We-Ko-Pa Resort

10.0
Excellent See all 1 review

Tucked into the Sonoran Desert just outside Scottsdale, We-Ko-Pa Resort is built for golfers who want a proper desert break, not a busy hotel corridor with a course bolted on. You've got two award-winning layouts on site, the Scott Miller-designed Cholla Course and the Saguaro Course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, both framed by saguaro cactus, crisp elevation changes and those wide-open Arizona horizons that make club selection feel like half the battle.

The resort sits on Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation land, which means you're playing in a setting that feels refreshingly undeveloped, so you get big desert views without the usual resort sprawl. Despite that, you're still only a short drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor, so it works well for a long weekend or as the anchor stay on a wider Scottsdale itinerary that might include TPC Scottsdale, Troon North or Grayhawk.

Off the course, you'll find straightforward resort comforts, solid dining with a Southwestern focus and easy access to Scottsdale if you want to mix in a few of the big names. Right, I'll be honest, with 36 holes on the doorstep, most groups won't feel the need to roam too far. If you like your desert golf with a bit of breathing space, this is the sort of place that makes you slow down, take a photo and then promptly try to flight a 7-iron under a cactus-shaped horizon.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want a dedicated desert golf base with two highly rated courses on site, plus the option to add Scottsdale's headline tracks. Ideal for groups, couples or solo travellers who want quality golf in a quieter, more natural setting than the busier Scottsdale resort corridor.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who appreciate strategic, walkable desert golf and want to play two contrasting courses from respected architects. Also suits anyone seeking a winter-sun golf break with authentic Southwestern character and easy access to Phoenix-area attractions.

Accommodation at We-Ko-Pa Resort

Rooms and suites at We-Ko-Pa are spacious, modern and designed to make the most of the desert setting. You'll find large windows framing views across the Sonoran landscape, comfortable king or double-queen beds and all the practical stuff done well after a day in the sun. That means Wi-Fi, cable TV with HBO and ESPN, air conditioning and a proper bathroom set-up for getting cleaned up before dinner. If you're travelling as a foursome, suites are worth a look for the extra living space, and they work particularly well for longer stays when you want somewhere to spread out between rounds.

The resort's layout is compact and easy to navigate, with the hotel, clubhouse and dining all within a short walk. There's an outdoor heated pool and whirlpool for post-round recovery, which gets plenty of use in the winter months when the desert evenings can be surprisingly cool. The atmosphere throughout is relaxed and unpretentious, more focused on golf and the natural surroundings than resort-style formality. You won't find a spa or kids' club here, this is a golf resort in the truest sense, and that's exactly what most guests are looking for.

Dining centres on the Ahnala Mesquite Room, a restaurant that draws heavily on Native American culinary traditions and Southwestern ingredients. The menu features locally sourced meats, seasonal vegetables and bold, smoky flavours from the mesquite grill, all supported by a strong wine list with plenty of approachable bottles by the glass. It's the kind of place where you can settle in after 36 holes and enjoy a proper meal rather than the usual burger-and-a-beer routine. For lighter options, the Ahnala Lounge serves drinks and smaller plates in a more casual setting, while the Poolside Café covers daytime snacks, sandwiches and refreshments if you're spending time by the pool between rounds.

Practical details worth knowing: the resort can arrange early breakfast if you've got a dawn tee time, there's secure storage for clubs and the walk from your room to the first tee is genuinely short, which matters when you're playing 36 holes in a day. The practice facilities are solid, with a driving range, short-game area and putting green all within easy reach of the clubhouse, so you can get properly warmed up before your round.

Off-site, the Fort McDowell Casino is a short drive if you fancy an evening away from the course, and the resort can arrange access to local experiences like the Arizona Cowboy College or day trips into Scottsdale itself. But most guests are here for the golf, and We-Ko-Pa makes it easy to focus on that without distraction.

Always our favourite course in all respects. Watch out for rattlesnakes! And other types of snake. Saw 2 this year on cart path and around desert area.
