Mottram Hall’s 7,006 yard 18-hole, Par 72 Championship golf course in Cheshire, is one of a kind. The host venue for the 2013 European Senior's PGA Championship; its tree-lined fairways and subtle undulating greens, present a challenge to even the most seasoned golfer.
Set in 270 acres of Cheshire's finest parkland and located one mile from the picturesque village of Prestbury, the tricky, well-guarded greens are broken up into two contrasting circuits of nine. The front nine, with its impressive backdrop of the 18th Century Hall, gently rolls over meadowland and offers the golfer many chances to make a score. The back nine winds through rich woodland and is a much more demanding test of golf.
Thanks to a £1.5 million refurbishment, the golfing facilities are second to none. Mid game, stop at the Halfway House for well-earned refreshments and light bites before taking on the last nine holes, or head upstairs to The Claret Jug restaurant at the end of your game and enjoy a cool beer and a hearty British classic.

Bedrooms are averagely decorated. Not adequately sized beds, very narrow, Bathroom requires updating, very tired looking. Staff require better training/supervision. We waited 30 mins for a coffee and bacon bun as the one staff member was not coping with orders. Having to leave the hotel, walk down the road to another building when it’s raining and windy to have dinner is a joke!! This is obviously to keep all golfers together! Not somewhere these 12 lady golfers will be going back to soon!!

Awful customer experience. Booked either the grill or claret and jug restaurant, got put in Barneys. Arrived at 7.20 and got given the wrong table, then took our drinks order - 8pm no drinks? Went and told them, no apology just came and re-ordered… food came out and was just put at the end of table for us to pass down … 8 people! The waiter said ‘pork’ for pigs in blankets… mains came 30 mins later which was simple (all burgers)… got to 9.15pm and started to clear the plates, we asked for desert and was told the ‘kitchen was closed now, the chefs had done - they couldn’t wait to get off’ - really? Got offered a free drink instead but no apology. Came from breakfast the next morning and the staff were just inattentive and dull (I can’t describe them in any other way, apologies) it was like they didn’t want to be there and we were an inconvenience to them. I work in the customer service sector and without customers you’d have no business - I definitely would not come back to Mottram Hall, that’s for sure.

Mottram Hall hotel, course and staff first class. However Your Golf Travel service was appalling right from our first call in April to arriving at venue the information and communication was non existent. Always going to ring back or email but never did we were kept in the dark about what was going on We would not use or recommend Your Golf Travel to anyone.

Room very dark and small. There’s no lift and the stairs leading to the rooms is very narrow and steep so good luck to old people with luggage. Food pretentiously described in order to make it sound “posh” making it expensive. The fairways are bumpy, not clearly defined between the semi rough and the actual fairways. The greens are terribly maintained. It looks like the main focus of the resort is the hotel. The back 9 is nicely designed and presented. The front 9 is like a simple plain field.

The staff did their best but possibly not enough of them. Evening meals took nearly 2 hours to get the starter. Can't understand why we could charge our room, had to pay for everything at point of purchase even though they'd taken the card details on check-in?? Room was good but certainly no better than others we've stayed in and despite being an all male golf weekend the rooms were made up as doubles not twins (Specifically requested this from Your Golf Travel at booking)!! Food was very good but too expensive for what you got, for the £35 allowance you'd have really struggled to get two course and a drink. Breakfast was very good however.

Nice hotel - good location and grounds. Standard rooms stylish but compact. The twin beds were very adjacent, I wouldn't want to share with someone I didn't know very well. Food was ok but for dinner we were put in Barney's bar which lacked atmosphere and the food/ service was pretty basic.Otherwise an enjoyable stay.

Very nice hotel in a great location, nice and quiet, the hotel was in the middle of a refurb not that it mattered to us so sure it will look great once finished. The staff were polite and friendly, the champagne bar offered a good range of drinks, nice choices at breakfast, the spa looked great but a bit overpriced if you wanted to use it as a golfer.

Where to start…. The hotel’s management need to take a serious look at themselves and the training they provide their staff. As a group of 8 men on a golf break our needs are quite simple. A nice round of golf, cold beers and dinner, and repeat. * Golf bar not open on arrival, opened about 11.30am * Golf bar closed after the round due to private function so we can’t get a drink * Check in takes about 30mins * Only bar open is the Champagne Bar but we are not allowed to sit inside as a wedding party has use of it for 90 mins. No draught beer so only a small fridge which means after one round of drinks our chosen beers are now served warm unless we switch and drink other drinks. * No room in the restaurant for us with one place closed for the private function the main grill restaurant is busy. Reception send us to the grill to sort it out ourselves as they don't know what to do. * Reception also told us if we wanted to watch England play in the world cup rugby we should go to The Bull down the road as their bar is shut * The beds were comfortable but facilities were not great * Internet ports in the room do not work so you have to rely on unsecured wifi * Toilet cistern takes minutes to fill leaving the room in a droning noise for 4 minutes after every flush * One person who spoke to a room cleaner had said about a blocked toilet and they were give the plunger to sort it themselves!!!! * No-one answer the reception phone when we try to call from a room. * I had to leave at 5pm on Sunday a day early because of an unexpected event so asked if they could bring my food (Burger and chips) early for me as we are sitting in the golf bar before a 4hr drive or can I get food and the answer was no !!!! I would never choose to stay at a Champneys Hotel if this is their view of a 4 star hotel. At best I would give it 2 stars.

Where do I start got to the room after a round of golf, none of the electric plugs worked no television, couldn't use the iron to iron clothes for next day for golf, couldn't charge phones because of the plugs, told reception staff couldn't help us as there was no maintenance man on site and they couldn't move us as it was full not helpful at all

Hotel and surroundings were stunning. The rooms were very hot with not much in the way of cooling apart from a tiny fan, and in one room we couldn't even open the window. The Bar staff were great, and the food was excellent. The services in the restaurant needs to be improved though, clearly all waiters/waitresses were inexperienced which lead to wrong orders and food/drinks not coming. When it did come though it was excellent.

✓26 May 2023
The Hotel was clearly going through a staffing issue and many of the bar/ restaurant staff seemed new and untrained. We booked the grill for the second night of our family golf weekend stay, rather than the golfers bar. Ordering eight meals, one person was finishing before the last person had been served. I also refuse to accept that the wine list reflected the general cuisine with the cheapest bottle at £48. ( just silly) Might pay that in a good restaurant. The Hotel is also getting tired and while some staff tried, it felt a bit chaotic. But the weather was great and the golf was fun.
Stephen
✓15 May 2023
Evening meal service was very slow and the breakfast service was an absolute shambles. Believe this was a problem with untrained agency staff. Our golf party of 20 waited over an hour to get a cooked breakfast and few of us just had cereal and left. Never experienced anything like it to be honest.
Stephen
✓15 May 2023
Very nice hotel which seemed to be suffering with a high staff turnover. Everyone who served us seemed to be working their first day and unclear how to perform their job. One additional point to highlight is that there appeared to be some disconnect between what the hotel believed we should be paying for the spa facilities and what we had been informed during booking by YGT.

Few problems on check in. We got to the room after meandering corridors for 5 minutes and found it so hot ( due to an 'uncapped off pipe under the room') we had to change to the other side of the building - so another 15 minutes. Receptionist at first did not have the booking then believed we were one night instead of two and then had no idea we were on a package. Room was ok- bit tired. Bedroom window only opens 3 cms. Not very generous with the bathroom products to say the least. Most annoying part of the stay was using the spa. My wife had a massage ( extra £105) and was told by reception to get a robe from the spa as there was none in the room. However, the spa said they didn't have any although were unpacking many from the laundry. So after the treatment she had to put here own clothes on top of the oils. She was then informed she could not go to the spa as it was not included in the package which was quite embarrassing as the spa receptionist announced it to the general public. We had no idea it was not included and yourgolftravel never informed us. ( I guess that was why she could nit have a robe. Very unprofessional and penny pinching The spa was very impressive The restaurant served good food. Our package gave us £35 towards dinner ( also not told about this when booking). Bar wasn't great. No draught beers but just a choice of 2 little bottle beers at £6. Wine in the restaurant very over priced for what it was ( 500% mark up). They obviously are more interested in mark ups than satisfaction. The male waiters were great especially the ones two from Bulgaria and Poland who made our stay- thanks) There was a manager who did not seem interested in the guests. Over all we would go back but best to book direct

Although I stayed in a standard room - it was basic, and the feeling was an upgraded would be needed in the near future. The overall experience was good. The spa was very nice; however, I was not in the system as having access and had to debate with the front desk on a daily basis. The worst part about the hotel was the service. A number of the staff were very poor, I called reception and the operator on a daily basis and the phone was never answered. The catering staff were very young and inexperienced, I believe they were contractors but had no idea how to take an order or get an order correct. This was the biggest let down. Breakfast was not laid out on time which I heard some people complaining about. I thought food / beverages were 10-15% over-priced, especially relative to London and being a 4star not a 5star hotel.

Arrived before lunch hoping to get a drink and something to eat before 12.50 tee off. There wasn’t a single cafe/ restaurant that could serve us with a meal before Golf so we all had to go up the road to the Co-Op. Our evening meal wasn’t much better, we were shovelled into the Claret Jug with another party of 24 with the chef running round like a headless chicken. Credit to him that he managed to get us all fed, there was no staff in a 4/5 star hotel. I don’t know why you use this hotel as it’s not doing your image much good

Can see how some give a 1 and some a 5. Our stay was not without issues. Given a double bed when should have been twin. Told it would be changed by night staff at 7pm but had to chase and it was 9.30pm before it was done and made to feel as if you were an inconvenience. Had wrong drinks and food served in the restaurant with little or no apology. On the up side the golf was good but overall Mottram Hall is not what it seems to be a top notch place to stay.

The busiest weekend of the year and no staff. Found it difficult just to get a coffee before playing golf. A chef who had come for a game of golf ended up serving us on his time off. Couldn’t get through on the phone for 4 days trying. Told that it would be £55 to use the pool. Needless to say we didn’t take our swim gear. £55 was for the full day. They didn’t tell us it would be £15 for a quick visit

Hotel is in a great location and all staff were really good and friendly, responsive. Our group thought the quality of food for dinner on the Sunday driver was very average and we lost count of how many times drinks were sent back - beers were always flat. Breakfast was dreadful, we had to provide times to the hotel to have breakfast to avoid being too busy but there was nobody checking any times or rooms - way too busy, food was cold, no coffee, small facilities for a large room, tables piled high with dirty dishes etc.

The staff were excellent and very helpful. The room was very cosy. Food excellent, but the wine prices were crazily expensive, but having said that we did not go expecting it to be cheap. One spoiler - the Claret Jug/half way house had no food such as a bacon sandwich before we went out at lunch time on Wednesday. On Thursday they could do a sausage barm cake if we waited for stock from the hotel. When it arrived, the bread was stale and unbuttered. 2 coffees and 2 stale sausage barms £19.60! We would still go again because the overall experience was good, just a few niggles.

✓30 Nov 2021
Double room was adequate enough for two people. The reception staff were attentive and helpful. There was a wedding taking place at the hotel and they had booked the bar also, which meant we were not allowed in the bar, only to order drinks, we were then asked to sit in a reception room to have the drinks. We were booked in the restaurant at 8pm which is when we arrived and were seated. It was then over an hour before our order was taken AND the order for drinks was given. We had to ask for this and if we didn't ask then I think we may be still sitting there now. The service in the restaurant is appalling. The overall cleanliness of the restaurant was poor, cutlery and glasses were not clean and the room itself needed a duster. It seemed we just needed to ask for everything. We didn't bother asking for desserts as we didn't want to wait. The food was OK but again no real value. Golf was good albeit cut short due to snow (that's not a moan) and there was a 3 hour power cut due to the storm (again, not a moan) - ironically the service level went up in restaurant during the power cut, when they offered sandwiches - the first thing they offered all night.

Our experience of the hotel was traumatic and shambolic. After being allocated a room and given the key, on entry we found the room already occupied !Back to check in apologies given and we were allocated an upgraded room. We had no sooner got in there and two people entered our room using a key !This time we think they were staff/cleaners who said they had left something in room ! They quickly left. A little later we did find in a cupboard a lanyard with a pass key on it. Several minutes later a knock on the door this time, upon opening we were met with a member of the housekeeping staff who apologised , she thought the room was empty, but she was looking for something, we gave her the lanyard and pass key, she said thankyou and left. We had a couple of conversations with Staff about matters, a bottle of champagne and a couple of complimentary drinks were provided, but the upset had already been caused . The restaurant dinner at night was excellent and we were looked after at this time. Just about the worst experience my wife and I have had in a Hotel !

overall a good experience just a few things that let the trip down, first disappointment was we checked in around 6pm after our round of golf to be told the only breakfast slot available was at 7am as all other times had been took by earlier check ins and we weren't playing golf the next day until 11.30, then the receptionist only other option was for us to have a bacon sandwich and coffee in the clubhouse before golf which the lads felt very offended by as we had full breakfast included in our trip, we then got squished in at 10am after a bit of moaning and then the next morning the restaurant was half empty so not sure what all the fuss was about really. The second issue was no draught beer only bottled beer which was warm delivery of draught beer not arrived for the weekend, How ever food was great

Unfortunately we had a room next to the deliveries entrance. ....5.40 am was not funny , also must be where the staff park , so what must have been late night staff leaving...2/3/4 am so had no sleep!! Good choice at breakfast. Meals in the Claret Jug were good.

Horrendous, didn’t sleep a wink, maybe grabbed a couple of hours due to geese and ducks, loads of them screaming all night, I would have thought the night staff would have shoo’d them away so it’s residents could sleep, terribly unpleasant. 3 times my room card didn’t work, room very small, food portions were tiny and lots and lots of children running riot in the bar until midnight. One bar man in the main bar all night made getting a drink tricky also. I will not be going back.

Hotel as expected, but a mix up over dinner booking - they hadn’t got us down. I’m afraid the course was in very poor condition - tees were a disgrace and greens very slow and uneven - I appreciate grass growth is prolific this spring, but it is clear that the greens team are not on top of things.

Great hotel and good leisure facilities. We ate in separate room near Claret Jug and food / service was excellent. Second night in hotel restaurant was a bit of a nightmare. Really busy, slow service and problems with new computer system. We were a large group of 36.

A long and testing course. Some bunkers raked and usable, some not. Greens ok. It is time to sort out the placing of ball washers and the pictures of a view of the hole: showing ‘dog leg’ etc. All these are placed on the white/yellow tees. There is nothing on the red tees except small markers with a tiny red marking on. To use these aids means walking back to white tees. Not always easy.

The first round we had torrential rain and still enjoyed the course, the next day the sun was shining and we played even better. I personally preferred the back 9 as the fairways are a bit more forgiving.

The course is a lovely parkland course. It was difficult enough to challenge us over the 3 rounds we played, but not easy enough to be boring. The greens were beautiful and the golf shop staff were really helpful

Course very tired grass on greens to long and made greens slow. Course was generally ok, back 9 better than front but overall course was in bad condition considering they only have one course to think about. Won’t go back

Good layout of course, the greens were a little slow but overall in good condition. The back 9 is very well thought out and a good challenge. Halfway house was closed on both Saturday and Sunday though? Putting green has 3 holes (?) and chipping green is a walk away over the 9th - other than those points a well kept course. The Sunday we flew round in around 4 hours, Saturday was close to 6 as the groups infront were slower. Expected at these places but not 6 hours! ☹️

Pro assistant friendly and welcoming. Greens are poorly maintained, bumpy, riddled with unrepaired pitch marks. I felt I’m better off playing in municipal course.,

The course would challenge every standard of golfer. The front 9 is very flat and open where the back 9 offers a harder challenge with more undulations and tighter fairways. Played in mid October and the greens were in fantastic conditions for the time of the year.

Well managed by friendly helpful Starter. Got us away ahead of time on both days. Good well stocked shop Some tees need upgrading but overall the right level of challenge for a mixed handicap group An overall air of ‘wanting to please’ by all Mottram staff

THe course was effectively two courses in 1. The front nine was suitable for most golfers not too hard and you could make some scores. The back nine was so much harder with at least 2 of the par 4 easily playing as par 5, no chance of hitting the green in two unless you're a pro (in our opinion). This knocks the stuffing out of the higher handicap golfers to say the least especially in the wet conditions!! Staff in the shop and half way house were very friendly and helpful. Starter had phone in sick so some people took liberties say a six ball being played with 3 buggies on the same hole.

Generally very good for a resort course. In good condition although fairways a little long. Greens moderately paced and ran true. Course flat and a little bland on the outward 9 but the back 9 contains some excellent and very difficult holes. Enjoyable and challenging.

Unfortunately due to the adverse weather we only got to play one of our two rounds but Sarah in the shop gave us wet weather vouchers to come back. Course was very wet so made it hard, especially as it plays long, greens were in good condition and pace of play was pretty good, looking forward to coming back.

The location and views of the course were amazing, the back 9 was very boggy but I assume that was down to the weather and location of the course, greens were not bad but not 10/10 but we did have an afternoon tee time so that may not have helped. Only thing that let it down was the driving range was poor and for some reason had a massive shortage of balls for it, waited an hour for 25 balls on the first day, but practice areas other then they were great.

The golf course is a nice layout with the front being flat but the back being more hilly and interesting. * Greens, Grass a little long but putted on reasonably well. * Fairways, Grass was a little long as it looked like they hadn’t been cut for a few days at least. * First Cut, Ridiculously long. The ball would be hidden by 2 inches in some places when you are 2 ft off the fairway. If you want the pace of play to be good you don’t need people to be looking for balls for 3 mins every other hole. It looked like either laziness or lack of staff to maintain the course properly in that area. * Air compressor not working so wet grass on trolley and shoes end up being in the boot of the car as they cannot be cleaned.

Loveley golf course, front nine a bit easier than the back but lots of hazards to make things interesting. The thick rough was a ball eater though, if you a mid/high handicapper take plenty of balls! Staff and services was excellent too.

Family golf trip, which we all enjoyed. The golf facilities and staffing was good. The back nine is a challenge if you are not a long hitter. The greens were ok but not the standard expected of a good venue. Overall it was a sunny weekend and everything looked superb and the golf was fun. The package was also good value overall
Stephen
✓15 May 2023
The pace of play was slow caused by the constant searching for balls as the rough just off the fairway was long. The fairways were also poor, no run because they hadn’t been cut and in parts it was hard to distinguish between the short rough and the fairway. The course is beautifully landscaped with some delightful holes but the overall opinion of our golf society is that they wouldn’t go back.

Golf course staff were excellent. Very good reception and the starter was very well organised. Pace of play was also pretty good. Back 9 is very difficult so it does slow down there. 2nd cut of rough is very long and thick but overall course was fair. Greens have serious issues. Most greens have bald patches and / or large section of black moss. They played ok to be fair but haven’t seen worse greens to look at in a long time. Setting is excellent overall and the value for money is okay. Having played wychwood park in a similar deal last year we’d definitely go to wychwood over mottram in the future.

We were a two ball and had no issues on the days we played. The back 9 is the harder but not impossible and in fact we enjoyed it more than the front. The course was in good condition. The only thing was the 19th hole staffing was scarce and in the end gave up and didn’t bother.

The course is good, front 9 is quite similar, back 9 more challenging. Fairways were in good condition, most greens in quite bad condition. Clubhouse sold no drinks or food/snacks at all without a prebooking which we weren’t aware of till too late.

Very wet, but only to be expected in February. The condition, in particular the amount of moss on greens we have come to expect from hotels with golf. Hotel management, (presumably not golfers?), penny pinch on the course.
Michael
✓30 Nov 2021
Overall condition of the course was excellent, given we played it at the end of November. The greens were excellent and the fairways and rough areas were well maintained. Staff in the pro shop were excellent too. The only real let down was the clubhouse, no food available as the chef had rang in sick. No alternative i.e. sandwiches were offered, only a pack of crisps. They wouldn't ask the restaurant to make anything either, assume they had another function on which, it seems, is to the detriment of all other guests.

The layout of the course was good and some really interesting holes. The tees were in a poor state and did not look like they had been cut for a while. Our experience in the Golf Club element was exceptional. The staff in the Pro-Shop couldn't have been more helpful ,particularly Sarah. Our time on the course was enjoyable, although on first day inclement weather curtailed round, but that was our choice, thunder was still rolling around in distance. On second day a buggy was provided without charge by pro shop . Our time on the course was enjoyable despite Hotel Shambles .

It’s a good walk for sure and a buggy does make a difference having done both. At £35 a buggy for one person works out rather expensive but it was a weekend away golfing and added to my enjoyment. Course was in very good condition, more so considering the conditions recently. Fairways were well manicured, well prepared and presented as were the greens. The rough was punishing but the fairways were wide enough that only the most errant shot was accepted. Greens were true, rolled well and accepted a good solid shot. Bunkers had been affected by the weather but the starter explained the situation fully and this alleviated any problems which may have arisen.

The tee's were a little but bare and some of the greens were spiked, but it is October and i understand that but apart from that the course was in brilliant shape considering the amount of rain that had fallen the day before we arrived and was still pouring on our 1st day. This is the second time myself and 27 friends have stayed and played at Mottram Hall and not one complained about anything, thank you all at Mottram Hall.
