St Mellion is arguably the premier golfing destination in the South-West, boasting two championship courses, and has welcomed the European Tour's elite on no less than six occasions for the Benson and Hedges International.
Opened in 1987, the Nicklaus Course at St Mellion was the Golden Bear's first project in the UK, and to this day Jack rates it as one of his best creations. The £2.5 million investment now complete was overseen by the Nicklaus design team.
From the championship tee markers the course measures 7,019 yards and is a thorough examination, but there are tees to suit golfers of all abilities. The Nicklaus is typical of its designer's architectural ethos, with a premium being placed on finding the correct position from the elevated tees in order to attack the flags. Inaccuracy will be punished severely by the strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards around this South-Western gem.
Did you know? Jack Nicklaus speaks highly of his design, going as far as to say St Mellion is 'potentially the finest golf course in Europe'.

Formerly known as the Old Course, St Mellion's Kernow is often in the shadow of Jack Nicklaus' creation next door, but it is a fine championship layout in its own right. Though not particularly long by modern standards - the Kernow measures 5,782 yards - there is no shortage of challenge and intrigue.
A major face-lift has seen the addition of new lakes and bunkers, plus some totally rebuilt putting surfaces. Spectacular scenery surrounds the course, whose highlights include the short 12th, where the green is guarded closely by water, and the memorable par-4 closing hole which demands two excellent strikes.

The lodges are within easy reach of the clubhouse, and guests can eat at the Brasserie if the exertion of cooking is too much after a day on the course. We stayed from the red August for 2 nights. The hotel and staff were lovely. Very helpful. Access to your room was very easy via the multiple entry points from the car park. Very handy if you wanted to keep your clubs in your room. The food was great and the staff engaging, especially the maitre d’ who so professional and thoughtful. Thank you.

Reception excellent. Room fine, bit cold but nothing the air con couldn’t rectify. Nice big bath and simple shower, plenty powerful enough. Wonderful view of the 18th Breakfast marginally chaotic, no butter - it’s on the way, no scrambled eggs - they are on the way and a desperately slow toaster but good coffee Dinner was actually very good as was the service. My only complaint was, as the Organiser, they came after me for payment of outstanding extras - didn’t realise I had to do their job!

We found all staff very friendly & helpful in both hotel & golf shop. Rooms were well furnished & bed very comfortable. Shame not to have a fridge in room but coffee/tea making well stocked. We all enjoyed our meals, the dishes at dinner were beautifully presented & delicious. Shout out to the delightful Emily our waitress on the first night who was extremely good so friendly & helpful.

What a dump!! The room was absolutely filthy - the shower didn't work without scalding ourselves, twin beds not a double, the bathroom was disgraceful. The food (which was part of the "deal") was atrocious. We paid for 2 nights (left after one), paid for two breakfasts (didn't have any), paid for 2 evening meals (had one and then only two courses having sent back the first two courses), only played the Kernow course and didn't play the Nicklaus at all. We checked in at 1.30 on Tuesday and left at 6.30 the following morning. What an absolute rip-off and YGT need to take a good look at yourselves for advertising this disgraceful "resort" as a go to golfing experience. We will be seeking a refund.

Everything was excellent, however, I received an email advising me about a bill I had to settle before I left. The bill was in excess of £1700. I was shocked at this amount and I queried the bill at reception. After about 20 minutes waiting, the lady came back and the bill was revised to £1100. No explanation nor an apology was given what happened. As I was about to tee off, I could not wait for a reason and had to leave. Would appreciate an reason as if I did not query the bill, I would have charged my group a lot of money for no reason.

Accommodation was very run down. Changing rooms were poor condition and men’s hand dryer didn’t work and was totally rusty. 4 of us eat lunch before our round - first meal came out 20 mins earlier than other 3 and last one was wrong order. Dinner took 2.5hrs in total with starters taking 1hr to come out. Complete joke. Everyone complaining. Shower in room was not very hot and went cold and hot both times. All buildings run down with what appears to be no maintenance spent on them. Hired set of clubs and first round the driver head was rattling and second round we hired it’ll the head came off completely on the second tee and obviously couldn’t be used. Very disappointing overall and did not get value for money.

He was great from start to finish and even after us having to rebook for the past 2 years it was worth the wait. The one thing that let the scores down is the general apathy of the staff. I felt there was little to no interaction from the reception or restaurant staff, Another major problem was lacking of seating in the bar .Two of our party had to stand for the whole of the evening . This certainly impacted my scores.

Real disappointment. The staff are great but not enough of them. The rooms are 2 come 3 star, not 4 star. The corridor carpets tired. Long waits for food and drink. Breakfast buffet is a farce. Big societies so lack of food, and very cramped area to serve yourself. The cold buffet should be switched round. Think st mellion has decided to focus on big societies and low standards. Shame

Hotel is tired, particularly the bathroom, which was tired, grout missing on floor tiles, and being a wetroom, this means the tiles are lifting off the floor, and the wooden bathroom door and door frame mouldy and rotting. Uncomfortable Small Single Bed in Twin rooms (e.g. Celtic Manor or Belfry offer oversized single or double beds). Bar undermanned (possible staffing issues?) so often had to wait to be served. Staff were polite and friendly, however, a couple had mentioned they didn’t enjoy working at St Mellion and were looking for (or had obtained) alternative employment - which to me, reflects the poor standard of St Mellion and the Management team. Pool and Sauna was open, but steam room, hot tub and spa were closed (defective???). Breakfast was average to poor (cheap quality sausages and bacon), lots of flies around the cereal, pastries and croissants area (no obvious blue zappy bug lights). Evening meals were to a good (bot great) standard but the menu was basic with 4 choices of starter/main/desert, but only 1 of these which was suitable for Vegetarians (not that I am, i’m just merely sharing my observation). Appreciate that Cornwall is a pain to get to (4-5hrs from London) but with so many alternate venues in the UK, there was nothing ‘special’ to warrant a return to the resort.
James
✓24 Aug 2021
Rims was a little tired and would have benefited from a redecorate / refurb. All the staff were professional, friendly and very efficient. Bar was light, bright and welcoming Food I. The restaurant was very good, breakfast was a bit “confused” - mainly due to layout and 2 or 3 big groups at once.
Anthony
✓23 Aug 2021
On arrival, after a 5 hour drive, we were informed that the restaurant was fully booked so we could not have breakfast, we asked to have coffee at the bar whilst waiting for out tee time and were told we couldn't do this either, rather odd. We stayed in two lodges, which were sufficient for our needs, but very very dated. This hotel as a whole needs a few quid spent on it to bring it up to the 4* it claims to be. Staff very friendly, but not enough of them.

✓28 Jul 2021
Very disappointed. Still waiting to hear the outcome of our complaints. Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna - all out of action! One of the main reasons we stayed here. Weren’t allowed to eat on site - another reason we booked to stay here. Understaffed all three days so the queues at the bar/lunch cafe were massive and the service was cold and miserable The lady on reception on our first day was abrupt and rude. Such a shame because it was a key part of our trip. The rooms were also damp and full of insects

✓24 Jul 2021
Very disappointing!! We were informed on checking in that the hotel would not be serving dinner during our stay - even although we had paid for a golf, B&B and dinner package. We were handed a list of local restaurants and taxi numbers and had to sort things out ourselves!! As this situation had been ongoing for a few weeks YGT should have contacted us to inform us.
Steven
✓22 Jul 2021
The hotel and staff were very good. However there is a disappointment in that this was a golf, DINNER, bed and breakfast deal and upon checking in at 7pm after a hot round of golf, I was told that there was dinner and someone from Your Golf Travel should have already informed me. So at present, I've paid for dinner and not had any, and had to fork out extra expense for dinner in the evening and the public transport to get to it, and thus far no one from YGT has replied to my email or tweet.

Well where do I start 🤷🏻♂️ Not enough staff apparently so both evening meals we were loaded into a 16 seater bus & taken to local pub 10 minutes away. Service there was good. ST Mellion offered us £100 per table, anything over that we had to pay ourselves. Service at ST Mellion was very poor. Waited for 45 min for a got or cold drink day one, day two was a bit better. One group decided enough was enough & decided to go to local cafe. Bar staff on the evening had no idea, painfully slow. Pre booked electric trollies & received email confirming this, got there & no trollies booked for us. So our guys had to have a push trollies or buggy. Both golf courses however are just fantastic no complaints there. Courses 9/10 Service 2/10 Staff in isolation is not what anyone wants to hear. It just took the shine of a great trip. Don’t like to complain but just saying it how it was. Many others felt the same. 🤷🏻♂️

We returned to St Mellion after previous tour 4 yrs ago. The golf and pro shop staff were very obliging and helpful. The courses were both in pretty good condition and as tough as ever! The actual hotel unfortunately was in our opinion below par and not a 4 star establishment. Uncomfortable beds that make premier Inns positively ultra deluxe. A la crate restaurant with shortages of wine on both nights and a disappointing menu taboot. We discussed with the management and a price adjustment was agreed. We will not be placing review on trip advisor as that is not our style. Like so many of my school reports read, Tries hard but so much potential left wanting Mr Stewart Barnett

It's well sign posted, so easy to find, the rooms are very clean and extremely comfortable, the staff at the venue are very friendly and helpful and the golf courses themselves are very well maintained and a good challenge to all levels of golfer. I would recommend buggies though as it is a very hilly course.
Food and drink is of a very good standard and at a reasonable price too.
Yourgolftravel sorted out the weekend for us and did a great
job. We will be back. 10/10

We recently returned from our second visit to the St Mellion resort. This complex is a great place to visit whether you play golf or not, as there is plenty to do and see. The Kernow course is a lovely parkland course set in rolling countryside with great views. The quality of the fairways and greens is excellent and the course marshals ensure that the pace of play is never too slow.
The Hotel is of a very high standard too, and prices are very reasonable compared to other resorts that I have stayed in. The service was excellent with friendly and speedy members of staff who never kept you waiting for food or drinks. The quality of food and variety meant that there was a choice for everyone, including veggie options. Unlike a few other resorts that we have visited there was not a separate menu for guests visiting on a golf holiday and very few supplements to pay.
I would certainly recommend a golf break at St Mellion and
will be going back for a third visit hopefully later in the year. 10/10

I organised for 2 societies to go to St Mellion (32 people altogether) to play against each other on both the Kernow and Nicklaus courses. Overall the courses were in good condition although the tees on the Nicklaus were looking a bit tired.
The rooms were good and the food was good too and I didn't have any complaints from the lads. Unfortunately the cost of drinks in the bar was a bit steep, but after a few tend not to worry about it!
Members of staff in hotel and pro shop were friendly and helpful and all things considered, it's an ideal place for a weekend golf break.
Thanks to Your Golf Travel who managed to quickly get it all
booked up. Overall everything ran smoothly and would recommend you to mates.

I would like to thank everyone at yourgolftravel.com for helping me organize our trip to St Mellion.
The Hotel was stunning and all the staff were very helpful indeed. The pro in the golf shop even gave us a tour of the place and gave us good advice on how you tackle the golf courses.
All twelve of us thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would love to return back one day to take on the Nicklaus course once more.
We would certainly recommend St Mellion to
other golfers and would do so for all different size groups & societies.

Julie and I really enjoyed our stay at St Mellion, where all the staff in the hotel and golf course were helpful and very friendly. The food was excellent too, with plenty of choice from the menu. The room was clean and comfortable and the leisure facilities were excellent.
The golf courses were also in excellent condition, especially the greens. The Nicklaus Course is superb and some of the holes are truly stunning. It is a stern test of golf and I would play it totally differently when I go back. It is more of plotting your way round type of course and at times frustrated me, but that was from not knowing the course. It is a tough walk, but I did not see the benefit of a buggy as they have to stick to the cart paths on the Nicklaus course.
We were lucky to have fantastic weather but I would love to
go back as the whole experience was superb.

Stunning setting and a real challenge, narrow throughout but very rewarding when you got it right. Half way house was very disappointing was a small trailer on a patch of grass, and toilets at halfway round were also disappointing and resembled a village toilet block from the 80s.

Excellent but difficult course in beautiful surroundings and in really excellent condition. Its a hard and long walk with a trolley although we would have used buggies if they were allowed on the course. This in turn would have speeded up the round enormously. Nevertheless a hugely enjoyable round.

Perhaps the first time I have played this course on a really beautiful day and perhaps this colours my opinion but it really was idyllic, the signage is clear and the buggies carefully speed controlled through tricky parts of the course. The greens were very true but wish people would repair pitch marks! It’s a long and difficult championship course but thoroughly enjoyable on the day - hire a buggy unless you are fit and not over 70!!

We had read many reviews of this course prior to arriving so we were expecting a very difficult course, however the reviews dont do the course justice, to call it brutal is an understatement, only one criticism was some of the bunkers were like rock and made it impossible to get out of.

I have played the Nicklaus course many times over the years. On this occasion with the weather we have had over the past 4 months, I was expecting it to be very wet. On the contrary, apart from it being soft in a few places it was in wonderful condition and the greens were exceptional and quick. It is however a very difficult course for wayward strikers of the ball. Because the buggies have to stay on paths and some are quite elevated, I decided to walk the course and was particularly tired at the end of 18 holes and went back to a buggy for the second round. It is definitely worth a visit.

Wow, what a stunning golf course. Unfortunately we went on a day which was particularly busy and we were only a 2 ball.b3hind numerous 4 balls(+5 hours to go round) That said the weather was great and the scenery incredible. I walked this course in the 90's when the b and h masters was here. To play it myself was simply incredible. A tough and tight golf course, best to stay on the pristine fairways if possible and try and hit the postage stamp size greens which were a delight to putt on, receptive to a shot in and not a bobble in site. Fantastic, can't wait to go back again in the near future, fingers crossed🤞

We played on a wet day, after days of rain but the course was in excellent condition. The fairways had a lot of divots, reflecting the softness of the ground and the fact that most of the players are visitors. The course is testing but fair. ✓18 Jun 2023
The Nicklaus is a stunning golf course, one of the prettiest you will ever play. The course was in tremendous condition and the greens were immaculate. Play was a bit slow but I think that is due to having to stick to the cart paths in buggies and walking to your ball from a distance with multiple clubs in your hand. The buggies do have gps but you have to leave them some distance away from your ball especially if your playing partner is in a different spot to you. Would recommend getting a trolley over a buggy. Great course non the less though.

If it’s your first time then there are a few holes where you wonder what and where to hit. That said, the others it’s all in front of you. Quick greens and some outstanding par 3’s. First two holes give you a chance of birdie and then it starts to bite back. Overall, a good challenge. Course was very slow (5.5 hours) and on a very hot day it was a wee bit disappointing that there was no drinks buggy as we all ran out of water. Halfway hut is vending machines that had no water in them.

My real concern here is that I paid an awful lot of money for this golf trip (it turns out that I actually paid more for a 3 night trip to St Mellion than any member pays for their annual membership) and my friend and I were given the very first tee time after a ladies competition. As i'm spending that much money, it would be nice to be looked after, given a better time where it wouldn't take over 5 hours to play a round of golf.

One of the most athletically pleasing course I've ever played and I'm up over 150 now, superb use of the streams, hills, and what vision in designing this course. It is no way an easy course and although I was an average of 9 shots worse than my 7 handicap I really loved the course, it's very tight, every hole has its own challenge and with no 2 feeling samey in any way, despite the wet weather the course held up well, greens were still running well despite the usage. Wish it was closer as it would really improve my game, plus help me keep the ball in play. The rough is penal, lots of streams and rises.... You won't regret playing here...take some balls, although I only lost 1 in 2 rounds but had taken 30! Definitely needs a better range with targets and flags etc...not just 1 of each!

Wow! Phenomenal course but very hard and unforgiving on the front 9. Absolutely beautiful scenery and holes. Buggies have to stick to paths which is an issue when you have to walk to try and find your ball. I play roughly off 18 and I found it really tough. I would recommend the Kernow if you’re around my handicap. Great experience though.

✓13 Sep 2021
Great course. Front 9 feels really tight with little room for error. Things get a bit more forgiving on the back 9 and it showed in my scores… Greens were fantastic, the ball runs true every time and makes me realise how poor the greens are on the courses I play week in week out. Got a round of applause for my shot into the 18th green which flew the lake, pitched next to the pin and stopped… which was nice!
Chris
✓13 Sep 2021
Great course, it can be tricky if you’re not on your game but if you are it’s very enjoyable. Lovely true greens. My only irritation was when one of the marshals asked to speak to the organiser, he approached me flanked by two colleagues as if about to solemnly inform me of a death in the family. Instead, the issue at hand was a single pocket on the side of the shorts of one of our 16 players. Bit ott frankly, golf desperately needs to let little things like this go - which he did in this instance to be fair but I could have done without the lecture, I’m not responsible for what my group wears.

A really good golf course. Very challenging. Clearly, this is where all the money at St Mellion is spent… Again, nowhere to buy a halfway beer, except in the clubhouse bar… This course is definitely worth playing, but the rest of the resort lacks the quality and panache to justify the spend and 5 hour journey… Pleased to have ticked it off my list.

Fairly simple course. I’m a 24hcp and my home course is quite challenging. I shot 15over (par 70 I shot gross 85). Back 9 very short, almost as if it was squeezed in, to complete 18 holes… Nowhere to buy a halfway beer, except in the club house, where there are huge queues at the bar.

Very very hard course if you dont hit straight. The conditions were superb. The 5th hole is truly incredible. Superb golf venue. Would definitely recommend but maybe a bit too far to return for a 2nd time.

Got rained off after 7 holes but was fantastic for the 7 holes. We tried to play the back 9 the following morning but the course was shut due to bad weather which was a shame.

A god test of your golf. Tight drives and long in places what you would expect from a championship course

as you can imagine very hard course. some long walks from greens to tees. I'm 61 and found it a hard and long course..but you have to give it a go. it's a brilliant course to play

This is a wonderful course to play. Its the third time of playing this one and never learn to stick to a game plan. You will get punished for wayward tee shots but the experience on playing such a course will leave you wanting to play it again.

I booked this course for the 2nd day of my trip but upon arrival was told I was playing this the first day after I reserved this tee time and booking 6 weeks ago... so I was told I was playing the Nicolas the first day at 11:52 and the kernow the 2nd day at 12:52 When I actually booked the kernow the first day at 11:30 and the Nicolas the 2nd day at 12:30... The hotel staff and accommodation was fine no problems at all. But the service I received in the pro shop was beyond what I imagined and has left a bad taste in my mouth for returning to what is a great course and hotel but very poor staff in the pro shop...

I had a very unpleasant experience with this, the staff in the pro shop were very unwelcoming and very rude, bad attitude and not what I expected for a place like this.

Very good course with some great holes - first 6 were a real challenge in the wind and rain and 18 was great with some other good holes thrown in.

✓28 Sep 2020
Good for what it was - a second track at a resort. Back nine is a bit silly with 4 drivable par 4s including one that was only 220 yards. Is that really a par 4? I guess they want the overall par to be 70 and not 68 or 69!

Excellent time on course challenging but very playable. Lovely to have toilet facilities on course. Very friendly starters

First day was frustrating due to badly allocated tee times behind a roll up Academy . As a two ball should have been informed and given the choice to go out before . However 2nd round on third day was fine

What a course - a ‘must’ play for serious golfers. Course testing but as a lady golfer never felt out of my depth, finished with a par on 18th - smile still on my face! Cannot wait to play in warmer weather- fabulous two days of golf!

Outstanding course, the views were terrific and the fairways are narrow, plenty of water to contend with. Play within yourself and you will score I was told- never a truer word spoken. Only criticism I have is there are no water taps on the way round and the 1/2 way house is a vending machine. It should be staffed as it's a testing course physically too.

Excellent course, we played it twice sandwiched by the Nicklaus course. The Kenrow is a fantastic playable course and you can score well being conservative off the tee.

A relief from the Nicklaus but still an enjoyable experience. Having taken over the booking from Nigel, the offers were somewhat confusing. We had 50% off buggies which we did not use, and free range balls, not always available on the range. Under the impression there was money towards drinks. Ken Ampleford kdample83@gmail.com

It was slow going following a number of 4 balls which didn’t help get any rhythm. Course was great considering the wet weather. Brakes on the buggy were a challenge on some of the very steep gradients

The Nicklaus calls for long straight hitting on every shot. I still feel that the yellow tees on the 5th hole should be at the very front of the tee box as it is an intimidating long carry over water.

The condition of the Kernow has improved in the last 2 years and all of us enjoyed the scenery and the challenge. Par 3s are really good and testing.

My wife and I played the Nicklaus Course once. The course is very pretty and picturesque with many changes in elevations and water on a number of holes. The fairways are quite narrow and the rough is fairly long requiring a very straight tee shot to be in with a chance of a par. This made it very challenging and a never to be forgotten experience. We plan to try again next year.

My wife and I played the Kernow Course twice. The course is undulating with water on a few holes, fairways are reasonably wide and the rough not too long, so made it an enjoyable experience that was not too challenging.

Fantastic golf course, stunning views, we walked which is ok but between greens and the next Tee area is very hilly.
Philip

Great golf course, not to long lots of blind Tee shots, Greens were fantastic.

The fairways are tight and the greens are small! Accuracy is the key and avoid the bunkers at all costs! Again, can't wait to go back and improve the score.
Dawn
✓15 May 2019
The fairways are wide and the greens are huge, but don't be fooled - this is a challenge. The rough is punishing and the fairways slope. The greens are fast and undulating with interesting pin positions. Want to go back to improve my score.

Wow, what a stunning course. One of the best I have ever played. Being an avid follower of Mark Crossfield and 'The Muppets' I had been looking forward to playing it for ages. Really enjoyed playing the course despite playing during 'Storm Gareth' which made it even more challenging. Loved it. We will definitely be back.

A great course with a good variety of holes. The first time we played there were no flags in the holes on some of the greens which we understand from the Windy conditions but it would have good to have been told as we did not know where we were going some of the time. Just a printed course planner would have been helpful. We followed behind a competition on the Saturday which was frustratingly slow.
