Set within 500 acres of Constable Country in the heart of East Anglia, Stoke by Nayland has been quietly building a reputation as one of England's finest parkland golf destinations since opening in 1972. The resort's two championship courses sit close to the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and regularly host PGA EuroPro Tour events, while the 2006 PGA Seniors' Championship put the venue firmly on the national stage.

Located just 20 minutes north of Colchester and less than an hour from London Stansted Airport, the resort sits in pure English countryside, surrounded by lakes and woodland that frame both courses. The setting is peaceful, the golf is serious, and the facilities, particularly the Peake Spa, make this a proper country escape rather than just a quick golf break.

The Lakes Restaurant holds two AA Rosettes and serves modern British cuisine with views across the water and the greens beyond, while the Peake Bistro covers the casual side if you're still in golf shoes and want something quicker. The 24-hour Lounge Bar is handy for a post-round drink.

Who is this for?
Golfers looking for a quality parkland break within easy reach of London, the South East and East Anglia. The two courses offer variety and challenge, the hotel is comfortable and well-equipped, and the spa facilities make it ideal for couples or groups who want more than just golf. It's also a strong choice for societies, with two courses on-site and plenty of space to spread out.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy strategic, tree-lined parkland golf and want a proper country-house setting without the stuffiness. The combination of two championship courses, excellent dining and one of the region's best spas makes it particularly appealing for longer breaks or mixed groups where not everyone is obsessed with golf.

Golf Courses at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa

Gainsborough Course

The par-71 Gainsborough Course measures over 7000 yards from the championship markers, and the tremendous rolling countryside is home to a truly spectacular layout, which is designed around the four expansive lakes that can wreak havoc with your scorecard.

It is essential to drive the ball well around the Gainsborough, as being out of position off the tee will make scoring exceptionally difficult. The highlight is the awe-inspiring 10th, where golfers must play their drive and approach shot over the same lake.

Blue 4,012 yards SSS 64.2

Constable Course

The Constable Course measuring at just over 6,400 yards and a par of 72 is similarly stunning, but is arguably tighter off the tee, owing to the mature woodland that skirts many fairways. There are several water hazards to be negotiated, and like the Gainsborough, retaining your concentration to the last is important; the closing hole is an exacting par-4, requiring a good drive over a large lake before you attack the plateau green.

Stoke by Nayland's superb golf complex also offers first-class tuition, while the overall package makes it an educated choice for your society or corporate golf outing and is now the site for one of Lee Westwood golf schools'.

Take your inspiration from the renowned Constable and Gainsborough, after whom the courses are named, and use all your artistic creativity to negotiate the great variety of holes at Stoke by Nayland.

Accommodation at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa

The hotel sits at the heart of the estate, surrounded by the same lakes and woodland that define the golf courses. Many of the rooms look out over water or fairways, and the setting is as peaceful as you'll find in this part of England.

Guest rooms are spacious and well-appointed, with direct-dial telephone, satellite television and internet connection as standard. The resort has been undergoing a renovation and extension programme, taking the hotel to 78 bedrooms once complete, and lifting the accommodation to a standard that matches the quality of the golf.

Room types range from Classic doubles through to Superior and Executive options, with the latter offering more space and enhanced views across the estate. All rooms are decorated in a contemporary country-house style, comfortable without being fussy, and designed with golfers in mind: plenty of space for kit and a proper desk if you need to catch up on work between rounds.

The bathrooms are modern and well-fitted, with good showers and enough counter space that you're not fighting for room if you're sharing. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are quiet, and if you're staying in one of the lake-view or fairway-view rooms, the morning outlook is worth the upgrade. It's the sort of place where you can settle in for a few nights without feeling like you're roughing it, but it's not so formal that you can't relax after a round.

If you're travelling as a group or society, the hotel can accommodate larger parties, and there's enough space in the public areas that you won't feel like you're tripping over other guests. The staff are helpful without being overbearing, and they're used to dealing with golfers, so early breakfasts and late check-ins are usually manageable if you ask in advance.

The Lakes Restaurant is the main dining room, holding two AA Rosettes for modern British cooking that makes good use of local and seasonal ingredients. The menu changes regularly, but expect well-executed dishes with a focus on flavour rather than fuss. In warmer months, the south-facing terrace overlooking the lake and course is hard to beat for a pre-dinner drink. For something more casual, the Peake Bistro serves lighter bites, sandwiches and pub-style mains throughout the day, ideal if you're coming off the course and want something quick before heading to the spa or settling in for the evening. The Lounge Bar is open 24 hours, with a full drinks list and a relaxed atmosphere that suits post-round debriefs.

The Peake Spa is a real highlight of any stay and one of East Anglia's premier wellness centres. Eleven treatment rooms offer everything from aromatherapy and reflexology to Indian head massage, manicures, pedicures, St. Tropez tanning and Rasoul mud therapy, an ancient Egyptian exfoliation treatment that's worth trying if you're after something different.

The gym is fitted with Technogym Excite equipment for serious cardiovascular work, and there's a full schedule of classes including spinning, Tai Bo, Pilates, karate and dance. The leisure club includes a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, spa pool, solarium and squash courts, making this a proper retreat for anyone who wants to balance golf with genuine relaxation.

The resort is located in the village of Leavenheath, straddling the Essex-Suffolk border. From London Stansted Airport, it's less than an hour by car. The address is Keepers Lane, Leavenheath, Colchester, Essex, CO6 4PZ.

Hotel bars were nice, all staff were friendly and helpful. Hotel rooms are a bit tired in particular the bathroom. You can’t go in the pool after 10am or before 6pm without additional charges.

Highly recommended - will be back. Large, well appointed, comfortable rooms. Shower was great after a hot day on the course. Well equipped gym, good sized pool and spa facilities great to relax in before and after rounds of golf. Lots of choices for food and drink. Sports bar - served good pub grub and "cordon bleu" quality in the Lava Restaurant for dinner. Buffet breakfast was all a hungry golfer could wish for to set themselves up for a long, hot day on the course. Most memorable element of the stay was the unfailing hospitality shown by the hotel's staff. From the reception, through the bars, in the Spa and and the dining rooms - all at the highest standard. A particular shout out for Jack in the Sports bar. 5 stars all round.

Again a well designed course but suffered the same issues as the Constable ie good tees and greens but the fairways were dried out and a strong case for an upgrade on the irrigation. We also had to abandon the course at the 13th due to extremely slow play 2 hrs 45 min for 9 holes and getting slower. Having reported this at the turn nothing was done only to find out that they didn’t have any staff apparently……staffing didn’t appear to be a problem. So, I’m afraid this took the shine off the experience and hence the review.

The course was well designed and had some interesting holes using the contours of the landscape well. The tees and greens were in good condition but the fairways were very dried out. They were clearly doing their best to move mobile irrigation around it struggling to have an impact. The result was that some good shots being punished unduly. Yes, local knowledge and all that, but this could be improved.
