Perched on the stunning southern coast of Portugal, Vale do Lobo is one of Europe's most complete golf resort set-ups. The two championship layouts, the Royal and the Ocean, each bring something different to the table and both rank among Portugal's finest tests. While the Royal edges it as the headline course, it's the contrast between the two that makes Vale do Lobo such a compelling destination for a golf break.

For an Algarve golf break, it's hard to beat for convenience. You're in the heart of the Algarve, 25 minutes from Faro Airport, with easy access to local beaches and the marina town of Vilamoura nearby. The accommodation here is top-drawer, designed for golfers who want a bit more than the standard hotel room, and the resort backs that up with 15 restaurants and The Royal Spa to round out your stay.

Who is this for?
Vale do Lobo suits golfers looking for a luxury self-catering base with two contrasting championship courses on the doorstep. It works well for couples, groups and families who want quality golf combined with beach access, excellent dining and spa facilities. The resort appeals to mid-to-low handicappers who'll get the most from the Royal's challenge, but the Ocean offers a more forgiving option for higher handicappers or those wanting variety across multiple rounds.

Who is it best for?
This is ideal for golfers seeking an upmarket, all-encompassing Algarve experience where golf, dining, relaxation and the beach are all within the resort. It's particularly suited to groups or societies who value space, privacy and self-catering flexibility without sacrificing luxury, and to anyone building a multi-course Algarve itinerary who wants a premium base in the region's centre.

Golf Courses at Vale Do Lobo Golf Resort

Royal Golf Course

Vale do Lobo's Royal Course boasts some spectacular holes, not least of which is the cliff-top 16th hole which has effectively become the face of golf in the Algarve, making it a must play when visiting the Vilamoura region.

Although it is a par-3, the green is set some 238 yards away on the opposite side of a series of plunging cliffs and standing on the tee facing the stunning sandstone cliffs, with a gleaming white sandy beach and the Atlantic Ocean to your left is undoubtedly one of the most exhilarating experiences in world golf.

The legendary Sir Henry Cotton's design has been revised by Rocky Roquemore in recent years, and continues to delight visitors year after year thanks to its amazing surroundings and the sweeping elevation changes that define the layout and provide much of the challenge, in addition to of course, the tight fairways that are bordered by mature umbrella pines that are so indicative of golf courses in the Algarve.

Signature Hole   – No. 16: Par 3, 234 yards (White Tees)

There is little question that the 16th on the Royal Course at Vale do Lobo is the course’s signature hole and it is arguably the signature golfing experience one can enjoy in the whole of the Algarve. This is a brute of a par 3 which can be played one of two ways. Either take on the forced carry over the cliffs to the large green or, if you don’t have the required firepower, take the long way around, utilising the small patch of fairway to the right. This might be the more sensible option for many but few will be able to resist having a crack at the green on such an iconic hole.

The Vale do Lobo Royal Course is ranked as one of the best golf courses in Portugal

Did you know? The only two ‘hole in ones’ on par 4’s on the Royal Course were both achieved in 2000: by Mr Geoffrey Widdowson on the 376 yard 4th and by Mr Francesco Vazzana on the 442 yard 17th.

Ocean Golf Course

The Ocean Course differs greatly to its neighbour; while the cliff-top Royal demands accuracy above all else, the Ocean allows golfers to use their creativity to great effect. Many of the holes run alongside a nature reserve, before the course winds down to the shoreline, where you can enjoy unparalleled views up and down the coast. The Ocean is a combination of two nine hole loops designed by Sir Henry Cotton & Rocky Roquemore who added the newer nine in 2003, and is a gem of a course that will satisfy even the most demanding golfer.

Perhaps seen as the “second” course at Vale do Lobo, the Ocean might not get the praise it deserves as it’s an excellent course in its own right, and a handful of the holes take you as close to the sea as you’re going to get in the Algarve. These holes, which come towards and middle of the round and into the back nine, are the truly memorable holes on the course and the 15th in particular is a stunner, almost rivalling the famous par 3 16th on the Royal for wow factor.

Previously hosted: The Algarve Golf Open (1971), Portuguese Golf Open (1976, 2002, 2003), Open Foursomes Golf tournament (Since 1983), Portuguese Golf Ladies’ Open (1985, 1987).

Did you know? Football Manager Louis Van Gaal once said of the Ocean Course: ‘I love playing the Ocean Golf Course as I always seem to play better on there! The views are also outstanding and you can feel the sea air wafting around you as you take in the scenery and enjoy the greens.’

Facilties

Vale Do Lobo also provides a golf academy, with two distinct areas. There is a netted area for the instruction of beginner golfers, which is also used as a warm up area.  A short game practice area with bunkers is also available. This can be used by golfers to warm up before a game and as an instruction area used by the expert Vale Do Lobo Golf Professionals.

At the Clubhouse

Vale Do Lobo’s clubhouse is home to Spike’s Restaurant & Bar. The terrace overlooks a pretty sculpture garden, making it an environment which both golfers and non-golfers can enjoy from breakfast through to late at night. Spike’s offers a range of snacks and club sandwiches as well as some traditional Portuguese dishes.

Other Information

The Vale do Lobo Golf Club is home to a fully equipped Fitness centre is also on site, with a physiotherapist specialising in golf injuries. Club, buggy and trolley rental and changing facilities are also available.

Vale Do Lobos dress code requires golfers to wear golf shoes with soft spikes as well as collared shirts and golf trousers or tailored shorts.

Accommodation at Vale Do Lobo Golf Resort

Vale do Lobo has been delivering luxury golf holidays in Portugal since 1962, and it remains one of the Algarve's most established resort addresses. Your stay is based in private residences ranging from well-appointed apartments through to standalone villas, all fully equipped for self-catering and serviced once a week by a personal maid (twice weekly if you opt for Deluxe).

Accommodation is split across standard, superior and deluxe categories. All units are spacious and comfortable, but the upgraded options take things up a level with designer furnishings and high-end finishes that match the resort's reputation. You're not staying in a hotel corridor here, you've got proper living space, kitchens that work and the kind of privacy that makes longer stays feel less like a holiday and more like a very well-located second home.

The residences are spread across the resort but all within easy reach of the first tee, the Praça dining and shopping area, and the beach. Most units come with private terraces or balconies, and the deluxe options often feature pools and garden access. If you're travelling as a larger group or society, the villa setup works particularly well, you get communal spaces for post-round debriefs without being on top of each other, and everyone has their own room rather than the usual twin-share hotel grind.

Housekeeping is included as standard, which takes the edge off self-catering if you're here for a week or more. Check-in is straightforward, and while there's no central hotel reception in the traditional sense, the resort team are easy to reach if you need anything sorted. The setup is built around convenience and space rather than hotel-style service, and that suits golfers who want flexibility over their schedule, meals and downtime without sacrificing quality or location.

It's an easy resort to navigate. Golf, dining, the spa and the beach are all close by, and the layout works equally well whether you're here as a couple, a four-ball or a larger group with families in tow. It's designed for golfers who want a bit of extra luxury without the stuffiness that sometimes comes with it.

Vale do Lobo has 15 restaurants spread across the resort, most clustered around the beachside Praça area. The range covers everything from casual poolside plates to more formal evening dining, with menus leaning on international cuisine and fresh local ingredients. You'll find plenty of choice whether you're after a quick lunch between rounds or a proper sit-down meal after a day on the Royal.

The Royal Spa is the place to go when your back's had enough of 36 holes in a day. It's a proper spa, not just a treatment room tacked onto a gym, with everything from herbal remedies and Oriental therapies through to vitamin-enriched treatments and aesthetic options. The setting overlooks the golf courses, and the whole experience is built around proper relaxation rather than a quick massage and out the door.

The fitness centre sits alongside the spa and comes equipped with the latest Technogym kit plus a full range of free weights. If you're the type who can't skip a session even on holiday, it's all here.

The Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy is one of Portugal's largest, with 8 hard courts, 4 clay and 6 padel courts, plus a swimming pool, fitness gym and café. If you're travelling with non-golfers or fancy mixing things up between rounds, there's plenty to keep everyone occupied.

Vale do Lobo sits directly on the Algarve's golden coastline with immediate beach access. Faro International Airport is a straightforward 20-minute drive, making arrivals and departures as painless as they get for a European golf break.

We had a brilliant experience staying at the Vale do Lobo resort apartments. On arrival around 1pm we were told our room would be ready by 5pm, but to our delight we received a text at 3:30pm letting us know we could check in early. The apartment was spotless and very well presented, with thoughtful touches such as tea, coffee, bread, and jam provided on arrival. The facilities were excellent — strong WiFi, a safe for valuables, and even an alarm for added peace of mind. The shuttle service around the resort was outstanding: extremely quick, reliable, and very convenient. A special mention to the reception staff, who were friendly, professional, and couldn’t do enough to help us. Overall, a fantastic stay and we will definitely return.

I booked a standard 2 bedroom apartment with twin beds in each bedroom. We ended up being given a 2 bed apartment with a twin and double room ! on the first night one of the party had to sleep on a sofa and then they put a camp bed in with the double which was not great and very uncomfortable !! overall the complex is nice just a shame that the basics affected the overall enjoyment
