Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort has been welcoming golfers to North West Ireland since 1893.
The original course at Rosapenna was laid out by Old Tom Morris with significant revisions by Harry Vardon and later Harry Colt in the early 1900's. The famed Sandy Hills, designed by Pat Ruddy followed many decades later and in 2021 the highly anticipated St Patrick's Links, designed by Tom Doak, now makes for an incredible links golf experience combined with an excellent 4-star hotel.
Set between two beautiful beaches the resort is the perfect venue for a golf break or just a quiet getaway in this beautiful corner of Donegal. Located in the seaside village of Downings, there are many local restaurants specialising in locally sourced Seafood as well as world famous public houses like the Harbour Bar and Olde Glen Bar.

The legendary Old Tom Morris laid out the original links that bears his name in 1891. On his first visit to the area, Morris was struck by the quality of the ‘golfing canvas', and before he returned home he staked out the guidelines for his superb creation. In the following decades, both Harry Vardon and James Braid provided amendments, to make the golf course the outstanding challenge that it is today.
With some 15 Open Championship titles between the three contributors, it should come as no surprise that the Old Tom Morris course is one of the finest in the north-west region. The greens are undoubtedly the highlight of the course, with Morris deeming the existing land so good that he only built 3 of the greens; all fifteen of the others are exactly as the land dictated.

The addition of the Sandy Hills course in 2003 has only added to Rosapenna's reputation. While Morris' course skirts the fantastic dunes, Pat Ruddy has crafted a monstrous tournament links that cuts through the sandhills of the incredible landscape, that so captivated Old Tom over a century ago.
Ruddy's masterpiece measures over 7,100 when stretched fully, but in line with modern design principles, a multitude of tees make it playable for golfers of all standards. With these two outstanding creations on an awe-inspiring stretch of turf, a golf break at Rosapenna is a truly magnificent experience.
Intensive golf clinics are available, with expert tuition from the resident PGA professional.

St Patrick's Links has quickly become a must play for all golfers. Designed by the famed Tom Doak, who has a wealth of award-winning designs ranging from Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand to Streamsong in Florida. The course enjoys an incredible landscape, already considered one of the best in North West Ireland it is bound to feature with The Top 100 Golf Courses in the UK and Ireland.
Reaching out from the edge of the Atlantic, St Patrick's Links is a spectacular golf course. The setting - on huge dunes, with high cliffs to one side and Sheephaven Bay to the other - is unlike anything in Ireland or elsewhere. Massive bunkers frame each hole and on some holes the views go on for miles and miles. There is little doubt that St Patrick's Links will go onto be recognised as one of the best links golf courses in Europe.

Massive suite, very large bath/shower room, clean comfortable. Like all hotels the duvet was too warm…que sera. Breakfast was very good, though the 7am start was tight for our 8am tee time, 15 minutes away (St Patricks). (Did not dine at the hotel.)

The hotel, the staff, the food and the golf courses were all excellent, we couldn't have asked for anymore.

Very nice stay. The hotel was generally very good. The food in the dining room was of a reasonable standard, but seemed a bit pricey for the quality and for the wine. The leisure facilities were only open for limited times. The afternoon times were 4.30 to 7.30. Seems rather limited compared to most quality hotels.

Played it twice, Saturday morning in very tough conditions, 25mph wind gusting 40+mph), light rain for much of the round. Spectacular use of the terrain, mounds and hollows on many holes, enormous and multi-sloped green complexes. Superb example of a links.

Played in the worst of Saturday’s weather, 30mph wind, gusting 45mph, into all through the first six, then skipped 10-13 and played in from 14. Hence course was not at all busy. Greens had been tined and dressed, but putted OK, but not as smooth as the other 2 courses just on this visit.

Weather was quite tough, 25mph winds, gusting 35mph. Luckily the course itself was the relatively gentle one of the three, less hilly, few bunkers (though some very tough ones!) and some semi-rough before the very difficult stuff in most places. Greens played very well.

Challenging course in spectacular setting. Much tougher than the other two courses - every hole a challenge once you get past the easy opening par 5.

Newness evident in very poor fairways, slow greens and hut for clubhouse! But layout very good and will be a very good course when it matures.

The first 9 particularly were a bit of a joke. Playing from the blue tees it was very difficult to figure out where to hit the ball. Having played Old Tom the day before, it suffered by comparison.

Excellent proper links. Good hole followed good hole. Difficult but fair. Really enjoyed by 8, 10, 19 and 30 handicaps.

What a fantastic course! Wonderful test of golf and fabulous scenery. We were lucky to play it in sunny calm conditions so we clearly haven’t experienced it at its most difficult! Only criticism is that for competent Lady golfers the tees are so far forward it feels like you haven’t quite played the course. I have described the round as slow but we were a two ball out after three balls so that is understandable.

A very enjoyable round of golf on this course. It was slow at times as we were a two ball out after a slow three ball. But dry sunny weather meant it was a pleasure to wait and look at the glorious scenery.
