Sandford Springs Golf Club makes great use of its enviable location to offer a trio of superb 9-hole courses – The Park, The Wood and The Lakes – all are distinctly different and provide great enjoyment.
Located between Basingstoke and Newbury, the course was laid out by Hawtree & Son (founder members of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects). The original 18-hole were officially opened by Sir Nick Faldo and Bernard Gallagher OBE in 1989, the final 9-holes were finished in the summer of 1991.
The signature hole is the 9th hole on The Park Course – a short downhill par-4 which requires an accurate long iron from the tee followed by a good approach to a putting surface which is guarded by two lakes. However it is possible for the long hitters to carry the 270 yards over water!
With its mature trees creating a naturally scuplted challenge, accuracy is required to negotiate the avenues of The Woods, arguably the most difficult of Sandford Springs' three nines.
Strategy, placement and ball-striking are all examined fully on the Park, which, upon climbing to its highest levels, is commonly buffeted by strong prevailing winds that help make it more of a links test.
The water is everywhere at The Lakes! The opening four holes provide a tough start to any round - be it your initial induction or when commencing the back nine.
The accommodation at Sandford Springs Hotel was recognised and awarded a 'Trip Advisor's 2020 Travelers Choice' award thanks to the spacious, peaceful atmosphere and staff that go above and beyond for their guests. There are 40 rooms at the hotel, all with en-suite bathrooms presented in a 4 star fashion.
Perfect for all size of golf group visiting Sandford Springs Golf Club, the hotel has twin and double rooms, interconnecting rooms and a suite with all the modern day amenities you would expect including TV, Wifi and aircon.
Not only do the bedrooms look over the golf course, but the restaurant and bar provide unique panoramic views of the golf courses too.

Rooms are separate from the bar and restaurant. It’s a very dark walk across the car park to get there. There is a restaurant in the hotel but any golfers have to eat in the large function room off the bar which totally lacks atmosphere. We were a group of 4 and put on a table too big so we couldn’t talk easily across the table. If we’d known we weren’t eating in a proper restaurant we would have stayed. We had to pick food on arrival (ridiculous when we were only 2 couples). Choice limited.

✓22 Aug 2025
We were extremely well looked after by the staff at the resort. Rooms were a good size and nicely decorated. main meal in the evening was amazing, with beautifully presented food and a good choice of staters, mains and deserts. Breakfast was a little lacking in choice, most of the party would have liked to see more prepared fresh fruit options .. may be not so much of an issue for a party of men. breakfast room was busy at certain times, but staff were helpful in reserving a table for us when we had an early tee time.

Hotel was very comfortable but had No bar. Breakfast very good. Bar Staff in golf club very helpful and made the weekend perfect for us. Meal was in the Golf Club restaurant not the hotel, was very good food with selection on limited menu, and the supplement of only £35 per person for the meal was in the small print and the agent at Your Golf Travel did not make this clear before booking.

While we were there the hotel breakfast room was closed for some sort of refurbishment/works. Breakfast was therefore in the golf clubhouse. Whilst this in itself was no problem it was just a bit of a pain returning to the hotel to get your golf stuff before the round. Comfortable large rooms though and would say that the rooms are up amongst the best of the golf ‘resort’ hotels we’ve stayed in.
Shaun
✓11 Sep 2024
An excellent location with stunning scenery the 3 9 hole courses certainly present a challenge, even for the lower handicappers. All of the courses have an element of water an ditches with some quirky par 3's. The hotel is very comfortable & clean, the restaurant, bar & clubhouse are also very good. Food superb. Only one minor criticism is that the menu was the same for both days, however there was plenty of choice.

A good hotel. Adam from the pro shop welcomed us well and explained our package. He also checked in on us day two. Jane in the bar and restaurant was an absolute superstar. Please would you pass this on to the hotel. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she is a credit to the organisation. I own a customer experience business and she would have scored top marks, and more. Really enjoyed the stay.

Generally Good but air conditioning failed on both nights I stayed there including the day the uk recorded the highest temperature ever! I spent a miserable sleepless night and there wasn’t even a fan in my room on the first night. I was particularly disappointed that the hotel did not offer any compensation for my very bad experience - such as a discount off my next stay.

✓22 Jul 2022
We stayed at Sandford Springs in 2019 and knew how good it is but this time the food in particular was even better. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed although a few of our party had a room with broken Air Con which considering we stayed during the two hottest days of the year was disappointing.
Gillian
✓21 Jul 2022
The hotel accommodation was clean & comfortable although the air conditioning one of the rooms our party occupied was not working. Unfortunate on the hottest days ever. Staff friendly and helpful. Whilst breakfasts were good the evening meal was the biggest disappointment- choices were not very inspiring or tasty. Overall we enjoyed our visit but the evening meal menu needs reviewing.
Allan
✓13 Jul 2022
Overall the location of the Hotel and the golf facilities are excellent. The rooms are of a good standard. Nothing bad to report. We ate in the clubhouse. We understand the catering staff were limited and although the food was acceptable it was not as good as in previous years. For those that had the beef-burger we all felt it was a big chunk of meat with very little flavour. It was not good. This is our only complaint however and not bad enough to make a fuss.
John
✓4 Jul 2022
The rooms were very spacious and clean. Only breakfast was available in the hotel, lunch and evening meals were served in the golf club bar which was away from the hotel. Menu choices were limited (with the same menu on alternate days), food was overall quite disappointing.

We enjoyed our short stay at Sandford springs. The course was in excellent condition and played well. The staff were efficient and polite. We did think the facilities were a little basic. Rooms, service and quality of food excellent. However I didn't pick up in the small print only a 2 course meal. Had to have starter & main and pay extra £5 for a dessert. Also the restaurant was at the clubhouse. Fine if a dry evening, not so good if cold and raining.

✓10 Jun 2019
The hotel is ideal for a short golf break. The rooms were large, well appointed and very smart - no bath but the shower was excellent. There is a small gym but no other facilities. This was an absolute pleasure, beautifully appointed rooms, clean& tidy with a fantastic bed and shower room. We all slept very well here. The food was great, service good and value for money. This was my fourth visit to Sandford Springs, this time with a party of forty. I was very nervous of keeping that many happy. Not a problem. No one could fine ant faults to speak of. Food, rooms, staff were all rated very highly. The courses,3x9holes, were also highly recommended by both low and high handicappers. One gentlemen said he go as far as to say it was his most enjoyable holiday ever!
Mick
✓15 Jan 2015
Apart from the weather on the final day, which is obviously out of everyone's control, our trip to Sanford Springs was a great success.
Our group consists of a wide range of
handicaps, from single figures to mid twenties, but all were catered for with
three 9 hole loops, each with different characteristics. The condition of all
three courses was excellent, with undulating fairways and greens to test any
level of golfer.
The staff throughout the complex were very welcoming and helpful, providing
polite and quality service during our stay.
The only thing lacking was thelack of additional leisure facilities, such
as swimming pool, sauna and in the bar area, pool/snooker table etc...
The hotel was exceptionally clean and the rooms were very well equipped. The
food was excellent too, with a varied choice for both the evening meal and the
breakfast.
Overall the consensus of the whole group was that this is a great venue and one
we would all happily return to at some point in the future.
Finally, I would like to thank you and YGT for the professional approach to
helping people like myself in organising golf trips for groups of varying
abilities and making the experience as easy as possible.

Jan
✓26 Sep 2025
The 8 minutes gap between groups was not enough. Especially that a lot of people were new to the course. Our round took 3 hours over 9 holes. The following 9 holes on the Wood took us just over 2 hours, because 2 teams in front let us play through while they were in halfway house. It would have taken us 6 hours otherwise. Not happy.

Quite hilly, challenging in places, tricky greens and picturesque. Again recommend an electric trolley or a buggy.

A nice course, we played in couples with varying handicaps, there was enough challenges for both lower and higher handicappers. Quite hilly in places, recommend and electric trolley or buggy.

In my opinion probably the weakest 9 holes out of the three, however you still have to think your way round Greens again too slow.
Nigel
✓14 Apr 2025
For me personally this is the best 9 holes out of the three. Some testing holes shame about the greens being too long.
Daniel
✓8 Apr 2025
Lovely course with some really tough and also stunning holes. Greens are a challenge and not in the best of condition but still very playable. Really hilly so buggies would be advised although these are very pricey at £40, likewise the halfway house is a rip off (£4.50 for a bottle of coke).
Daniel
✓8 Apr 2025
The course is very picturesque as well as challenging and overall in very good condition. The greens are very tough (which is a positive) but they could be in better condition. Would love to play again in the future

The lakes course was our back nine. It was 29deg and humid so that made the climb between two of the holes rather tiring! Overall the lakes course was varied and interesting.

Really enjoyed the golf. Played the 3 nine hole courses twice. Pace of play was mixed; most times one nine hole was slow and the next was quiet so much quicker. Lots of hazards makes play interesting.

The course suited us well so no complaints. It isn't the best course and the condition of the fairways on the "Woods" was quite poor. However, it was relaxed and the hotel, staff and overall stay compensated for any shortfall in fairway quality. Overall I would recommend this venue unless you are a low handicap golfer and looking for a top quality golf course.

Very hilly Needed buggies as also very hot 🥵 but none available . Some of group didn’t bother to play it which was a shame . Probably wouldn’t use this 9 holes again unless buggies guaranteed Excellent half way hut ( fir all 3 courses) and time is allowed to stop at it

As Hotel guest very frustrating having to wait until 1200 to T off, priority to members, observations shows many empty T Slots 10 people could have used. 4 1/2 hours Plus for rounds is not good for good golf

✓31 Jul 2022
Having the variation of the 3 nine hole courses meant that it felt like a different course each day. The course was not overly long but suited our high handicap ability perfectly but I'm sure it would be a good test for much better players as well.

Got stuck behind a medal competition on the Woods course which was very slow but the staff in the club house switched us to the Parks course and we then speeded up considerably so that flexibility was much appreciated
Alan
✓22 Jul 2022
We played in the very hottest conditions our Country has experienced, so this did influence the rounds of golf, especially for those of u who had never played there before. Given the extreme heat, I thought the Club would have sent a cart around with water.
Basil
✓22 Jul 2022
We played Woods/lakes on day one. Woods is a particularly demanding 9 and in the very dry conditions even good shots often bounced left or right under the trees. On day two it was Lakes and Parks. Much better scores on the two easier 9s. The pro shop was very helpful and welcoming. Given how hot it was we had expected to buy more drinks at the half way hut however it closes early. Given the extreme temperatures the course was in excellent condition and the greens were very fair. All things considered we had a great time.
Gillian
✓21 Jul 2022
Interesting 3 nines which we all enjoyed playing. Extremely hot during our visit but we managed to book some buggies in advance which enabled us to play. Pro shop helpful in changing some tee times. Half way house a good facility.
Allan
✓13 Jul 2022
I have put slow above but this only applies to the Sunday which took over five hours. It was a busy day with the club champs and other visitors. The Monday however was very quiet and we were just under four hours. It therefore depends on the day! The three nines are perfect for a few days away. The Lakes and The woods being the best. No complaints about the condition of the course and greens.
John
✓4 Jul 2022
The courses (3 nine holes) were very different and a good test for all abilities. The buggies were very expensive considering we were staying for 4 rounds of golf.
Ian
✓2 Jul 2022
Our second visit here and the greens were in better condition than last time they were really fast. We all play off 23/28 handicaps and the course is very difficult for us but enjoyable.
Nigel
✓1 Jul 2022
Our first round was played on a gloriously hot day, but the three 4 ball groups in front of us were so terribly slow, that after four hours we had only reached hole 12 and we walked in. The next day was fine, round complete in just over 3 hours.

✓22 May 2022
We recently played the parks ( which we both enjoyed ) , and the woods ( which were not so positive - very hilly and more blind tee shots and a lot slower - we were waiting on every tee). Overall impression- a good venue for both a day trip and overnight stay.
Martyn
✓18 May 2022
Ive said Average difficulty, but I would say for those over 20 handicaps it might be rated as hard (esp the woods 9). 3 loops of nine meant we played 1 set of nine twice and 2 sets once, which made for a nice mix. Star of the set up is the Woods especially around 13-14-15 with the rhododendrons in flower was beautiful as well as challenging. Greens in really good condition (better than my home course!). 1 area where improvement could be made would be the bunkers, a strange grey sand which when wet (and it was very wet when we played) turned into a cement like consistency.
Barry

✓15 Apr 2022
Really enjoyed the course which was generally in good condition. Some of the winter tees were a little rough but they were certainly better than playing off mats. We were a group of mid to high handicap golfers and everyone felt that the course was very fair. Challenging greens but generous fairways made it a good experience for all
Giles
✓13 Apr 2022
Good variety in the 27 holes. Greens were good and apart from a few winter tee boxes still in play the course was in good condition.
Phil
✓3 Apr 2022
Three excellent 9 hole loops providing a real challenge particularly with many long par 4 s. Several signature holes make this a must for any golfer to play. My only adverse comment is that the course is very busy and being three 9 hope loops could make it slower.
Oli
✓15 Mar 2022
3 set of 9 holes all a bit different. The group I took was mid to high handicappers and all managed some good scores (in tough conditions). There is more than enough of a challenge if you’re a lower handicapper. Fair but interesting with lakes, layout and a good mix of holes. Rained before our trip and on the first day, however, greens were superb! True and fast despite the weather. Special mention to Adam and the other pros who were quality and look after our group as well as being super accommodating. Don’t often re-visit the same venue for a coaching break but will be coming back again.

The course was in very good condition the greens were fast and consistent on al 27 holes. The rounds were well organised and we were able to play all three courses which were all different challenges. The last 9 holes were a bit slow but it did not detract from our enjoyment of the course.

✓1 Nov 2019
We played three rounds at the end of the wettest October known but were lucky enough to have selected three dry (but cold) days! The biggest problem for us was the amount of leaves on the first and second cut, which made finding balls quite frequently very difficult but we fully appreciated that 'leaves' can always be a nuisance this time of year. However, the ground-staff's use of a blower could have made things better, but there was no evidence of use. The greens were good, giving respect to previous weather conditions - the course consisting mainly of very long par four's which played impossibly long. The 'Park' nine attracted some criticism for being wide, somewhat bland and generally unexciting to play but overall and with due allowance for the time of year, it was an agreeable experience to play.
Peter
✓21 Oct 2019
Despite the amount of rain in previous days, indeed weeks, the course was in superb condition and a credit to the ground staff. We were lucky to have 3 mostly dry days.
Stuart
✓18 Jul 2019
Beautiful laid out three nine courses, the Parks, Woods and Lakes. We found the Parks the easier of the three nines, and the Woods the hardest, not as much water on the Lakes as we thought there would be. Greens on all three courses were superb, ultra fast and true. Fairways and tees also excellect. All my group would definitely go back to Sandford Springs to play, as we all thought this was one of the best courses we have played.
Alick
✓17 Jul 2019
Three very different 9 hole courses each having some interesting holes. Our group of 4 all enjoyed playing the various combinations and are planning to return to Sandford Springs soon.

Stuart
✓16 Jul 2019
With 3 different start points you don't get stuck behind others for long, and vice versa. Some tricky holes but course isn't massively long. Greens in excellent condition.
Neil
✓14 Jul 2019
being 3 nine holes there were some hold ups going from 9 to 10 but on the whole the staff did their best to keep things moving. we thought the greens were good and fast but could use some extra water in the current weather.
Tina
✓6 Jul 2019
The courses are well kept = lovely greens, if a bit fast, and beautiful flowers around the tees. Lovely wide fairways but some well placed bunkers. Well organised with a starter to see you all off and a halfway house. Will definitely return.
Pauline
✓29 Jun 2019
3 excellent 9 holes. The Park was the easiest with a wonderful finishing hole. The Lakes didn't have as much water as the name suggests, but a couple of par 3s over water. The Woods was the most challenging. Hilly and undulating. Overall the courses were in excellent condition.
David
✓10 Jun 2019
To clarify above remarks we were playing in four balls and all combinations of the 27 holes were completed in under 4 hours. The organisation of linking the 3 nines was superb. Not overly long and nicely undulating without being too hilly we had a very enjoyable 3 days. We will be back.
Les
✓20 May 2019
We arrived on Friday, staff very good organised and pleasant. Played in the afternoon ,had a bit of rain but the course handled it well. On the Saturday round the course was over subscribed with the tee booked all morning. Tee at 12:15 We packed up after nine holes as it took 3 hours , lots of lost ball searching in matches in front of us, at that rate we wouldn't have finished till after six! and we had homes to go to.
Tom
✓7 May 2019
The woods and the lakes are good but the park course is a bit boring. this course is priced at the top end and i didn't think it was worth it. if it was priced in the middle it would be allowed

✓18 Apr 2019
We went with a group of 10 people Every one had one of the 9 holes courses as a favourite, The lakes being the best , All three courses played well and it made a change to have three different courses to play over the 3 rounds and two nights Would recommend
Paul
✓26 Sep 2018
In good weather we would have given this a 5 but due to the hot summer many fairways were pretty rough with burnt grass/no grass. We arrived after 2 days of torrential rain including our 1st day. However the pro-shop staff were very accommodating and managed to put our Tee time forward so It was not pouring down by the later time. No buggies day 1 but by day 2 the course had drained well. A great combination of 3 x 9 hole layouts, our favourite was the "Woods" followed by the "Parks" courses. But play all 3 if you have time. Overall a great find and we've unanbimously voted to return next year!
