West Virginia is home to The Greenbrier, an established venue on the PGA Tour and host of the first Ryder Cup in 1979 under its new format of Europe versus the USA.
Located within the historic mountains, this historic landmark venue is a world class resort that has welcomed people for over two hundred years. A 10,000 acre luxury retreat, people come from all over to indulge themselves in the high quality food, the relaxing pastimes, the natural mineral springs and of course the top level golf.
The oldest of courses at Greenbrier, the Old White TPC had the first golfers tread these famous fairways in 1914 and was name after the original White Hotel that graced the grounds in the late 1800's into the early 1900s. Designed by Charles Blair Macdonald with many holes resembling many famous links holes at St Andrews, Prestwick and North Berwick, it has hosted the Greenbrier Class PGA Tour event since 2010 and a regular favourite with all tour professionals. The signature 18th hole Par 3 has witnessed some great victories and with the course measuring 7,287 yards in total, it is one of the toughest Par 70's around.
An original Seth Raynor design, this course was re-modelled by Jack Nicklaus in 1977 and is the only resort course to host both the Ryder Cup (1979) and the Solheim Cup (1994).
It requires a lot of course management with solid iron play and a steady putter and at 6,675 yards and Par 72, it can be possible to play to your handicap if you give this track the respect it deserves.
Described as one of the most enjoyable courses at Greenbrier, the Meadows course has some of the most scenic holes, so be sure to take your camera. It has been upgraded to make it a more sturdier test of your golfing skills and still a challenging length at 6,660 yards Par 70. With the finishing hole sharing a green with the Old White, it is an annual host to many regional and state championships.
There are 710 rooms with 33 suites and to give you an idea of the size of the resort, there are 10 lobbies with over 40 meeting rooms. For your dining experience, there are over 15 bars and restaurants ranging from fine dining at "In-Fusion" to the relaxed feel of "Sam Sneads", everyone and every need, is catered for.
The Spa is very well known and has attracted people for years to bathe in the white sulpher spring water, along with a variety of treatments on offer. There are countless other activities both indoors with ten pin bowling, a casino and history tours, to outdoor fun with carriage rides, tennis and white water rafting. Greenbrier is stay and play that can last for days if not weeks with something different every day.
