2 Nights, 3 Rounds
In typical Donald Steel fashion man made water hazards on the course are scarce and instead he uses the natural layout of the land to create a challenge for golfers. The narrow fairways and small green make are designed to challenge not only a player’s physical ability but also their course management capabilities as a lack of length has been substituted for tricky greens and minimal bail out areas off the tee. However, the lack of length means that the course is manageable for golfers of all handicaps meaning that enjoyment for your whole group is guaranteed.
In the past, Steel has been commissioned to advise on alterations to every course currently on the Open Championship rotation, which is a testament to his reputation within the design industry. The beautiful course weaves its way through the glorious landscape and gifts players with some incredible vantage points from which the stunning scenery can be observed.
Signature hole: par 3, 8th hole
The par 3, 8th hole is the renowned as Shrigley Hall’s signature hole and you will not disagree with this upon playing the course. The short par 3 measures in at 158 yards from the white tees and plays slightly downhill. The green is set back amongst the beautiful trees that inhabit the peak district meaning accuracy is imperative if you want a chance of making birdie here. The putting surface also has another defence, as well as trees flanking it there is also a small water hazard in front so club selection is key when looking to find the green on this short but testing par 3.

A return visit, good exactly as per previous years, on this occasion we were required to pre order food, previously we have selected from main menu with a potential supplement for those who wanted steak etc, this was not offered, otherwise very good

Very good golf course in great condition. Hotel is a little “tired” and in need of decoration but room was clean and comfortable. Nice bar location. Food was poor and 2 of our party were ill all night after dinner with very upset stomachs.

Loved this hotel. Historic main building with modern rooms. Staff were accommodating and friendly. Would stay longer next time and make use of the spa facilities.

The food was excellent and the restaurant service was very good, which made dining an enjoyable experience. The golf course was fantastic and a real highlight of the stay. Unfortunately, the bar closed too early without any notice, and the sports bar was quite dire in both atmosphere and offering. The room itself was adequate but would certainly benefit from an update. Changing and locker facilities were very poor and rather depressing, which was disappointing given the otherwise impressive setting. The general areas appeared to lack effective management, and maintenance overall was noticeably poor. Despite these shortcomings, the hall itself is truly magnificent and has the potential to provide a first-class experience with some much-needed attention and investment.

Hotel was generally good, although back of house areas and corridors could do with some attention. Rooms were fairly basic but ideal for a golf weekend. Food was very nice and not too expensive. Overall a good stay.

Day 1, whilst the weather was shocking, hail and rain the course coped with it, very enjoyable for hardy golfers, Day 2, heavy rain, hail, high winds and grim conditions, to be behind a four ball that took 40minutes for hole 1 and over 3 hours for 9 holes reduculous, not wanting to take another 3 hours for the next 9 called it a day, still good crack with friends and went home for a bath to dry out,

We were given a 3pm tee time on arrival day which is too late to get round 18 holes. Buggy expensive for the restricted use we got from it but liked the gps screen. We found this course challenging as beginner golfers but it had good vibes and was very different and you knew you were in the Peak District!

The course itself was fairly short but lots of walking between some tees and it was very Hilly. The course is tough and the greens were in great condition but due to the slopes they were fast which made it harder still. Overall of very nice course with all holes requiring your attention.
