up to the expectation & looking back at the Ryder cup photos brought it to life. But beware its long (even off the yellows) & the rough is very penal - stray off the fairway and you could well be dropping a new ball! Greens a little slower than expected & bunkers tough - a good test!

Fabulous course, helped by possibly the best welcome I have ever received at a golf club, many other clubs could learn a lesson. Course was in superb condition but not for the new golfer. Practice areas were good with the best greens ever on the putting area. Well worth the trip. If you are travelling from the North take the route avoiding South Paris .

Excellent but extremely tough course, which is what we had been expecting. Many holes are visually spectacular but if you’re not 100% on top of your game, it will eat your lunch! There are large areas of water to carry on many holes and the greens are fast and undulating. A great experience and makes you want to come back to try to master it. The holes are well separated and you go several holes without seeing another golfer. Great challenge!

It’s fairly obvious that the resort is all about the main championship course, the Albatros. It feels like they shoe-horned the Aigle Course into a small piece of land just to get a second 18 holes. It’s very tight, not very interesting or memorable and many holes run closely parallel with each other only separated by some clumps of bushes, so there was quite an opportunity to have balls flying onto other fairways with lots of shots of ‘fore’ going on! The condition of the teeing areas wasn’t great but the rest of the course es reasonable for this time of year. We probably wouldn’t play this course again.

Where do i start! From the minute you walk down the hill to the first tee to when you walk up the hill to the clubhouse at the end, this is a must for any Golfer!!! Its brutal, but its a challenge anyone should accept and give a go. The course plays with your mind form the off as Visually there is so much to process, then you have to hit a fairway and keep it in play! Rough is brutal and a card killer. Loved the course, loved the challenge and will be going back 100% (unfinished business at 16,17 and 18) Staff and complex were amazing, worth the money for sure.

Great course. Fun and challenging throughout. The overall conditions of the course was exactly what I was expecting. The on site facilities were nice but the main reason of a two star rating was that the restaurant at the clubhouse closed at an extremely early hour. We started our round at 12:20 and didn't play slow at all. Upon our finish of the round we found out that the restaurant was closed for the day already. We like to sit back with some food and drinks and discuss the days' round.
