Golf Courses at Meon Valley Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Championship Meon Course

The Meon Course is a regular feature on the European Seniors Tour, and is widely regarded as one of the best in the Southern counties. The 6,520 yard layout is Hampshire’s only European PGA Tour destination and is most memorable for the threatening water hazards, providing a good test for golfers of all abilities. The picturesque 12th may be the most impressive hole, a demanding downhill par-3 where the target is surrounded by water.

Course Information

Opened for play 1999

Tees

White 6,520 yards SSS 69
Yellow 6,097 yards SSS 68
Red 5,609 yards SSS 68

Valley Course

The Valley Course may only be a 9-hole setup, but the two loops together comprise a challenging par-70 that measures close to 6,000 yards. The picturesque course is built around a ruined Roman settlement and is maintained to the same standard as the neighbouring Meon, making it an enjoyable round for every golfer.

Meon Valley's practice centre has benefited from the recent addition of an excellent driving range, where the team of PGA professionals utilise the latest video technology for their tuition.

Great venue, food service very poor. Had to wait till 11am to order hot rolls on arrival, no labels on evening meals, no sauces or gravy, very limited choice all round. No one to serve drinks from restaurant, have to fetch your own. Told by reception that breakfast was from 8.00 tiill 10.00, arrived at 9.05 to find doors closed, was advised to bang on door for entry. Food stopped cooking at 9.00, had to have whatever was remaining, as we're others. Staff and catering management in urgent need of serious overall and organisation, completely put a dampener on the stay. Was doing a recce for a golf society break, will not be recommending this venue.

Rooms were spacious and clean although no housekeeping service so once the tea bag and milk has gone you have to look for your own replacements along with towels and bedding if your stay was longer than ours. No problem since it was only a two night stay. Bit odd for a hotel though. The bar didn’t have enough staff and our three course meal was a free for all in the bar area with practically no staff who were working flat out. The food arrived piecemeal so we were waiting for missing courses and had to go and find our own water in a jug and collect glasses. There were a few of us so it was all over the place. Queues at the bar were extensive for drinks, food etc but were dealt with very well by limited bar staff. Second night was in the restaurant and the food choices were limited to sloppy things like stews with rice and potatoes in Buffett style. Cake for sweet and a brown looking fruit salad. Worst bit of the stay. However having said this we are all aware of huge price hikes in hiring staff and it’s obvious it’s hammering hospitality. We would go back because it’s a nice place or it had been and times will change again, I hope.

From the moment we arrived it was obvious that the staff were not interested in providing much in the way of hospitality towards our group. The reception staff seemed annoyed that we had requested some information about check in and use of the leisure facilities. This unfortunately did not improve. The Manager on site that weekend was rude and unaccommodating to our group, and based on the reactions of other golfers/hotel guests we we not the only ones who weren't happy. The bar was shut early on Saturday night. No food available in the whole hotel at 4pm on a Sunday. They ran out of beer on Sunday. Only one bar staff serving around 50 people. Not a single bottle of drink water or otherwise could be purchased from the hotel/pro-shop/restaurant and it was 32 degrees! The restaurant was closed the whole weekend, and instead of a sit down 3 course meal, we had a sub-par buffet dinner, breakfast was unfortunately not any better. Beds were comfy. No air con just a fan. Steam room was out of action. It was disappointing as in our last stay the Hotel couldn't do more for us, hence why we returned to Meon. This time however, we seemed to be an inconvenience rather than valued guests. We shall not be returning for our annual trip.

I was told Menu choices would be done at the table @7.30, but no!!! the same receptionist messed around trying to take food orders aswell as allocating rooms....this was very time consuming. Also very bad for the single guest who had to wait to check in to his room behind us. Infact I took over doing the Menu choices for him. Several room keys didnt work so ladies were up and down to recepition. The food was of average standard for dinner, but at least with my menu list everyone got the correct food. Breakfast was extremly POOR, short if not no supplies of even the simple things like bread for toast and danish pastries. The eggs both scramble and fried were nothing more than disgusting they were dried up and lood like they had been there for hours. The only lady waitress was quite rude and unhelpful.

Myself and 11 other golfer stayed at the Hotel for 3 nights Bed, Breakfast and evening meal. On arrival after check-in 2 of my party reported their room smelt of vomit, was unclean and tatty, the shower curtain was mouldy. We all turned up at the restaurant area for our meal and was told we were over an hour late, my paperwork said dinner at 8pm and it was 7.30pm?. The menu choice was very poor, on the starters there was 2 types of Caesar salad one deluxe and one not? 4 other starters that were uninspiring. The mains were also uninspired , beef burger and chicken burger, chicken curry with very little chicken in it. The worst of all was it took hours to arrive and by the time we had got our main course the bar had shut at 10.15pm. After our golf at lunchtime the next day we tried to order sandwiches from the bar and were told that all we could have was crisps or nuts. That night I thought I would book earlier for our meal in order not to eat so late and be able to get a drink after the meal but that didn't work as we sat down at 7pm to the same menu we were still not getting our sweets until after 10pm. The bar had run out of bitter, larger and cider on draught and closed at 10.15pm as the night before. The third night we could not stand another spoilt evening so we booked a local pub (The Railway Inn) and had a fantastic meal and plenty of all the drinks people wanted. I have complained to Your Golf Travel and asked for a refund on the 3rd nights meal of £50 per head compensation but they said they take no responsibility for the quality of the venue but instead they got the venue to offer me and my party a free bottle of wine and room upgrade when we booked again. Not one of my party want's to go back to have another night in a dirty room and eat the food at the venue. I would not recommend the hotel and Your Golf Travel as an agent as they simply deflect any form responsibility should anything not be right. Bet they won't put this review on the site.

They had to wait 4 hours to check in and then were given alternative rooms. Breakfast was poorly run and messy simply due to lack of staff. Indefinite wait for food that had run out to be refilled. Had been at reception for ten minutes without seeing a soul! At dinner, one of the party had to wait five minutes after everyone else’s main had been served before his arrived, all ordered at the same time! The same gent just didn’t get his pudding, when queried, it turned out no sticky toffee pudding was available but no one had bothered to tell us! Whether this was a problem with the lack of fluent English spoken we never found out. However situation partially resolved by offer of a complementary drink. Restaurants closed. George, Thank you for giving me the opportunity to contact you at Golf Travel Specialists before I submit an on-line review. As you are well aware, feed-back from your customers is absolutely essential for the on-going improvement of your product packages and it’s essential that a positive outcome, from those that have booked with you in the past, that drives the future of your business. I’ve been organising golf weekends for over 20 years at various locations in southern England (and Wales) for groups of up to 12-16 and, by and large, they have been well received by those that I invite. However, I regret to inform you that our experience at Meon Valley Hotel and Country Club was less than satisfactory. Sure we all understand the restrictive nature that the hospitality industry has gone through and will no doubt continue to suffer, but there were issues that were identified by various members of our group that have prompted me to get in touch. Without delving too deep into each, I think a simple list of areas that need improving is more than enough for your company to be concerned and perhaps galvanise you into contacting the hotel for comment.. On arrival in the car park, the first thing we saw was rubbish skips that were overflowing with rubbish strewn over the adjacent area. The reception desk is the first impression one gets when entering the hotel. It looked like they were in the throes of packing the place up with boxes stacked behind the receptionists. When we went to have our pre golf meeting in the bar area we discovered that there was no food available, only tea, coffee or soft drinks! We were also told that there was ‘no beer’ on tap! This is totally unacceptable for a hotel that purports to be a ‘Country Club’ There were other players there too justifiably complaining about this situation. Sure, they had bottles of beer but not quite the same! Suffice to say, we had to adjourn to a local pub (1mile walk) to get a proper beer and we probably spent £300 or so in that establishment. Money that the hotel could have easily gained and been thankful to your company for delivering the business to them. The golf course was OK. Our evening meal was incredibly poor. The menu was catering for a different set of clients. None that were booked into the hotel. In terms of rating the food, I’d give it 4/10. Breakfast wasn’t much better either. I think that the staff were really good considering the circumstances. I understand that the hotel is run by Britannia Hotels and was formerly Marriott (the clue was in the old Marriott bedroom carpets!) which is a shame as Marriott are definitely a step above the Britannia group…... and it showed! The hotel looked very tired and could do with a bit of a freshen-up. Surely, anyone would have thought that a year of lockdown could have been used to make themselves presentable when the travel restrictions were lifted. It would benefit your business if someone from your company could evaluate the hotel for

Came for a two day golf break with seven friends. Having read previous reviews I admit to being a bit apprehensive, however apart from not being able to get a coffee when we arrived at 11am everything was pretty much spot on. The rooms were spacious and clean, plenty of tea & coffee quite adequate for our needs. There was a reduced menu for the evening meal, but there was enough choice to suit everyone. Breakfast was either full English or continental. The staff, from the front desk to those working in the bar and restaurant couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Yes the hotel is a little dated in terms of decor and need some refurbishment, but this in no way impacted on the enjoyment of our stay. Everybody was in agreement that they would come again. For the price we paid, which was £69 per person for bed, breakfast, evening meal and two rounds of golf it was unbeatable value.

Unfortunately I have to complaint about the service at the hotel, the hotel itself was fine, rooms where perfect and very clean and the facilities or swimming pool, gym etc was more than adequate. My complaint is regarding the evening meal and service, on arrival we where asked to select what we wanted for Dinner so it can all be sorted mainly due to the new COVID restrictions which was fine, we had confirmation that our dinner reservation was 7.30 so all good. Once we sat it took nearly 20mins before both tables where asked what drinks we would like, it then took another 10mins to get these by which time 6 out of 8 of the party had got starters whilst 2 where waiting! These did finally turn up but after the others had finished. We we tried to order more drinks but due to lack of staff and any sort of management this just seemed impossible. Our main meals on one of the tables then came out at 8.55pm and 10 mins later 3 more meals came out, the final meal seemed not to be appearing when finally a waitress came out and advised that they had run out of his but there was a spare burger which he said yes too, by the time this came out we had all finished our meals and his was Luke warm at best. We still struggled to get drinks and the final straw was the waitress coming out at 9.45 to advise there would be no 3rd course because the Chef had decided to leave and said to her that she can either do them or tell everyone there is none. So as u can imagine this put a bit of a bad edge on our weekend god trip, so I feel it only right to send this email as it is not what we expect.

The worst hotel experience I have ever had. Here are some of the low-lights: Despite travelling all morning and arriving about midday, we had to wait around for 30-45 mins to check in. On Friday evening we came down for dinner about 8pm. We had booked and reserved a table in the restaurant. We were told that there would be a wait of about an hour and a half. Whilst inconvenient, we accepted that, took the menus handed to us and went outside to enjoy a drink. About 45 mins later the chap that gave us the menus and reserved the table said they would no longer be serving food. A first for me in any hotel that I have stayed in in any part of the world. We were forced to get a taxi to the nearest town. The cost was around £150 not to mention the time and inconvenience. On the Saturday my party of 4 arrived at breakfast to chaos. There was 1 person running around trying to clear tables show guests to their seats and deal with any questions. About 20 or so members came in and helped themselves to the breakfast buffet and cleared it out meaning we had to wait for 10-15 mins whilst stocks were replenished. The breakfast was very average and the bacon was practically raw. There was stale coffee in a large canteen and the "hot" water for the tea was luke warm at best. The room was average with no air conditioning and a window that opened approx 2 inches. The staff were quite pleasant and apologetic but there was simply just not enough of them to do the job. I shall be asking for a full refund as my two days away were completely spoiled by such shoddy treatment. Apalling. I also know were were not alone - anyone I spoke to said the same thing about the service.

This was our 3rd visit to the hotel but the 1st since it has become part of the Britannia chain. In the past as a Marriott hotel, we have had a superb time. The food was great in the past as was the hospitality. When we arrived and went up to our rooms, we noticed that the corridors were lined with empty beer and wine glasses, which were still there on our departure. Dinner was pretty average on the Friday evening but served quite quickly, which was a different story all together on the Saturday when we had been sat down for an hour and only had our main course. I had ordered taxis for us to go out and had to change those times and then had to leave before the desserts came out as the taxis we had reordered for half an hour later had arrived. This was totally down to a staff shortage and lots of other guests were complaining as well. We had a bit of a fright when we went down for golf on the Saturday afternoon for our 3 tee times only for the guy in charge to tell us that we were not on the list for that day or the next. I had to go back to my room to get the details to show him. He then managed to squeeze us in at a later slot for both days. The course was great and in very good condition but due to the experience at the hotel we would probably not stay there again. I just want to add that any problems were down to the hotel and communication between departments and completely out of Your Golf Travels hands.

Our weekend away with friends (4 golfers in all) at Meon Valley was very enjoyable...despite the weather! We were fortunate enough to play the championship course at Meon Valley on the Saturday. This is a good test of golf for all levels of golfers, with some stunning par 3 holes and some dog leg holes which were really challenging. At Meon Valley it’s more about where to put the ball rather than simply standing up and blasting it!

The hotel was great value for money – dinner was well served, there was a good choice on the menu, wine was a little pricey, but overall the dining experience was very good. Breakfast was a feast, with anything and everything you could think of to choose from!

The people at Your Golf Travel were great to speak to, knowledgeable and very responsive to our requirements (Golf, beer, food, bed, more golf!). It’s always reassuring when everything clicks into place and we will certainly be in contact with you guys for our next golf break.
