Royal St Georges Golf Club is well regarded as one of the best golf courses in Kent. As an Open Championship venue that has seen a host of world-class Champion golfers claim the Claret Jug since it's 1st hosting of The Open in 1894.
Playing the course is something that all golfers should seek to do as part of a memorable links golf experience. As part of a very select number of Open Rota Courses, Royal St Georges is one of only three courses south of Liverpool that has held golf's original major championship.
Located less than 30 minutes from Dover and around 2 hours from Central London, this South East gem provides a fantastic treat for your next golf tour with Prince's Golf Club and Royal Cinque Ports also within 10 minutes.
Signature hole: Par 4, 4th hole
At 495 yards, the fourth is an intimidating prospect, especially when confronted with the towering bunker inset in the hill in front of the tee. Once on the fairway, the mid-iron approach will have to contend with a deep depression in the front-left quarter of the green. Golfers will try to hit their tee shot over the bunker on the right to open the green up but know that any drive falling short will find an impossible task ahead with one of the largest bunkers anywhere in the world.
Other notable holes include the par 5 14th hole with it's hazards including The Suez Canal ready to snare any downwind drives and Prince's Golf Club (being out of bounds) to the right. Something Dustin Johnson found to his peril as his 2nd shot went over the out of bounds stakes when chasing Darren Clarke in the 2011 Open Championship. The par-3 16th is short in distance but high in challenge which Denmark's Thomas Bjorn with testify to. His challenge for The 2003 Open Championship ended here with a double-bogey seeing him fall short of Ben Curtis in claiming The Claret Jug. With bunkers surrounding the green and slopes pushing any offline shots into the sand, it is easy to see why so many struggle on this excellent par-3.
Kent's finest is rightly heralded as one of the jewels in the crown of British golf, and any player fortunate enough to visit will surely understand why St. George's receives such mighty plaudits. The driveway and the clubhouse offer an insight into the austerity and tradition that are inherent to the club, but it is not until you follow the opening fairway into the myriad of towering sand dunes that St. George's reveals its true character.
The magical holes are carved through the mounds and hills, offering a fantastically diverse challenge; the bunkers are deep and steeply revetted, the rough is extremely punitive, and the magnificent undulating greens are immaculate. The outward nine is the more picturesque, while the closing stretch is one of the most demanding in world golf, presenting a truly unique challenge. The golf course is combined with rich history and tradition at St. George's, which is one of life's most memorable golfing experiences.

Really enjoyed playing at another one of the open venues. The course was brutally tough in difficult conditions, but that was to be expected. Course played was very difficult but it was in great condition. Staff were all very helpful, friendly, and chatty. I like the way they only play 2 balls on that day so there are not hold ups in play. Strangely, I didn’t find it as ‘grand’ as say Carnoustie or Loch Lomand, but that’s not to say it wasn’t still a great course.

It’s number 1 in England for a reason, loads of freebies on arrival and the staff are super friendly! Shout out to David our caddie for the day

Great experience, all the staff were so welcoming and helpful. The greens had been worked on, but you expect that in late October (they were very slow, but true) - overall could not fault and felt like good value for money

Up there with one of the best courses ive ever played. They had done winter works on the greens a few weeks ago, so they were average

Really fun but challenging course. Onsite golf course staff was excellent and made the experience even better. Half way house could be better, especially the toilets were disgusting.

Absolutely loved it! Played in a howling gale with showers on the back nine , but two birdies helped make up for conditions.

We had a frustrating round at St George's. I would advise getting a caddy, as there is little to no help in terms of course management. Each hole has blind shots, no target markers, no direction from green to next tee, no yardage markers from 150 out

What a course, clubhouse and totally all round experience. This place is special and you feel welcomed from the moment you get there. Course is amazing and more undulating than you first think. Great holes and knowing so many great golfers have walked the fairways makes it an experience to remember

Best golfing experience of our trip. Everything was perfect, even the weather. Mark, our caddie, did a great job at sharing its knowledge of the difficulties of the course as well as sharing the histories of previous Open. Clubhouse and Pro shop are a must.

Although I scored better on this course than Prince's, we all preferred the latter. Make no mistake, this is a great golf course and we enjoyed relatively benign conditions. The greens were not always consistent which was an added challenge. The staff in the pro shop, caddy master, starter and terrace bar were all very helpful and friendly.

Lacked the WOW factor on arrival ! Clubhouse was underwhelming for me ! The Pro was a little pushy trying to get us to hire a caddy ! We said we didn’t want a caddy he said ‘Good Luck’ which I thought was a bit rude ! Course was brilliant with its condition and history ! Great starter on first tee

First time I’ve played this legend, I was told it was tough. It delivered. A caddie is needed. The history and tradition is fantastic. The carvery is very good too. Jacket and tie required

What an experience! Playing an Open track is special. For us walking in the footsteps of Morikawa and Darren Clarke was awesome. The course is tough, I mean TOUGH, but you'd be disappointed if it wasn't The clubhouse was spooky quiet for our visit, but worth the effort of jacket and tie Only slight downside for us was the greens weren't brilliant

Had a great experience. Caddy is a must and well worth the cost. Greens had just been treated ready for winter but this didn’t spoil what was a good day and great experience.

From the moment you drive up to the clubhouse you know you are in a special place. You are welcomed by the caddie master with warmth and not a touch of stodginess. Same with the pro shop staff and starter and the caddies made everyone's round extra special. The bunkers--just such a thrill to get up and down out of them on occasion. Hard to avoid so best to sharpen your sand game.

Royal St George's is an amazing experience to play. I'm glad I've done it, with The Open playing there next year. They recommend hiring a caddy and I would say it is definitely needed to help you plot your way around. Our caddy was Bob and he was so helpful, giving us the lines on the green and where to place your shots going into the green. The condition of the course was perfect!

Had a great caddie. Need to have a tie, coat and dress slacks for entry to main club facility. After round drink in facilities was outside. Great round. If you never played a links course before, here you need a caddie. Lots of fun. They were making changes to the course, but still lots of fun. Would love to play it again.
