Luton Hoo Golf Club

Located on the border of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, Luton Hoo’s 7,107 yard Championship golf course, has recently hosted Jamega Tour, EuroPro Tour and European Challenge Tour events.

Golf has been part of Luton Hoo’s history since the turn of the century, with the estate’s original Victorian 9 hole course.

Course designer Mike Smith created the 7,107 yard championship golf course while sympathetically abiding by the lands listed heritage. Golf at Luton Hoo offers a stern test to all levels of golfer, the subtle undulations in the USGA specification greens fit gracefully into the contrasting front and back nines. The front nine offers a unique inland links feel and the back nine meanders through the estates original parkland.

Golf at Luton Hoo offers some picturesque, if not testing tee shots, featuring 6 holes with water hazards. The course offers a formidable test of course management to the accomplished golfer, while remaining an enjoyable challenge for the less experienced player.

Great hotel in terms of location, facilities, staff etc. Most of the stay is fulfilled in and around the leisure area of the hotel but golfers get use of nice rooms, the spa, the 19th hole restaurant and the brasserie for evening meal. Breakfast and a later bar are both served in the Mansion house (5 min walk or their shuttle car can be called). Food was amazing (especially breakfast) although drinks are a bit pricey but it is a 5* facility so that comes with the territory. Very nice overall.

Room was good, located a drive away from the main hotel (where the restaurant / bay was), ordinarily would have been fine as there is a bar in the spa/golf complex, but for some reason that wasn’t open. So was a shuttle car between 2 locations, ok, just a bit of a pain. Main hotel bar was not great, massive lounge area in big manor house - no atmosphere, limited beer selection. Food was good, especially breakfast. Hotel staff felt a bit x disorganized, checked in, got to room (again a car ride away from reception), was a double instead of twin, phone didn’t work in room, one in the lobby did but no one answered so had to drive back to reception. They sorted the room no problem, just a bit of a pain..so overall some good, some bad, not enough to bring me back

Very good experience in the hotel and golf/spa area. Staff were excellent and very helpful. A minor grumble that if, like my group, you're staying in the spa area you have to go all the way to the main hotel to check-in. Not a dealbreaker, but annoying.

First the positives: lovely hotel and grounds, our twin room was large and comfortable. However, the service and food was very poor. At dinner, my main course of burger and fries was close to inedible, and the creme brulee dessert consisted of a far too thick topping of burnt sugar and mushy cream, which again I couldn't eat. After dinner we ordered 4 drinks at the bar, when we were told staff were way too busy to take our order. After 30 mins of waiting we were finally served. At breakfast the full English was tasteless, however there were good fruit and cereal options. We asked for tea and coffees with our food but were told there was a backlog (the room was half full) and they never arrived. Overall we had a poor impression of the kitchen and service. We have visited many similar standard hotels for golf weekends and Luton Hoo is by far the worst for food and service. Certainly not of a 4 star standard.

We stayed in the Country Club and it was a lovely location with everything within walking distance. It was a great surprise to find an EV charging point to fill up whilst I stayed. We did have to head across to the main house to check-in and out which was a little annoying. It would be great to allow people to do this within the country club easily. The staff were great and the food at Adams Brasserie was fantastic for our evening meal. There was some confusion with the final payment and IT systems not being linked from the Country Club to the Main house and this caused some frustration at check out and it clouded the start of our second round, however it was resolved before we left and we were able to get on our way. Overall the rooms were large comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay.

Luton Hoo is a beautiful hotel but if you stay in the newer outbuilding it’s the equivalent of being in a travel lodge . While the main hotel is impressive and charming there is a sense that golfers are being put out of the main building and charged a fortune . The food was abysmal and whilst the hotel staff upgraded both people and tried their absolute best , including refunding their chicken sandwiches ( a rudimentary toddler sandwich with some damp rocket and a few crisps ) and then also refunded their dinner cost , after they decided to go for a local curry instead of risking the brasserie for dinner … all in all the experience wasn’t really something amazing. The spa was lovely .

Beautiful Hotel and golf course and a great package deal with your golf travel! Rooms were fabulous and the food in Adam Brasserie was amazing! Spa area and facilities were a little disappointing. Whole area could do with some modernising. Drinks prices are ridiculous so beware! 4 coffees and 2 bacon rolls (literally bread & bacon wrapped up in foil) cost me £33!!! Would definitely use this site though to book other package deals 👍🏼

Accommodation was great, as was the food and service. Very covid aware so no worries there. A couple of things that you may not be aware of, heavily inflated prices ie. £22.77 for two gin and tonics and £7 for a bottle of peroni is not really acceptable. The 19th bar was not open at all today. So we were not able to grab any refreshments before or after golf. Payment was by card only. No cash. Would have been good to know this beforehand.

Our large and comfortable room was not in the old historic manor house but was adjacent to the restaurant and Spa. Dinner was good in parts but a medium rare steak was well done, they did offer to replace after we complained but by then too late

On the whole, everything was wonderful. The food was good, the staff generally pleasant, (but not all of them) and the room was large and comfortable. The bathroom was a little run down, I don’t expect mould in the shower of a 5* establishment, and the taps were loose. The tea and coffee facilities were sparse. We were given a number to call for milk but no one answered the number. We were a party of 16. I suggested we meet mid morning for brunch before playing. The only appropriate food available was either a bacon or a sausage bap, not even a veggie option. Very little choice. After our round the next day we wanted to meet up for drinks and prizegiving but the bar was closed. At the brasserie the sandwiches were minuscule and cost £12! All food and drinks were prohibitively expensive, so much so that no one stayed for a drink after dinner. One round that was bought was 3 gin and tonics and a Diet Coke for which we were charged £50! Absurd.

We had to check in at the main house but our rooms were in a building behind the stable block. V nice rooms, but parking an issue. We went to the brasserie in the stable block for dinner, but as a golfing group were directed to a "back room" for dinner so felt we were in the annex of the annex. Never got more than a sniff of the main building, which of course is heavily used in all promotions.

A nice test of golf and whilst no bunkers, there is enough rough and water to keep you straight and accurate. Helpful “next tee” markers as it wouldn’t always be obvious to non-regulars. Only issue was some green maintenance on our second round which made a few greens pretty unplayable. It was a timing thing as later in the day it would have been less of an issue. Wouldn’t stop me going back.

The course has enough to challenge the low to mid handicapper in my opinion. The front 9 has plenty of water hazards and interesting dog legs. The back nine is more parkland where the trees give you testing shots depending on where you drive to and shots to the green. Overall a very well kept course, wonderful experience!

Overall enjoyable, pace of play was a real plus.. second day rented a buggy, which was needed given quite large walks between tees. Greens ran true but weren’t in the best condition (is early in the season, but they were quite slow and had areas that didn’t have much grass on them). Fairways were good, layout was good, a couple of strange holes eg a 230 par 3 that was a real ‘nothing’ hole. Overall was enjoyable, just not a great course

Very helpful man in the pro shop fitted us in although they had no record of us as YGT had not sent the booking through to their correct email address. He also checked that our rooms were available to alleviate our stress. The course was in good condition despite the lack of rain this summer, the greens ran well. We really enjoyed our two rounds. The only comment I have is the lack of bunkers - I guess that's a design decision but it seems unusual. We would love to play at Luton Hoo again but wouldn't book a weekend with our usual group, due to the poor service and food options.

Overall the course was very good. Excellent for golf trips and players of all abilities. The fairways are pretty generous and as there are no bunkers players generally save shots and the scoring was better than our home course. General course conditions were good given that all courses are very dry and brown due to the lack of rain. The greens played really well and very true. Some greens suffered from many holes due to birds digging for worms etc but generally didn't impede the ball running.

Andrew

Only course I've ever played without a single bunker, which was odd. Due to the drought, the course (fairways/tee boxes etc) was clearly not looking at it's best. The greens, although watered and looking "green" had also suffered with several needing some work done on them. That said, they were true and pretty quick. The course was hard to play given the dryness so was difficult holding the ball on the fairways etc. Quite a few blind shots to play, and given that you couldn't stop the ball from running and running, nor judge the bounce you would get, you had no idea where your ball was going to finish or indeed if you would find it.

The setting for this golf course is fantastic however, the greens were where it failed. The staff confirmed that they have trouble with drainage and it was telling. Throughout both rounds the greens were bobbly, inconsistent and patchy. Some had no drainage and had standing water and some were dry as a bone and fast. It feels as though this is a hangover from when they were first put in and the staff seem to have their hands tied with what they are able to do, other than dig them all up and start again! The lack of bunkers made the course very open and the rough was short at this time of year making wayward tee shots very easy to find. Some the fairways were lush and well drained whilst others were shabby, dry and cracked. Overall we had a great time with the company and people and the overall setting is stunning. The word I would use is inconsistent and the availability of a bowl of chips and snacks at the 19th was lacking.

The course was in average condition given the weather we’ve had, which has helped all our home courses to be in top condition. The fairways a bit scrubby, tee boxes (ladies) very scrubby and the greens ok but a lot of bare patches on the aprons. This was not helped on our 2nd round by a lot of the greens having been tined. They were in such bad condition. 3 of the greens were closed with temporary greens placed on the front apron. Even the green that we had our ‘nearest the pin’ on was a temporary green and we were not forewarned about any of this work. A heads up would have been nice. There was no pro shop and everything was done via a kiosk. Not very 5* at all. All very disappointing.
