St. Pierre's Old Course is one of the best parkland layouts in the country, and is a recognised tournament host, having welcomed the top LPGA professionals for the Solheim Cup in 1996. The course has now matured nicely into a genuine challenge for even the best golfers, with some particularly memorable holes.
A round on the old reaches a crescendo with the superb closing two, where visitors must negotiate the 17th green, almost surrounded by an expansive water hazard, and the final hole's difficult elevated green.

The neighbouring Mathern Course, although considerably shorter than the Old, is an extremely enjoyable layout. It is parkland in style, but players must also tackle the mature trees that provide obstacles on many holes. Opened in 1975, the Mathern continues to delight visitors with some very good golf, and even better views of the surrounding Monmouthshire countryside.
If you fancy a flutter, the race course at Chepstow has regular meetings, and is within a short drive of the resort.

It hasn’t changed much in 25 years! Needs an investment to upgrade it what it was. Golf menu is poor but a la carte is fine. Staff are helpful generally but the bar was having an electronic breakdown!

Horrendous Experience, Plus points… Leisure Facilities pretty good, nice courtyard room, however … Awful food, extremely rowdy, groups of men chanting singing in the restaurant…. Only Sunday Carvery available which was poor at best, staff look like they’ve given up. Into the bar later for more carnage… blokes swearing being extremely loud, which descended into that group throwing pound coins that the wall to see whom could get the closest…… bit like being at nursery school …. Dinner service slow, ate our desserts whilst our main course plates were still on the table…. Ages to wait for a drinks order too…Young chap in pro shop also disinterested (on the Sunday)… Never ever again

Hotel is set beautifully and looks historic. Found the facilities especially for the room lacking. No heating as the heating system wasn't on. Had nowhere to dry off my golf gear after a day on the course in the rain and was playing the next day. Bathroom had no heated towel rail either. Yet another member of my party on the same block had a radiator thatbwas powered by electricity and a towel rail. I visited reception to ask about heating etc they didn't really have an answer. Offered to change my room but by this time all my golf equipment was hanging up in the room and all the clubs were also individually placed in the room. My room had an enjoining door locked that led to another room where at 6 am I could hear those people. The restaurant in the evening was very busy and the service was slow . There was also no gas so some items on the main menu were not available to eat. On day 2 of our round of Golf the clubhouse had set hours for things like bacon baps so after the round at 230 this wasn't available. The lunch menu was limited and didn't offer anything i wanted to eat.

Easy check in, clean rooms, comfortable beds, Food, excellent Breakfast choices from cereal, fruit, to a full English with unlimited choice of items. Set evening meal slightly limited and for me still the same set price as our visit in 2019, £25 pp and thus reduced volume and quality.

This was an enjoyable stay. The restaurant was lovely, golfing facilities very good and general ambience of the hotel enjoyable. The bar area however is small and can become overcrowded but fortunately the weather was good so you could sit outside. The rooms are a little dated but acceptable. Staff on the whole were good but we had to ask numerous times for the rooms to be cleaned and the bar manager was either overworked or just rude. Would recommend this for a short golf break. We went for two nights three days.

Very friendly and helpful staff, no complaints at all. The room was comfortable and clean with a small course view. As a party of 8 we all agreed it was a great venue. The food was good is a little pretentious - who wants cheese cake in a glass? Negatives, the cost of bar snacks and drink.

Rooms were clean & spacious, although the blast of hot air during the first night made it a little uncomfortable. Once rectified the second nights sleep was a lot better. Swimming pool was a good size along with the jacuzzi. Food at the hotel I thought was below standard, breakfast apart(which was very good). Same limited choices both nights, no burger or red meat option & no cheeseboard!! First night I had Fish & Chips - fish was quite tasty but the batter was very tough & thick. Second night Pork & Leek sausages served in what seemed like a cereal bowl, 2 sausages & a small serving of mash, not great! Drinks at the hotel were also very overpriced £7.25 for a pint of lager, I pay less in London!!

The Bar was incredibly busy and understaffed. Condiering the prices charged the least you would expect is adequate staffing. The dinner was self service and billed as a carvery, but there was no fresh meat being carved, although you wont go hungry the quality was poor. Several of our group had no hot water on the morning of our second day. I did manage to shower in the pool changing area , but not ideal. Overall not what I expect from a Marriott. We felt like they just wanted our money and customer safisfaction was a long way down the list.

Staff could not have been friendlier. Room was Ok, there was no fridge which would have been useful. Could not see how to change the aircon setting. Some rooms had water to drink, others didn't and my room was not cleaned after the first night. Some of our group were offered a drinks voucher, others were not which was odd. Food was variable. The Friday night menu seemed more substantial than the one on Thursday night. Biggest bugbear was the price of alcohol. I bought wine for the table and the least expensive wine was over £30 per bottle. At The Vale house reds and white were a lot less expensive. Other facilities were good, steam room and sauna excellent, pool was busy, but to be expected.

Overall good but some issues with good and drink. On the second day we had a choice of five mains one of which was a repeat from the previous night. Then one of the other choices was unavailable. First visit to St Pierre for a group of 12 golfers and it didn’t disappoint. We were worried that with all the rain things may not have gone ahead and it was going to be a wash out but luckily for us we found a break in the weather for our two day venture and a good time was had by all. The hotel had a great ambience about it, staff were exceptional, food was of a good standard and the bar areas inside and out were very spacious with lots of little “snug” areas where you could sit and chill as a group and have a laugh and chat about the day without disturbing others. The rooms were a decent size, well provisioned and comfortable. We were scheduled to play the Mathern course and the Old Course but the Mathern was lost to the weather so we had two rounds on the Old course. The course was understandably a bit wet underfoot in places due to the volume of rain that had fallen prior to our arrival but it did not detract from our enjoyment of the course. Quite a challenging course with some long and tricky tee shots. And the 18th is one of the hardest Par 3’s especially for us mere mortals but only enhanced our fun. All in all we as a group had no complaints about our trip and our experience was very positive….. we would go back so that in itself is a recommendation, Thankyou to St Pierre 👏👏

The hotel is a well maintained, quirky, old building, which is set in beautiful grounds. It has a small bar area, which can be noisy in the evening, but has a number of smaller rooms where guests who want to escape the noise, can sit, all of which have TVs, showing Sky Sports. The twin rooms are small but clean and have tea & coffee facilities. The twin beds are quite small. The evening meal choice was excellent and the food was very good. Breakfast was alsi excellent and the food was fresh, even though it's a buffet.

Hotel full, rather noisy. Golf course very slow. Couldn't check into hotel and get to restaurant in time for dinner booking. Repeated attempts to rearrange booking from course revealed nobody available to take phone calls either in reception or pro shop (4 to 4.30 in afternoon). Buffet evening meal and breakfast were good. Rooms in need of some attention. One shower not working, no tea bags, hairs in bath... Wake up call not received. Nevertheless had wonderful weather and enjoyed our stay. Wondering whether to go back or elsewhere next year.

Even though it was again very enjoyable was really disappointing t h at tee times were changed without being told so we nearly missed our tee off .luckily we were early. Nobody told us tee time for next day had x also changed luckily I asked. Also played same course twice which were not told till tee off. Booked meal for 8pm and it was changed to 6 with some discussion was put to 7pm . All seemed a little disorganised and rushed this year which was very sadly as was in memory of our dad who has played there with us the last few years

What a shambles, we were given a 2.50 tee time so by the time we came in every where was packed. We went for our evening meal only to discover it was a buffet, but there was no food all the meats on the menu were finished and the little veg that was left was cold. To top it off the bar had run out of beer, as a group of 12 it was difficult to find seats, by the time we did we were literally forced out of the bar by the men next to us because they wanted our seats. Our morning 10.30 tee time was cancelled but we were offered a 2.30 which for us was too late. So out of 10 I’d give it a 1.

The hotel has a unique charm and some beautiful old parts of the building. The food was very good, beautifully cooked and presented but both evenings there was a long wait between courses. The majority of the staff we met were personable, friendly and helpful. However I did not appreciate being woken up on our second morning asking what time I was checking out by the housekeeping staff. Still half asleep I said I didn’t know to be told ‘check out is not until 12’. At this point I closed the door to hear the member of staff, presumably to a colleague, say how rude I was. If the hotel need to have a timetable for room cleaning on day of check out I suggest they ask guests the day before. Finally the signage was not great getting to and from the car park and non existent from the hotel to spa and pool.

Rooms for golf breaks pretty basic obviously old and perhaps in need of updating but adequate. Couldn’t fault the staff service in restaurant was very slow first night and menu not great however gave us a free round of drinks very apologetic. Second night a totally different experience quick efficient and great menu so can understand the mixed reviews. Bar staff during day under pressure but coped with a smile . All staff were friendly and can’t do enough. Pool good size , adequate but also slightly tired area but was quiet . Was value for money. Staff are definitely 5 star . They should invest in better glasses for wine and put bread and oil on the table wouldn’t cost much but would help ones experience with some small quick fixes

A sandwich ordered at lunchtime would often take over an hour to arrive. There was never enough serving staff at the bar at lunchtime. As a group of 12 we were required to order our evening meal food choices early in the day. This process proved to be very random. The first 3 evenings we were there we sat down at 8pm. The service was slow and the wrong meal choices brought out. All requests to bring out jugs of water were ignored - we eventually helped ourselves to water. On the third night they had lost our preordered food sheet. It took 3 hours to serve us the three courses. On the plus side all the food was very good. On the last evening we ate at 6.30 in the evening - there were no issues.

The hotel looks great, and setting is fantastic, despite the Highways agency closing one of the bridges on Sunday! Staff were very obliging in both the hotel and pro shop, and very friendly. Breakfast buffet was very good, and dinner was good, although the table d’ hote menu was a little restricted. Rooms wer a good size, and Check in and check out was very efficient, and would have no hesitation in re-visiting.

Unfortunately the hotel is very tired and needs a lot of upgrading. We had a great time because i was there with friends but this was in spite of the hotel. At dinner there were 5 bottles of wines on the menu of which 3 of them were sold out. At the bar they had run out of all snacks. It was just like nobody was trying V hard. Its a beautiful building and the gym and swimming pool was great but they need to try a bit harder with the food and drinks.

Obvious that still recovering from COVID issues.Appeared to be lots of new untrained staff. Poor replenishment and leaning of bedroom on one occasion, did complain to reception who resolved issue following morning. Bar staff very young and lacked knowledge. Behind bar and below chiller fridges were very dirty. Prices were extortionately high. Seemed to be classed as second class citizens on Saturday evening when a wedding was on same day. Placed with rowdy golfers in another part of dining room. Asked to be reseated, manager was very accommodating and sat us in main dining room, and sent us a free bottle of wine as recompense. Hotel tired and in need of upgrade.

Following various discussions with Jordan at Your Golf Travel our group of 16 made our way to St Pierre for a golfing weekend and we were not disappointed. I popped of the weekend before our visit to ensure all was in place, which it was, and the reception staff managed to secure an individual dining room for us as we are a mixed group and not an all male society. The receptionist said she would try and sort something for us and called me later in the day tgo confirm that we indeed had our own dining room which was terrific. The waitresses were top class and really looked after us. The guys in the bar were right on it and although it was busy they really did well so very well done. The rooms were clean and comfortable although there was a lot of noise all night with people walking passed the room and slamming doors. However overall a very enjoyable stay and the weather was great which always helps.

First class food through out our stay. The bar could only offer one choice of rose wine which we found extremely poor. The golf was enjoyed especially the old course.

Check In at reception was good and efficient confirming the 2 rooms, for 2 couples, and booking for dinner on both nights of our stay. We had requested 2 Lakeside rooms with balconies but one of them had been "upgraded" to a Courtyard Suite. My wife and I were given a key to a Lakeside room, on entry we found cobwebs on both the outside and inside of the large windows overlooking the lake and the room did not have a balcony. After contacting reception, we were given the type of room booked which was cleaner and comfortable but the bathroom was in need of decoration. Our friends Suite, which we believed to be an upgrade based on room rates, was small, tired, noisy and in real need of a complete refresh. The settee and chairs in the lounge area were also worn and stained. The quality of service in the main restaurant was acceptable but extremely poor in the outside bar, food was acceptable but quality of beers and lagers varied from poor to undrinkable.

The hotel was very busy over the weekend so I ended up in one of the lakeside lodges. This wa a 3 min walk away from the main hotel the room was fine and the bed was comfortable. The hotel put our group in a function room and provided a large screen to watch the Euro cup final. The staff were great we were well looked after. The staff working in the bar area in the afternoon weren’t as efficient and many of our food & drinks orders came late and or wrong. All in all the hotel was ok. I’d come again.

Many areas of the hotel are quite tired and dated. The Mathern course the easier of the two courses despite the severe dry weather had more grass than the Old Course as well as some very dry fairways parts. Greens again in good condition due to good watering. No marshaling and a mix up with starting.
Bob
✓30 Aug 2025
Unfortunately due to the past months lack of rain the fairways were very dry and hard and no control of the ball bounce or run off on such hard ground and no grass. The greens in good condition due to good watering. Good marshalling at the start and course advice.
Nick

Nick
✓21 Aug 2025
All the greens were very good, the fairways were very dry but we have had no rain so will forgive, the fifth fairway was probably the worst with ball rolling to bottom of ravine and then down the path. Not sure if longer grass certainly at the bottom of ravine would help

The overall condition of the course was not as good as I had expected. The lack of rain was probably the cause of this. The greens were bumpy and the tees were in poor condition.
Richard
✓6 May 2025
Difficult to gauge as it was 1st visit. Greens:slow due to flowering grass. Fairway:longer than I would have expected, lack of definition between fairway and 1st cut of rough. Tees:OK, bit bare in places. Spoke to another group, it was their 5th time at St Pierre (old) ," by far the worst its been, terrible" Like the hotel, showing signs of under investment, not as polished as expected for a former tour event venue.

Oh dear. Previously we had played the championship course twice but were persuaded that this was now a good alternative. The layout, length and setting were good and the greens were better than on the championship course. But the bunkers were full of weeds, dandelions and daisies everywhere, no stakes to mark penalty areas and clearly neglected compared to the Old Course. This should not be thought of as comparable to the main course. I though £40 for a buggy was a bit steep and for that price I would have hoped they would at least have brushed all the previous days mess out, and removed all the sweet wrappers.

AS a party of 8 seniors, lacking length off the tee, we all found this a bit tough especially as the greens were disappointingly slow, and I mean very slow. Lovely setting though with horse chestnuts in bloom, sunny weather helped as well.

✓1 Apr 2025
Ignorant Staff in Pro Shop with a take it or leave it attitude. Members of the party were blue badge holders and cudnt use buggies as it had been “risk assessed”. Ask for a copy of assessment and not forthcoming despite conduits being perfect. Mysteriously buggies then suddenly appeared on Monday same conditions. Absolute farce but meant some of the party could just about manage 9 holes Sunday.

Great test of golf. From the mammoth par 5 1st hole right through to the mammoth par 3 18th. This course puts the Mathern course to shame with its layout, condition of fairways & excellent greens. A pleasure to play!

Not a fan of the course, when you lose balls on fairways & on the edge of the rough due to the amount of leaves lying about it’s very frustrating. Didn’t see a greenkeeper on there all weekend!

Pace was a little slow due toa large group of four-ba;ls ahead of our group, but wasn't so low that it became a problem. The Mathern differs from the Championship Course, lower-lying and more, much more, water. Damp in parts, but it is October, so no real complaints. Playing the two differing courses provided a change and we were really pleased with the Mathern, too.
Chris
✓7 Oct 2024
lovely course, shame the weather meant we couldn't enjoy the views from the higher points on the course, but can't say that detracted from the course itself. Fairways and greens in good condition, not much sand in the bunkers, but nothing else negative.
Tim
✓1 Oct 2024
The Course was in better condition and we were out early so we had no hold ups. A much better day. The course played long due to the recent rain, which is just one of those thing we accept. If your going only play the old couse as the Mathern is worth playing until they spend some time and money on it.
Tim
✓1 Oct 2024
The conditions were partly due to the recent rain, but the course lacks TLC. The Tee boxes were in a digusting state. There was a large group of 50 who turned up late on the tee and blocked the cousre. We waited on evershot on every hole with no sign of a marshall! very poor

The tee’s were like the fairways, I no it had rain all night but it was so wet, fairways hadn’t been cut for a while the greens were ok a bit bobbly, out of the 30 off us that played it most didn’t like it and found it to hard lots of ditches to get over. But I loved it and scored 40 points.

Not maintained as well as the main course which was also not the best condition. Tees are desperately requiring work, bunkers were poor and greens were very slow, repairs required but not marked as gur. Overall disappointing with the condition of this course was the general view of the group
Scott

Greens are slow. Course overall could be maintained better, lacks attention, wear and tear not repaired, tees were in bad condition, looks like they move them and don’t top dress them with the grass overgrown. Not kept in the same condition as the Old Course. Very few distance markers. Most of us would have bought a course guide, but at £8 per course, this was poor value for money. As was the ball markers. At £4 each, that would have been £64 for our group, so we didn't buy any.

Due to the wet weather the course had only just reopened. Bunkers were all out of play and there were 4 tempory greens which were very poor. The course was fine but it was a bit slow because they had a competition on l only played 9 holes because I was told it was fairly flat but it is not there are a lot of steep up and down slopes so not happy with that because I couldn’t get a buggy because they had booked all the buggies out to one corporation and told me l could not have one even though I told them i would struggle the annoying thing about that was when I left to go home at 2 40 pm there were at least 10 buggies with no one taken them so not happy because I didn’t finish the course and no one was prepared to check they said these people pay a lot of money and they didn’t want to upset them so I didn’t pay a lot of money for my stay is that what they are saying not happy with that so can you tell them or let me know what I should do next thanks Al

Lovely course , some great holes, was extremely busy due to people ( like us) being squeezed on due to wetness of the other course. By 13 it was a ten minute wait on the tee box, so walked in! We’re very kindly told we could play the back nine on the Friday morning early, but it was raining again so didn’t bother. Greens were very slow and in need of a cut , which was surprising as they were firm and the wet greens on the other course were perfect apart from the wet .
Simon
✓4 May 2024
We arrived on the Wednesday but were told the course was two wet to play , and we’re squeezed onto the old course which was very busy, I’ll describe it next We played this course the following day . In my opinion the course should have remained closed, we were told there were 3 temp greens, so that was not the issue, the ground was like a bog in places, I understand that as there was further rain overnight, I think we should have been made aware of this before departure, and given an option to postpone our trip. I would say this though… I’m sure when the courses is dry and firm that it is a very nice parkland course, the greens although wet , you could see would be superb .

We were fortunate to play the Old Course twice as the Maythern was closed due to rain. We were welcomed by a friendly starter to give us some top tips on the opening hole. The course has a number of interesting holes and being 6500 off the yellows provide a good challenge to any mid handicap golfer without being too hard. Back 9 are more interesting than front with a few holes where water places a part. Some of the greens had recently been hollow tinned so a bit bumpy but overall they wer fine. Half way hut could be a tad improved and I'd remove the powdered cup a soup for an authenticate one perhaps. or even better a barista coffee. Speed of play was fine although i can imagine this could get slow depending on the societies playing.

It was noticeable that the course has taken a beating during the recent wet weather but the green keepers are hard at work trying to bring it back. Grass Tees are grubby and our weekend was the first time they were back on. Inconsistent greens. Very friendly Pro shop staff. ✓7 Apr 2024
Due to all the excess rain prior to our visit the Conditions made the course play very long. The course was really interesting and had some tricky tee shots and I can envisage these to get harder when things dry out and the trees gain more foliage. Understandably the greens were not in tip top condition and some were very spongy and soft underfoot but this did not detract from our experience. Starter was very friendly, halfway hut was most welcome but a little short of options, pro shop was well stocked, signage around the course was good, variety of holes good, my score, Not so good 😂😂 …… Would recommend giving it a try and we all said we’d return to give it another go

Loved this course, it's long but a great challenge. Some lovely views (5th green in particular!). It was wet but held up really well, greens fantastic. Definitely want to come back and play again as had 2 very enjoyable rounds on the course. We should have played the Mathern course but this was closed so they were able to squeeze us onto the old course on day 2. Round took 5hrs (no buggies) as it was busy but that was fine for us ladies! Allow extra time for your warm up as the practice green, short game area and driving range are a short walk between each other.

We arrived on 21/10 morning and were told that their golf course is close due to severe rain fall over the last few days. Fortunately we are able to tee off the next morning but condition still poor, fairway was soggy and fairway green grass was not trimmed properly. Luckily most of the putting green was in excellent condition and we were able to enjoy our golf game there. By the way, we would like claim our unplayed first day green fees for 3 of us. Only four out of the six buggies could be provided on the Wednesday, however the staff went out of their way to try and get more and were able to provide two tee times for us on the Mathern that day. The Buggies were the most expensive during the week with no ball/club cleaners or course display screen. That said it is a lovely Course and we all enjoyed playing it twice and six of us three times. The course layout is fantastic, the holes are unique, lined with well matured trees . The par 3s are very challenging, the fairway bunkers well placed and fair . The only downside was the quality of the greens , recently treated , top dressed so playable but not in context with the quality of the course . We were aware however that we were playing in late September and a golfer on our trip told us that the greens had been excellent when he played earlier in the year . We played pick clean and place on the second day as there are so many bare patches around the trees . The staff at the starters hut were excellent. The pro shop had lots of St. Pierre branded clothing but mostly small . I wanted some large sizes to commemorate my captains away trip but there was nothing suitable .

Played this twice much nicer layout out with some great holes adding to the overall experience.

Personally didn’t like the layout of the course. Didn’t like the way all tees seemed to be crammed in so near to each other . Quite boring and inspiring. However Mervyn the starter and Marshall was exceptionally helpful during the whole of the stay and is a credit to the Club

This is a lovely course with some terrific views on the higher holes. The greens are much better on this course than the Mathern. It’s was slow as we were behind some older guys who seem to be arguing all the way round and we could see a backlog on the T’s behind us. Great day out golfing. Oh I hope the queues didn’t think it was our group causing the holdup as that isn’t the case.
Geoff
✓16 Sep 2022
It’s a lovely course but it took a few holes to get a feel for the greens as they feel soft under foot. It’s was busy so a little slow but we weren’t in any rush so it’s what to expect at these type of breaks.
Tim
✓12 Sep 2022
The course was in an acceptable condition and made for a pleasant 18 holes. As with the old course there were no drinking fountains.
Tim
✓12 Sep 2022
The drought had impacted the fairways and there were a number of areas which were bare. The greens had some work done on them and had a lot of small ridges on them. Putting was difficult but they did improve over the few days we stayed. The course is rated as hard due to a number of very large trees that guard some of the greens. The semi rough around the greens is very wiry and difficult to chip from. While there is a halfway hut there were no water fountains on the course.

Hard is possibly harsh, as the score range was 26 to 34pts, so challenging a better description. It is a really good course, with a good flow, and some fantastic holes, with great views, and the whole group liked it. Greens were in great condition, and no complaints. Would love to play it again
Steve
✓29 Jun 2022
It’s not a long course, but very tight, but appears over-played, with tees and fairways a bit shabby, not helped by players apparently not replacing divots. The greens were inconsistent and generally quite slow, but a few were quicker. The course layout gets tighter as you progress, and it had no real flow to it. We got round in around 3 hours remind, which for a 3 ball was bearable
Guy

Maybe short in yardage but quite tight in parts. Slightly quirky in its route layout but it was very enjoyable. Long par 3 to finish is slightly unusual but it works.

I can't in all honesty give a fair judgement on the course because of the time of year. Winter golf in the UK is all about being pragmatic, it is what it is and you are at the behest of the climate. We in our society group were fairly lucky over the weekend, it was breezy on day one but dry(ish)and day two was 90% dry apart from a quick squally downpour for 10mins. The greens had been drilled and fed so we had sandy bounces and sally Gunnel rolls on most putts..but again it's March so cudos to the course staff for maintaing a playing surface.
Kerry
✓15 Mar 2022
Very slow round 4.5hrs for a 2 ball. Some wet areas but drainage better than the other course. Winter maintenance was taking place as the greens had been scarified and had a coating of sand on. When we arrived asked to go to the pro shop to discuss rounds but was closed (4.30pm). We were asked to carry our bags as trolleys not allowed on the Saturday on the Mather’s COurse but some people were using trolleys.
Kerry
✓15 Mar 2022
Hard to comment as the course was very wet and most of the fairways were very wet. The greens looked like they needed a bit of attention and almost every pin hole was full of water. The weather was kind of us but the course needs some dry days!

✓12 Oct 2021
The greens weren't in great condition and in particular the bunkers had compacted sand/soil, not great. The course holds the water so during the winter I'd expect limited availability. Nice to play a different course but wouldn't feel compelled to play it again.

✓12 Oct 2021
Well after the Old Course this is a little more tricky with some tighter fairways and water courses virtually everywhere. Not quite as well maintained as the Old Course but you can see that it seems to stay wetter in places but overall a lovely course and put the two together and you have some quality golf.

✓29 Sep 2021
I don’t think anyone goes and stays at St Pierre specifically to play the Mathern, so you sort of get what you expect. Greens are a lot slower than old course but still run fairly true. Lots of irons off tees to avoid ditches and a couple of testing holes. Flew round the first 8 holes, then caught up with a few groups and had to wait on every hole after. I’d probably just pay extra next time and play the old course twice.
Mark
✓29 Sep 2021
Course in great condition, tee boxes, fairways and greens (except for a few unrepaired pitch marks) immaculate. We teed off 1:30, so quite a lot of bunkers left unraked by some selfish people in front. Round took 5 and a half hours, no marshalls out helping move things on, which meant lots of waiting around. Found some of the greens hard to stay on with approach shots, but probably more down to us as a group than anything else!
Emy
✓24 Sep 2021
The speed of play on the Mathern GC was about right, less people on the course and also helped by the starter guy, Dave who went round the course marshalling and collecting rubbish off the course. Speed of play matters a lot.
Emy
✓24 Sep 2021
A marshall on the course would be very useful to speed up play. All you need is a marshall that goes round to tell players not to spend too much time looking for balls or practicing their shots or putts. The speed of play will eventually affect the number of people coming to stay and play. It was ridiculously slow. Speed of play matters a lot.
Jonathan
✓18 Sep 2021
The views were spectacular but again the greens were very average and there was an air of neglect rather than first class venue:in particular, was the condition of the lake, an overgrown mass of weeds and reeds, in desperate need of attention. Marriott can surely not be proud as the custodians of the historical monument.
Jonathan
✓18 Sep 2021
we were actually shocked by the poor condition of the greens. They hadn't been cut for days. there were bare patches on course which weren't designated GUR and there was a complete absence of distance markers which is unheard of at quality venues.

First time playing this course, but we played it twice. Although much shorter than the Old course don’t underestimate the challenges, great use of natural features to make you really think about your club choice and line. Greens were much slower than the Old course, which took a bit of getting used to as we played the Old first and no point in using the practice green before this course. Overall lovely course.

We played this course on day 2 (with the Old Course on the first day) it was a different experience which was very welcome, however it felt as though we were playing the Old Course's poor relative, the greens were very spongy and, overall, it didn't seem to have had the same attention. That said, it was a very pleasurable experience with some lovely holes which offered an alternative challenge. We were very much surprised that the Mathern WHS has the same rating as the Old Course as it did feel considerably easier. Regarding the half way facilities, it had the same issues a the Old Course, however the loo and the half way house (which is shared between both the courses) was further away from the end of the 9th, meaning that more time would be lost during the turn. Like Peter on the Old Course, Merv our starter on the second day was equally friendly and helpful. explaining the layout of the course to us to ensure that we didn't get lost as, for someone that hadn't played the course before, the layout of some of the tees could confuse if you don't know what you need to look out for .
Elaine
✓5 Jul 2021
The course was long with some tricky holes and accuracy was very much needed else the trees (and there were many of them) came into play, but we loved it. The views of the valleys and the River Severn and the old bridge added to the overall atmosphere. Disappointment was the half way facilities, the loo (of which only the ladies was open) was not of the best quality or cleanliness, and the half way house was not open. The starter, Peter, was lovely, he's been there 24 and 3/4 years and we could understand why, his manner and helpfulness was superb.

The course was in good condition. The greens were great after some overnight rain. The only downside was the first cut of rough left it hard to find your ball which did not help pace of play. The fairways were not tightly cut but ok. The tees were mainly flat...but there were some up and downhill lie's. The starter did a great job organising lots of keen golfers.

The Mathern holes are somewhat jumbled and not logical as you go around, but we knew that as we have played it a number of times before. It was wet in places and the leaves on the fairways did not help. Groundsmen were doing everything they could but are fighting a loosing battle until after the leaf fall. Perhaps next month will be better.
Michael

Maintenance on the course was ongoing and the green staff were busy around the course. However, the abundance of Oak and Chestnut trees combined with leaves made the course challenging. Greens could have been quicker and putting was not alway true.

Lovely course, very well kept. The greens were lovely. The course was in excellent condition especially as we had 3 days of continuous and heavy rain. There was a mix up somewhere along the line as 2 or 3 groups turned up had tee times but they didn't show up on the controllers tee time sheet. He squeezed them in but it caused a bit of a back log hence the slow rating as the last 7 holes we were left waiting on the tees.

No buggies on the first day was a disappointment (the course was not that wet!!) but with trolleys, we managed - a couple of inclines were difficult for our geriatrics!! Buggies were back on for 2nd/3rd days which made the round much easier and more enjoyable.

Wet November day made it a challenging afternoon but course held up remarkably well and was very enjoyable to play.

The old course is fantastic, well looked after through out. Drainage is also great as huge downpour on Saturday but nearly all gone come Sunday morning. Will be looking forward to playing it again.

Unfortunately for us, the weather had been poor in the week leading up to our weekend and the Mathern Course was closed, which meant that the Old Course was busier than expected. The staff in the club shop and on the course were excellent, in very trying conditions. The course itself was very wet so we never really got to see it in all its glory. Understandably the fairways were holding water but the greens held up quite well. The fact that I marked this experience down as average is down to the weather preventing us from seeing the course in better playing conditions but I would definitely like to come back again in the future.

Weather too wet for buggies. Seemed the signage between holes was geared for men so quite difficult for ladies to follow.

Very difficult to get on during the first day. Confusion at the pro-shop on T-Off times. Missed playing last 4 holes because the previous players were so slow. Facilities on the course for PGA rated course were again limited/basic. Buggies were basic with no complimentary water or course maps. Felt there was no luxury.

Course was in good condition. Hadn’t played it in 30 years and it was really good to play again. Saturday pace was fine unfortunately Sunday I heard they double booked and the front 9 was painfully slow.

It was raining - so very wet. There could be better signage on the course -we fund it difficult to know where we were going - we got lost once!

Condition of a Championship course was not good. Tees full of weeds and daisies. Expected much better conditions from this course.

A small course at 5500..yet took 4 1/2 hrs to get round due to society in front. They were very poor n no marshal to get them moving. Not a tough course at all but decent layout...greens much slower than old course.wouldve been more enjoyable if pace of play was better.

Marshall on first tee then nowt on course, after only 3 holes there was one slow group holding up all behind. So slow round. Nice holes are towards the end of back nine.

it was a Monday, we didn't play great but better than the day before and the weather was good, saw some sunshine! I wasn't expecting a great deal from the course from what i had heard but i was really pleasantly surprised. the greens although small were true and good, the par 3's were long and a test, the short par 4's have cleverly placed hazard, a couple played very long and overall, despite not scoring great, i thought this was a really good course and would go back. It clearly helped that we had no waiting to do and the pace of play was perfect. The staff in the club house could do with having some lessons from the hotel staff, but the chap who saw us of the first was good fun.

it was a Sunday, we didn't play great and the weather was playable but not fantastic, but unfortunately any round where you have to wait every tee shot and every shot on the course doesn't make for an enjoyable round. the back 9 were really good holes and the greens were superb but in my vies the front 9 has too many holes that are nothing holes and over all it didn't live up to the hype. not sure i'd bother it again over the other course of those near by. The staff in the club house could do with having some lessons from the hotel staff, but the chap who saw us of the first was good fun.

We played this course twice with 0930 and 0830 starts, nice steady rounds and no waiting at any time, nice course the greens were much better than the old course. A very pleasant place to play.

We played this course 3 times, the first round at 1230 was very very long 5.3/4 hours, this was because we were behind a large group of ladies, 8 x 4 balls, the steward did say it would be slow at the start but not that slow, the other 2 rounds were the opposite starting at 0930 and finished in 3.1/4 hours each time no waiting . We found the greens very slow and bumpy, the fairways needed a cut, talking to a local member he said the standard of the course had suffered due he thought to management cut backs. This 20 handicapper on a first visit to a championship course was able to achieve 35 and 38 points with 2 blobs in each round.

Would not play this course again. It was challenging as it’s a figure 8 and the ditches are almost on every hole which was very frustrating. Never lost so many balls in our lives.

The weather was misty and cold but that did not matter. We followed a group of 4 lady members off the first tee, which turned out to be a disaster. There was no group that we could see from the 1st tee in front of them, but they still took 2½ hours to do the front 9 without once attempting to call us through. They were a little quicker on the back 9 but the whole round still took 2¾ hours to complete the round. Two of our party were so fed up with waiting for every shot that they walked off on the 10th tee. We did not see a course Marshall all day. We tried not to let it spoil our trip but it was a bit of a pain to say the least.
