The course measures just over 7,200 yards from the championship markers and with a dramatic finishing hole in the 550 yard par-5 18th there is sure to be some excitement when Monte Rei hosts a professional tournament in future years.
Although the course can satisfy the longest hitters it is around the greens where shots will be dropped, the subtle undulations on the putting surfaces as well as numerous runoff areas ensure that only the best struck shot will find the right part of the putting surface.
With this breathtaking golf course complimented perfectly by stunning views Monte Rei is a golf course that is etched on your golfing soul. Monte Rei Golf Resort is one of the finest holiday destinations to emerge in recent years, regularly rated the number one course in Portugal. With an emphasis on service and five-star luxury, those fortunate to visit this luxury resort will have an experience that they won’t forget.
Make sure you pack a camera with you for numerous great golfing pictures, most notably on the 226 yard 11th hole and the 18th where a large lake runs all the way up to the front of the green.
Signature Hole: Hole 18, Par 5, 548 yards, SI 15
The 18th is an outstanding finishing hole. A long, downhill par 5, with a tempting play to go for the green in two, for those not feeling the weariness of the round’s golf. However, this option should be considered by the long hitters only and golfers should take caution of the lake before the green, ready to catch any mis hit approach shots.
Monte Rei is ranked as one of the best courses in Portugal

The villas at Monte Rei are amazing and by far the best accommodation I've stayed in on a golf course from a size and also quality point of view. We visited the Grill and the Veranda restaurant and the staff were super friendly, accommodating and the service was quick.

The villas are tired and the back yards are messy and unkempt. There is a door stop right in front of the toilet that is very dangerous if you go to the bathroom at night. They did not have enough staff to do room service. There are pigeons nesting in the roofs of the surrounding houses,

We stayed in a villa - there is no hotel as such. The villa was well-appointed and comfortable. The staff at the resort are wonderful - nothing was too much trouble and all spoke English. The main restaurant The Grill is fine but not amazing. The Veranda likewise. The Vistas was closed.

Excellent well appointed villas which are for couples or families. You have space and luxury to help you rest comfortably between the golf. Best to keep a car because of the location. Having your own transport helps to discover the restaurants in the many towns nearby which is highly recommended.

Monte Rei had potential to be great. The atmosphere around the place was one of a struggling course. Staff quite dull and not very helpful. Nothing in shop not even a ball marker which was a disappointing start. The tapas lunch was basically fruit done as many ways as they could. Although sitting in a nice clubhouse it had no buzz and was dead. The course itself hadn’t been cut in ages as weeds were growing on fairways and rough. Greens were ok but again not cut, you could actually see your footprint where you walked. A great layout but looks like a course struggling.

This course has not been looked after. the greens were in atrocious condition. the club house was soulless and the staff were not very friendly. the Pro shop had no mens clothing for sale. the bar had run out of draught beer so we had to have bottled beer. this course had been billed as "the best in portugal" by some people and is plainly resting on its laurels. it was a massive disappointment and we would NOT want to go back. the greens were pitted, had weed growing on them and no professional golfer would go near greens like that.

We loved Monte Rei, its easily one of the best courses all of us have played. Every hole has something to recommend it in terms of danger, challenge and to look at. I've given 4 stars overall, the conditioning of the course overall is excellent given the restrictions on water etc. you get good lies everywhere - even in the native areas!!. However, the greens on day 1 were sanded which is essential maintenance but made them slow and hard to read and definitely was something which when you're paying a lot a round did cause some frustration. They did improve over the weekend but I would say we've played on better at similar courses down the road in Vilamoura at the same time in the year for less money. From a facilities point of view, it's top notch. Range, practice facilities are all excellent. My one gripe which made me almost consider giving 4 stars, was the pro shop. We had all hoped to be able to get a couple of souvenirs but there was absolutely nothing in there. If we had forgotten something or needed a new version of something that wasn't a glove or a ball then we were out of luck. Was really surprised that somewhere which prides itself on being a destination wouldn't have been better in that respect. Overall, though what a course and we didn't even bat an eyelid at playing it 3 times over the weekend.

✓26 Apr 2024
Unfortunately the fairways have suffered due to prolonged lack of water and the greens have got some funny patches or maybe disease on them. Great layout, fantastic views and otherwise enjoyable but we question the €200+ per person as value for money. Not anymore. Maybe too many bunkers for 20+ handicappers. Didn’t even get our name badge (nor did anyone else we met). If you’re a long hitter you’ll have fun or maybe not!

Brilliant experience, clubs taken off us on arrival, free practice facilities an hour before tee off, we went for drink in bar first, then just walked down to buggies already fitted out with clubs. Took buggies to practice area then went to first tee. I've only given 3 stars for course condition as fairways have suffered with drought and it was pick and place. Great course layout. On return clubs cleaned.

Great test of golf, great layout, very friendly staff. Greeted by staff that took our bags to buggies, escorted us to the driving range and practice facilities. Cleaned our clubs after the round. Just a shame that the fairways hadn't recovered from the very dry season. Greens and tees in perfect condition. You can tell that fairways will be back to their proper standard shortly and we will be there to play again.

✓27 Jun 2023
The golf course design is absolutely stunning as are the facilities. However, there has been a drought there and we played the course the day that it closed for maintenance. The course was very dry and not in good condition at all which was disappointing. Apart from that, our tee time was 12:00 and the shuttle from our hotel to the course was scheduled for 11:00 and the drive takes an hour which was obviously never going to work. We tried to get hold of the shuttle company to get them to pick us up at 10:00 but there was no answer, which meant that we had to arrange for Ubers to take us to the course. My suggestion is that your agents take more care when booking shuttle times... travel time should be considered when booking a shuttle to a course and playing time should be considered when booking a shuttle from a course.
Philip

✓1 May 2023
What a magnificent layout - it’s a fabulous design and you will play it many times and not get bored . However , the condition was very poor for the signature algarve course with burnt fairways and diseased greens with sub standard roll . Disappointed because it can be and should be so much better.
Mike
✓24 Apr 2023
This used to be by far the best course in the Algarve, condition was always perfect. We felt this year everything was looking a little tired. Greens nowhere near how they used to be and nowhere near as good as Quinta da Cima. Fairways a bit threadbare, belt of Bermuda grass around the greens has become really soft and spongy, bunkers inconsistent, some had liner poking through the sand. Facilities generally very good but again looking a little tired (two of the four showers out of order). We have been to Monte Rei every year since 2013 (apart from lockdown) but are beginning to question if we will go again. The course design is still to my mind best in Algarve. Let’s hope condition is a temporary blip.

Excellent tees, fairways. Beautiful location, scenery stunning. Service good from Buggy/Caddie Masters. Practice area superb. Greens were scabby and slow - not at all as expected. Service in pro shop and bar 'indifferent' Played two rounds and was told that the greens were better on the second round - they weren't. Not sure we will ever bother playing here again.

✓11 Jul 2022
THis is luxury golf from the moment you arrive when your clubs are taken and put onto the buggy and you are warmly welcomed. Practice facilities excellent, buggies had GPS. The scenery has been affected by a serious fire which has burnt off much of the vegetation on the hills and sides of the course, it is starting to grow back but didn't detract from the beauty of the course. We went round at our own pace never being bothered by anyone behind or coming up to anyone in front. The course design is excellent - lots of raised tees and interesting shots along or over water. Greens were a little slow and very receptive to spin - you could throw the ball at the flag and stop it dead. They took a food order before we set off and delivered it half way round freshly made. We were met on the 18th green who witnessed my son sink an eagle putt to beat me by a point and handed engraved bag tags. Clubs cleaned etc. Overall a great experience , would love to play it again

Having played this course in 2007 when it first opened, I was really excited to be going back. I expected that it would have matured and been even better than the first time. Course was dry, greens and fairways in poor condition. Pre golf facilities were good, nice to hit a few free balls before a round, golf buggys have a built in golf tracking map. Playing in Monte Rei for the first time, we discovered that you will never find wayward balls that did not land on the fairways. The clovers are everywhere and once the balls land there, you can forget about finding it even though you are very sure the spot it landed. The sand bunkers are tough to get out if you’re close to the high edges. The greens are not in the best conditions. Overall a challenging course.

Upon arriving at the course you are treated exceptional well .The staff are very informative and helpful. A very beautiful scenic course with very interesting holes and a lot of bunkers. A free buggy was provided with our green fees which had a in built range finder. Very useful. This was probably best as the greens to the next tee are a very long walk. With the buggy despite it being a long course we played it in well under 4 hours. A must to play ! However a note of warning if you are staying at certain accommodations in Vilamoura free transfers to and from the course are not included in your holiday package. With it being approximately 40 miles from Vilamoura it can be pricey by taxi to get there and back.

✓5 Mar 2020
£175 for the round incl buggies and clubs and a sleeve of balls is clearly very expensive however the course is simply superb, the clubs very good and we were not chased at all, letting just one single through. We had a pleasant coffee on the balcony then excellent practice facilities then the round which took us 4.5 hours. The tees were a little suffering from divots but ok however the fairways were excellent ditto the greens. The single issue in my mind was the Bermuda fluff around the green fringes. It was way too long and represented a significant penalty. You do two good shots to be just off the putting surface then massively difficult to control out, with a virtually covered ball. Better off in the green side bunker. Overall 9 out of 10. Derek Johnson Parkstone Hcp 7.

First class attention to detail from being met right through to the clubs being returned cleaned to our cars. Expensive indeed but overall worth it.
