    • 1 Night Bed and Breakfast at Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa
    • 2 Rounds at Matfen Hall Golf Club

Set in 300 acres of beautiful parkland near Hadrian's Wall in West Northumberland, Matfen Hall is a 19th-century Gothic stately home with 27 holes right on the doorstep. The main house looks out over rolling countryside and the parkland course, while the hotel's 63 rooms keep the country-house feel but don't skimp on comfort. It's the sort of place that works just as well for a couples' escape as it does for a society weekend, with plenty to do when the clubs go back in the boot.

You've got serious warm-up options too, with a TopTracer range, simulator facilities and short-game areas, plus a par-three course for a quick loop before dinner. Off the course, the spa, bars and three dining options mean you can keep everything under one roof if you want to. Location-wise, it's a proper countryside stay, but you're still close enough to Newcastle for an evening out if your group likes a bit of nightlife.

Who is this for?
Golfers and groups after a North East parkland break with 27-hole flexibility, strong practice facilities and quality food and spa options on-site.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-high handicappers who like variety, couples mixing golf with spa time and societies or corporate groups who want a country-house base near Newcastle.

Matfen Hall Golf Club

Matfen Hall’s golf courses are some of the finest in the North East, offering a challenge to golfers of all levels amongst the native wildlife and stunning Northumberland scenery.

There is a TopTracer driving range, simulator facilities and ample short game practice facilities, the perfect places to hone your game before heading out onto the course.

The original par-72, 6569-yard Douglas/Standing Stone course includes a postage stamp green protected by a Ha-Ha wall, with water featuring on several holes, including the signature par-3, 17th. The additional par-36, 3357-yard Dewlaw course adds variety as a third loop, perfect for an extended golf break.

Obstacles to be negotiated include the beautiful but fast-flowing River Pont, which interferes on more than one occasion, particularly on the long par-4s which are the most testing aspect of the course, and the dry stone ‘ha ha' wall, which runs directly across the estate.

At the long par-3 17th, golfers are challenged to find the putting surface, a narrow strip of green perched perilously over the river below.

A relatively easy walk, Matfen Hall is ideal for golf breaks, with a 9-hole course easing the traffic over the main track, and offering a great opportunity to those still mastering the game.

At the end of an enjoyable round, the clubhouse, known as The Keepers, guarantees a warm welcome and a relaxing environment.

Accommodation at Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa

Matfen Hall is privately owned and feels like it, with the grand, historic main building setting the tone. The 63 bedrooms range from comfortable doubles and twins that suit golf groups to larger, more stately rooms where the period features do a lot of the heavy lifting. Expect a country-house look and feel, with modern touches layered in so it doesn't come across as stuffy. High ceilings, original architectural details and views over the estate give the place character, while the rooms themselves are designed to balance historic charm with the kind of comfort you actually want after 36 holes.

The spa is a real selling point, especially if not everyone in your party is playing every day. Facilities include a 16-metre swimming pool, sauna and steam room, plus a full treatment menu covering everything from massages and body wraps to facials and manicures. There's also a Technogym-equipped fitness suite, handy if you like a stretch and a light session after 18 holes. For golfers, the combination of spa and fitness facilities makes Matfen Hall a strong choice if you're mixing performance with recovery, or if you're travelling with non-golfers who want more than just a seat in the clubhouse.

Food and drink are spread across three venues. The Emerald Restaurant is the more formal option, set in the former library and focused on seasonal tasting menus using locally sourced Northumberland ingredients. The intricately decorated ceiling and views over the estate make it the right choice for a special evening. Cloisters offers a more relaxed à la carte menu, with the Champagne Bar there for pre-dinner drinks. The Keepers clubhouse is ideal for something casual, with bistro-style dishes and a wraparound balcony that looks straight over the course. All three menus lean heavily on Northumberland produce, so you're eating local whether you're after fine dining or a post-round burger.

Rooms are designed to suit different needs. Standard doubles and twins offer comfort and character without excess, ideal for golfers who want a good night's sleep and a decent breakfast before heading out. The larger stately rooms step up the luxury, with more space, grander period features and the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel like you're staying in a proper country house rather than a hotel. All rooms reflect the natural elegance of Matfen Hall, with careful decoration that balances historic charm with modern convenience.

For groups and societies, Matfen Hall works well. The variety of dining options means you can mix formal dinners with casual clubhouse meals, the spa gives non-golfers something to do, and the 27-hole layout means you can play different combinations across multiple days without repeating the same 18. The location also helps: you're 20 minutes from Newcastle if you want a night out, but you're deep enough into Northumberland to enjoy the countryside and the quiet. If you fancy a Northumberland weekend with 27 holes on tap, include Matfen Hall on your next UK Golf Break.

Beautiful hotel, location and gorgeous room though extremely hot (with heating off). Spa tired. A new spa is being built outside and lots of building work going on. Loud drilling above our room at 8am! Fine dining restaurant - Emerald and main lounge inaccessible due to NUFC bosses in meeting there for duration. Shame as birthday trip. Only 4 people total in alternative restaurant - Cloisters. Food excellent but no atmosphere. Breakfast in Orangery beautiful room and excellent food.

We enjoyed our stay the food was excellent and the staff most attentive from arrival however the water went off in the middle of the night there was no one answering in reception so we had to get up and go downstairs to find someone. Our whole wing was off and there was other residents also looking for help. We also didn't find the water and teasmade in the room until the next morning as this was hidden in the cabinet under the TV. It would have been helpful if the staff could have shown us on arrival we had extreme heat in the room on Wed night and needed a drink. There was also some confusion over our booking where the hotel charged us again for our dinner. Spa facilities were lovely and relaxing good

Arrived at hotel to only to find out that someone from YGT had cancelled our stay, the question is why would they do this?. Luckily for us the hotel was not fully booked and they were able to give us two rooms that fitted our needs. They also increased our food allowance from what YGT had given,

The hotel and room was very nice and comfortable and staff were friendly. We did have an issue with the evening meal, when we checked in we were told we didn't need to book for evening meal just to go to the conservatory bar. When we went for food we were then told that we should have gone to the clubhouse for food but it was now closed. We were able to eat in the conservatory bar but it was from a limited menu. Breakfast the following day was very good however.

No complaints about the hotel and staff, excellent location with fantastic views of the golf course from hotel and clubhouse. Would liked to have had a discount on drinks as in previous years, for a 12-player group.

You must visit Matfen Hall. It is the largest family owned spa hotel in Northumberland with 27 holes to play on the well manicured parkland golf course. Excellent practice facilities and a par 3 course too. Food is excellent. Rooms are completed to a high standard and staff are very helpful. Book it now!

My husband, myself and two friends have stayed at Matfen before but this time we asked to be upgraded and we were not disappointed. Rooms were beautiful, very well maintained and furnished. Breakfast was very good, but one comment would be that tables could maybe be larger to accommodate everything which would make the staffs life easier too. Our meals/snacks at Keepers Lodge were very good and Keith, Pam, Ian and the chefs excellent.

Our 2 games varied between quiet and fairly busy as you play 2 different 9 hole courses. Moved our tee times to earlier no bother both days. Helpful staff. Not a busy course. Temporary greens and course in very mixed condition. Lots of course restructuring work going on so noisy and lots and workmen and machinery around in places. Not worth the price to play while work in progress. Course play itself really good with water challenges - lost a few balls! Fab weather and loved the golf but wouldn’t return until work complete!

Wow. Site and club house were a different level. Buggies had course GPS Map on which proved helpful. We played Standing Stone and Delaw. The 1st 9 was spectacular in the grounds of Matfen Hall which could be seen from several holes. Beautiful course and scenery. The back 9 (for us) was less visual and felt like we had been given the poorer deal (but there was a members comp on playing the 3rd 9 hole course in the grounds). The back 9 was open and still interesting and the group enjoyed it.

The set up at Matfen Hall is quite unique with there being 3, 9 hole courses that you can play, each day we were given 2 of the 3 courses to play each starting and finishing near the clubhouse. The greens were very good but the teeing areas were not of the same standard. The courses are very playable and you can score well with receptive greens. The rough however is extremely thick and it is virtually impossible to find a ball that misses the fairway or first cut.

A challenging course especially for higher handicappers but this didn't detract from the enjoyment. The course itself was in great condition in pleasant surroundings. No complaints from our group.

Time on course over three days was fine, fortunate with weather which was a bonus.

The course was a fairly long course with sometimes long walks from Green to the next Tee which was often poorly signposted. Provided you played reasonably straight there were few hazards. Pleasant surroundings and bird life.
