The course has spirit of adventure and features 16 water hazards, reachable par 5’s, driveable par 4’s, and short holes that demand shot-making skills from wedge to woods.
Designer Jonathan Gaunt laid out a golf course that delivers risk and reward golf at its best. Water comes into play on 10 holes and there are nine doglegs on the card which demand good strategy and the ability to move the ball both ways if you are to score at your lowest.
The course is fair. The fairways are wide and generous and there is a conservative option available on every hole so that any standard of golfer can enjoy Ramside’s challenge.

The Cathedral Course has been built on rolling countryside between the villages of Belmont and Pittington with breath-taking natural features including ridges, becks and valleys.
The course extends out over a broad hilltop with views of Durham Cathedral and as far afield as the Angel of the North in Gateshead, before dropping down into a valley and rising up again to return to the parkland estate where its closing holes end back at the clubhouse and hotel.
The middle holes are laid out across a high plateau, previously called ‘Hilltop Farm’ - with wide-open skies and 360 views - then drop down into a striking valley with dramatic elevation changes, mature trees, steep banksides and a coursing beck.

Hotel was nice but lacked air conditioning on a really hot few days. The restaurant in the bar wasn’t sure what food we were having as part of our package and a member of staff used her fingers to pick up the chosen cakes for dessert which we found unbelievable, can you not get tongs in County Durham? When we asked if we could order wine with our meal we was told you can at the bar. The reception staff were friendly but could have offered more information about our eating arrangements. The spa was great and the staff friendly, it was really the restaurant that let the complex down, despite the food being pretty good.

The Hotel was exactly as advertised and provided all the facilities that you would expect of a Spa Resort. I was lucky enough to use the Pool on the Sunday Morning alongside the Jacuzzi, Steam and Sauna Rooms and it was gratifying that even as guests on a Golfing break, the facilities were free to use. (There was a 'premium' offer but I got to use everything I would care too)

First of all YGT should have the facility to rate the customer service, Craig has always been helpful and professional when booking our trips. Great stay on a golf Sunday stopover, everything was top notch, we missed the practice facilities my only problem was the beds were not firm enough. Oh and my golf could have been better!

Hotel is in a great location. Staff really friendly. Carvery very disappointing because they didn't reserve tables in the Carvery at 8pm for our party of 20 as arranged and confirmed with the hotel reception, I was told that they were too busy so we had to wait over half an hour to eat. Strange that they could seat a large party of gents at an earlier time. I took it up with the duty Manager who wasn't overly interested. A reservation is a reservation, very poor and unprofessional so I won't go back there.

Our visit was for 20 people stopping 2 nights & playing golf over 3 days on both the Cathedral Course & the Prince Bishops Course. We were well received throughout our stay & also had a visit from the Club Captain which was a nice touch. This was our 1st time at this venue but I'm sure it won't be the last. This hotel & facilities has everything you need or could wish for. The staff can't do enough for you & all areas were well supported with friendly staff. I personally didn't have time to visit the spa area but some of my colleagues did & they were very impressed. Rooms were well appointed & comfortable. Bars & restaurants were busy, but well staffed & the food was excellent. The Golf/Pro shop was well staffed & efficient on all 3 days with a good choice of golf clothing & accessories etc.

Lovely looking hotel and facilities. 2 min off Ai so easy access. Golf was good but unfortunately we had rain all day on sat. Was ok sunday. We thought cathedral was in bette4 condition then prince bishop quite a few holes with drainiage grooves across fsirway. Probably more intetesting holes on prince bishop. For what we paid as a package early can not fsilt it . But i wouldnt pay the prices if booked individually 7.5 to 8 out of 😅

Despite asking to be not given the crappiest room in the hotel ad we had booked through an agency. Guess what we got the crappiest room in the hotel. The room was one linked to another an was one usually used as a single. The dividing door was as soundproofed as a sheet of newspaper so would heard all the conversations mostly loud from the adjoining room. The sheets didn't fit the bed so rolled up in the night causing great discomfort. The beds were not even made properly and also dirty wine glasses were left unwashed. Also I asked the maid to make sure she topped up the tea and coffee. She didn't. The fusion resuarant food was abysmal. Do not eat there. The buffet and rottisery is a laugh in all the years I have stayed at this hotel the rotisserie has never been working.

A party of eight golfers enjoyed an overnight stay and game of golf at this fantastic resort. The staff were helpful and polite, the facilities top notch and the food excellent. Rooms very good, ground floor with patio door, very clean and tidy. At check in we were not provided with information regarding the hotel complex, in particular it wasn’t explained that you couldn’t sign for drinks etc to your your room. This came to light during the evening at the bar and in the restaurant when we had to pay cash. Apparently we should have been asked for a credit card, at reception, which would enable us to bill items to our room. This could not be done retrospectively. The evening food, in the carvery, was at best average, I guess it had been open for Sunday lunch and wasn’t at it’s freshest in the evening. Breakfast was a very good buffet. Staff were friendly and attentive.

This was an annual golf outing consisting of 18 members travelling from North of Glasgow and I must say that travel, directions etc were easy, with Ramside Hall very simple to find with or without SATNAV.
Ramside Hall Hotel boasts 2 golf courses; The Prince Bishop and The Cathederal and both courses were in good condition, especially considering they had been shut due to floods. Well done to the green keepers! I would argue buggies are a must on The Cathederal based purely on the distance between some of the tees. It is walkable but it still took 5 hours with a buggy so recommendedfor sure. The course layout was well structured and more than suitable for all abilities.
The Clubhouse / 19th hole was clean, tidy and all the staff were well mannered and polite, happy to chew the fat and have a banter which is always a plus. Prices were as expecteed and the 10% discount was applied in the Golf Club but not the main hotel, a minor failing that could be addressed!
Our package with 2 nights DBB and 3 rounds of golf offered unbeatable value and with 1 person free with 16 players, that meant even more prize money and further good value. The majority of the group have been attending annual outings since 2010, having stayed at Celtic Manor, The Belfry, Slayley Hall, Carden Park and one venue abroad and this was definitely in the top tier with an overall score of 9 / 10 and most members stating they would like to return in the future.
Several of the events listed above have been booked via Your Golf Travel and I cannot commend them enough. Great service, great deal, friendly, on hand for last minute changes…in fact so good I have today booked for next year!

Sadly the green keepers were very slow to clear greens whilst we were playing and we had to abandon 4 holes. They were surly ,ignored us ,and just told us to get a refund. The golf manager (Jo) was excellent though , apologised and we got an extra 9 holes in the afternoon for free which compensated for the first round . Have never encountered this before and were very surprised at the poor attitude to golfers on the course, I hope they put this right in the future as it has put us off coming back.

Nice course which wasn’t overly difficult, some lovely par 3s. We played on a day when it was 28 degrees, we wasn’t told that the half way house is shut midweek or that there wasn’t a cart going round offering refreshments, which was pretty poor considering the weather

Extremely disappointed with the course condition. From temporary greens and tees on numerous holes to a hole fully closed. Major upgrade works being carried out throughout the course. Hardly any signage to guide you round the put together course, couldn't use England golf app for the handicap etc. We were due to play this course 1st and 3rd day but cancelled the second round as it felt like playing a really bad municipal course. We had this trip booked for well over a year and were never made aware of this work going on. We would've been quite happy to play the Bishops course 3 times if we had of known of the condition. This trip was booked for a 40th birthday golf trip and it feels like we hardly played any golf. The staff onsite were helpful to try and arrange for us to play the Bishops course 3rd day but it was fully booked.

Told 2 holes weren’t playable! So we were ok with that but it turned out 4 holes were not playable and the walking to these make shift holes were shocking ! The rest of the course had loads of maintenance on as well (drainage) ! Most of the course should’ve just been shut as the construction vehicles were everywhere, really really DISAPPOINTED! Course should’ve be closed to public AVOID This course for the foreseeable

This Course needed a little TLC, un-kept / overgrown bunkers etc, but it was gratifying to see significant capital expenditure on the course in the form of remodeling a large swath of the course. The Course played fine, especially being so dry, but I will be interested to see how the remodeling goes next time. Also, the underulations on this course are not to be underestimated so use a buggy if not ready to walk up and down hills.

Certainly the better maintained of the two Ramside Courses, the Prince Bishop's Course offered a challenge to high handicappers like me but was enjoyable nonetheless. The one point I would make is that there a numerous drainage 'lines' which suggests in the Winter the course gets very wet but in the Summer it had a bad habbit of catching the ball so to speak. That said I loved playing the Course.

Strong winds proved the biggest test, the course was in reasonable condition given the dry weather and distance markers would be useful at 200 and 100 yards, not everyone has a distance measuring device.

David

Quite a difficult course when we played as there wasn’t any run on the fairways however they were in good condition. Some tee boxes were still on the winter mats but the greens in good condition. Only issue was that we couldn’t hire a buggy as it was too early in the season.

This course is too tough for older golfers. Lot of carry on some holes to reach the fairways. Also, some of the par 3s are long for older or higher handicap golfers (I am 24.5 and struggled). I believe that the Bishops course would have been more suitable

Great course with a range of different difficulty holes & challenges. Overall condition of the course was very good with fast greens & tricky contours. Most of the bunkers were under reconstruction at this time but I'm sure these will be great once complete. Water is present on quite a few holes & the rough very heavy if you missed the fairways. I would recommend a buggy on this course as there is a good distance between greens & the next tee.

What a JOKE of a round this was. I was playing in the first group, we got to the 5th tee box and the stakes were facing to the 7th hole. We rang the clubhouse to ask why and they said they must have been put in wrong, so we tee off down the 5th which is a long par 5, as we got close to the green we couldn't see the flag. Thinking somebody had left it on the floor i walked to the green to see there was no flag at all and then we looked at the 6th hole to see the same so we assumed the holes were closed even tho they were in 10x better condition than what were played on the other course. We played the 7th hole and when we got to the 12th hole we saw no flag again and the same on the 13th and 14th. We rang the club house again to then to be told that the holes were closed. We carried on to then get to the 17th an 18th to them to be closed aswel. The staff in the club house did not even apologise for not even telling us the holes were closed. We paid near £3000 to play the venue and there is no way the course should have been open as it was.
Richard
✓31 Mar 2024
Where do i start the conditions of the course was horrible, the whole 18 holes were like a swamp. We were sinking trying to take our shots the only dry part of the course were the greens which were in good shape. There was no way the course should have been open the amount of balls that were lost in the fairway due to them been like a swamp was ridiculous between the 20 players in our group we lost around 40 balls in the fairways it was a absolute JOKE when you are paying £4 a ball that we were playing with. We played Ramside last year and loved it thats why we went back but we will not be goin back again.
Peter
✓10 Oct 2023
The course was very wet, so our balls did not run far on landing, & often plugged, which made it difficult to find in the 3 inch long rough. It was difficult to play out of some wet bunkers, but otherwise the course was fair, & the greens were good, but not especially fast. No buggies were available after 1st October, but these would have damaged the course! The Sunday round took 5 hours & 15 minutes, but the Monday round took 3hours & 30 minutes!

Not what we expected we played slaley last year that is far superior. I found the greens quite small and not in particularly good condition no one seemed to be maintaining the course over 2 days the one thing which I have never seen before was 2 holes on each green one with the flag in and one which they hadn't bothered to fill in so if they couldn't be bothered to do that

I would say that the course was a difficult walk pulling a pull trolley due to wetness of the course. Very very muddy not in great condition. Greens ok for time of year. Spoilt the day as difficult to walk due to mud and water. Be warned very very hilly and in wet muddy conditions very difficult walk again I would say probably should have been closed.

Course was very very very wet and muddy if I am honest should have been closed. We had booked a buggy but could not use it as the course was so wet and muddy. Great layout. Would like to play it when it is playable. Difficult to walk due to conditions , tried to book an electric trolley as we could not use a buggy that we had booked. Had to pull a pull trolley that was extremely difficult in the wet muddy conditions. So overall not enjoyable.

Definitely the better of the 2 courses, longer and a good test of golf even for our mid and low handicaps. Some really good holes. Condition was decent for the end of September. It is a bit of a walk though so a trolley or buggy recommend. One let down was there was no half way house which given the hotel set up is a little surprising. A nice cold beer half way round would have been great.

First day very enjoyable, even though one hole was closed for drainage work. The second day disaster! When we checked in for our second round on this course we weren’t told that we had been moved to the Cathedral course because of a shotgun start competition was planned for 10:30 am. We had played five holes before we realised what was happening. By this time we had missed our changed tee times. We were given vouchers to return to play our missed round and free coffees as compensation for the mix up.

We played this course in March following a wet weather spell and the course was wet underfoot but playable. The green had been cored / spiked and were slow and not rolling smoothly, but this was expected at this time of year following a spell of bad weather. I would expect the green to be much better in the summer months. There are a few long walks between green to tee as the course is on two sides of a road linked by an "underpass". There are a few steep hills, so I would recommend buggies if your fitness could be better.

This course was another with quite a few dog legs and water hazards but was an easy walk and as with the Cathedral course was in excellent condition,it was easier test than the Cathedral course but it was more strategic and made you think about every shot,I would certainly recommend Ramside Hall for a golf trip as everything was first class.

✓4 Sep 2019
The course was a challenge for even single figure handicap golfers with a lot of blind second shots and dog leg holes with water hazards which were not easy to see on some holes, the course was in superb condition with greens that were not too fast and the fairways were some of the best I’ve played from, would highly recommend this place but would advise to get a buggy as it is long and quite hilly.
